Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a great time learning the first approach to tango. Very informal setting. Like in VERY informal. I definitly would not be eating there, but the dancefloor and the other people were very nice. And there was a nice combination of beginners and some who knew more, so it was actually possible to learn something. It made me want to learn more about the tango. Be prepared to change partners a lot.
The sound system collapsed, but by magic they fond a couple that played guitar and sang - and that was a wonderful experience. What a voice, and what a mood!

We went to La Catédral for a tango lesson and the social dancing afterwards. Someone else who reviewed the club said that it is very informal. This is a euphemism. It is old and grotty and kind of falling apart. It’s in an old church and the floors are crumbling. When you enter, you really do wonder if you’re in the right place. But with that said, it feels really authentic and local. The teachers are skilled and welcoming. It cost 1000 ARS for a lesson and the social dancing afterwards was free. They sell drinks at the bar. I agree that I wouldn’t eat the food.

Better than going to a fancy Tango show. You can go to La Catedral, take tango classes for 100 pesos (1h30 of class) and if you go on a Friday evening, you can see the true tango lovers dancing just for the sake of it. The food at the place is all veg, the empanadas are amazing and have a very good price. It is a must in the city if you want to live the full experience.

Rather than spend a hundred US dollars each on a tango show, we asked at our hotel where the locals go. And it's at this cathedral that they pray tango. Off the beaten track, in a cavernous room (former garment factory?), a funky place (reminded me of the film Belleville Rendezvous), high ceiling, art, decadent, pre War Berlin, hipster, dark and evocative. Assorted tables along the edge of the large dance floor, couples, magicians really, the way the feet move so deftly, slight of hand (or foot!). Real people, not for show or for tourists. The highlight was a DJ and his accordion playing side kick, a mix of old and new tango joined on the dance floor by a lonely dancer dancing the tango by himself, and then a couple so smooth and majestic. A highlight!

I went on my own and had a great evening.I had a class with casandra and her dance partner who broke down the steps and made it easier. It was my first time and I wish I lived in the country to go again. There was a singer on later and then another dance class and then local residents were dancing. It was 100 pesos for the class and a jug of local beer was 90 pesos.

One of the things that mostly stroke me in Buenos Aires was that tango was not everywhere, In fact you had to look for it. One of the places you can go is "La cathedral". Though it is pretty close to the metro station, you have to look for it a bit cause there is no light at the entrance or any sign outside with the name "La cathedral". It is clearly not the ideal place ( there is a foul smell of mould, it is dirty and the barman totally drunk ) but it has a certain atmosphere, the music of tango swips you off your feet and the tango teachers for a minimum amount of money ( Mario and Alaxandra) if you show up around ten can teach you the secrets of tango dancing for about an hour and they are very good at what they do and very friendly.

While living in Buenos Aires, we went to La Catedral a few times. It's a great place to check out in BA to watch some tango, or take group/private lessons (we did both). We also took friends visiting us here, and they loved it. It's a funky old school gothic-ish old church. The drinks are cheap, and you get an opportunity to watch some good tango. I wouldn't say the main hall is a club atmosphere....It's more of a laid-back low-key space to watch some awesome tango, or people trying to learn tango. There are other rooms that are available to intermediate / advanced groups, and they are pretty lively and fun to watch. Highly recommend, even if just to watch and have a drink. Also -- make sure you call them to confirm hours/classes/cover charges for that day, as they change frequently.

Great night out! Tango lesson was great fun, beers were reasonable. Was recommended this place if we wanted to see 'real tango' rather than a touristic show. Plenty of dancing opportunities after the class also as the locals are more than willing to guide you! The place isn't the cleanest but I guess this adds a bit of character!

As the other reviews say, the atmosphere here is worth going for alone with it's sultry dimly lit dance hall and eclectic shabby-chic furnishing. The empanadas are cheap and tasty too.
We'd never danced Tango before and paid 30 pesos for a lesson but the instruction was minimal so we didn't learn much. I wish I'd learnt the basics before going to really enjoy it and get the most out of the experience. After the last lesson ends at 11pm, the bumbling tourists clear the dance floor and the milonga begins. More experienced dancers take the floor and the side tables fill up quickly with camera-snapping voyeurs.

I would really like to visit to tomorrow night. I'm a solo female traveller, is it ok to go alone?

Hello. I've heard some good things about this place from fellow travelers, but I'm wondering if it is safe for a solo female traveler to go there and stay out that late?

We certainly didn't need Spanish to get in the door and hang out. Pretty sure the classes here are taught in Spanish, but dance is a universal language, so my guess is you could even take a dance class without knowing much Spanish. Also, LOTS of Argentinians speak English. THis was a young crowd, so I bet lots of them would be able to help. GOod luck!
