The doradillo protected area from its closest viewpoint to madryn (10k) punta Arco. Even Bañuls, 20km from the city, gave us a unique whale and calf watching show. It is recommended to go by bicycle to be able to take advantage of each of the viewpoints and take your time while taking care of the environment and health.

Wide beach from which you can see the whales right there.
Mostly between August and October, and around the time of high tide, whale watching is done; We went on a high tide day at 2 p.m., and between 2:45 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. we were able to see several female-whale pairs; So first of all, check the tides before traveling, and schedule this visit for the day that best suits the whale passage schedule. Take into account that the access route is under construction, and you have to make a detour to get there and the trip takes 45 min-1 hour.
Being on the beach, and seeing them just there is a strange sensation, they seem within reach of a dive; It combines perfectly with a mateada.

Great views. You keep taking pictures. It's just that you've got the whales there, so close, and they seem to be walking slowly to impress you. A wonder of nature. The road is dirt, lots of dirt! There are several descents to the beach. We went down on the last beach and we didn’t see them (just some and far away). But then we went, like, back, and about 5 km away, we went down to another beach and there they were... divine! Super super important: find out the tides, you only see them at high tide.

If you want to go whale watching here by bike, and tourist agencies tell you that the road is closed for bikes as well - don't believe them. Go to a bike rental and they will give you all directions, since the road is closed for cars and tours therefore, but with bikes it's accessible. To rent a bike I can recommend "Hi Patagónia Rental Cars & bikes" with great service and helpful tips.
PS: don't forget to check when it is high tide, the whales will be much closer

Wonderful place to see whales! Just make sure you are there during the season. Right now it's the first week of September, went here twice and saw dozens. Best is to look up when it's high tide (mostly in the mornings around 7:30am). Good thing is that you can then watch the sunrise and there's nobody else there. I liked it more than being packed on a boat full of tourists.

You can see whales from quite close, although what they say that they can see from 30 m away did not happen to us. But there were several copies. I recommend planning a visit for when the tide is high, +/- 2 hours from high tide. During our stay, September 2023, high tides occurred around 7:00 p.m., already quite late.
The road to get there has a stretch of gravel, in good condition. It is no problem.

The best beach to arrive by bike or E bike and do self whale watching all along the high tide for days, you can be a week going every day to the different places of the protected area to sped your day without people. 2023/4 will be no traffic as the route will be closed for traffic. Perfect for bikers and lonely places. Punta Arco is only 10km from town by the Bicisenda.

The day before we made the sighting from port pyramids and saw only a whale and its whale. In reports we were told that the next day we went to El Doradillo from 11 to 13 (Schedule of pleading, INFORM BEFORE GOING, since at that time they are close). We arrived at 11 o’clock and watched a spectacular parade of whales and whales just a few meters from us. A unique show, the best of the trip and worth more than paying the expensive sightseeing.

It is a short tour aprox 2 hours very near of Puerto Madryn .Only during a short period you can see whales from the shore with the babies. During hide tide the whales swim at a very short distance from the beach.

Last week of August and we saw many whales and very close. The truth is that the day was clear and sunny and even so, all the wind there makes you leave after a while. It's not that you sit down and drink mate, it's more about tolerating the weather to be able to see the whales. The road up there is in bad condition. There is absolutely nothing in terms of services or security. It was worth knowing him anyway

Hi! I'm a solo woman, going to Puerto Madryn for 3 days with the hopes of seeing whales, of course! Boat trips aren't my thing but I'm hoping to cycle along the coastline to stop at the beaches and view points.
1) My plan is to cycle (or E-cycle) to Playa Doradillo and Playa La Cantera, but I'm worried the roads might be too sandy. And, is it an easy trip to take? :)
2) Will it be easy to find a bike rental place?
Any other advice will be very appreciated :) Thank you so much!!

Hola!
