Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Incredible. One of the most beautiful cathedrals I've seen, a must see if you visit La Plata.

This is a huge edifice which shouts its history across a vast and tidy square. The interior has massive vaulted ceilings and you can’t help but feel his presence.
No entrance fee go in and spend as much time as you like.

The cathedral is nice and worth the visit. But the real treat is to climb up the tower stairs and enjoy a nice view. Try to go late in the afternoon so to glimpse at the sunset, a very nice setting indeed.

It’s as impressive as any of the big cathedrals in Europe La Plata is one hour train ride from Buenos Aires from Constitution Station (an outstanding english old train station) You will enjoy combining it with Natural Sciencies museum and the Le Corbusier House. You will spend a really good day away from BA.

I’m not a big church visitor but I couldn’t help but be impressed by this lovely calm cathedral in the middle of bustling La Plata. It’s as impressive as any of the big cathedrals in Europe without the massive crowds. Worth the 1 hour train ride from Buenos Aires (just $8AR every half hour from Constitution Station on a nice new air conditioned train). When combined with a visit to the Museo de La Plata and the Le Corbusier House it was a really good day away from BA.

La Plata's massive cathedral is an imposing sight, and we were lucky enough to see it on a beautiful, sunny spring day. Having a look inside is a good experience in itself, as you can really appreciate its dimensions. But the absolute highlight is the 60 peso (Oct 2017) ticket that gets you access to the underground museum and crypt of Dardo Rocha, and an elevator ride that takes you to both 42 and 63 metres above Plaza Moreno. The views of both the city and the other church towers are outstanding.

The museum has plenty of information about the Cathedral's design, construction and (eventual) completion. While only some of it is in Spanish, it's still pretty easy to get the main parts of the story.

This is a highly recommended attraction in a city that has plenty to offer. As a bonus, visiting the Cathedral will allow you to also spend some time wandering through the delightful Plaza Moreno.

I had the privilege of living in La Plata back in the fall of 1980 and again about a year later. I always cherished any chance to visit this building. Back then the cathedral was lacking the two main spires. From what I've read, they had to halt construction in the 1930s when it was discovered that the building was sinking and would not be able to hold the weight of the intended spires. I remember thinking back then how odd the building looked, unfinished, like a bull with its horns cut off. According to Wikipedia, it's the 58th largest church in the world.

Anyway, it's also the site of one of the most memorable moments of my young life. At the age of 19 I was invited by a priest to play the pipe organ in this cathedral. I still shed a tear when I think about it; it was such an honor for me. Ironically I am not Catholic. As a young Mormon missionary, all I knew how to play were Mormon hymns,,.so that's what I did. Archbishop Plaza (bishop at the time) later learned of this and I'm told the poor priest, a mere seminarian at the time, was severely disciplined for having allowed me access to the organ. I think Plaza might have thought I was trying to make a mockery of the place. Quite the contrary; I loved that building, its architecture, its beauty, its serenity. The Bishop asked to meet with me but some of the priests who were my friends advised against it so I didn't. They said he was a horrible man. Trials held years later over the "desaparecidos" of the dirty war and his involvement in that proved them right, I guess.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the cathedral. We visited the crypt, took the elevator to the viewing floor and marveled at the stained glass windows.
