The area
Neighbourhood: La Boca
A neighbourhood defined by its immigrant roots, La Boca still maintains this past alive in its streets today. Due to its proximity to the river, the neighbourhood became the preferred settling area for immigrants of a wide variety of origins, who ended up living together in the conventillos. Thus, these houses became a melting pot of different cultures and traditions that birthed creations like tango and lunfardo. Nowadays, this legacy can be seen and felt on Caminito Street, which welcomes visitors with colourful facades, cobblestones, and street artists showcasing their skills. Just like its neighbor San Telmo, La Boca is one of the prime destinations to experience the traditions and customs that originated from the city’s immigrant past and which have shaped its distinct identity.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On September 25, 1908, the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway was authorized to build a transporter bridge connecting Avenida La Plata in the neighbourhood Island Maciel of Dock Sud with Avenida Almirante Brown in the La Boca neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. The transporter bridge was inaugurated May 31, 1914, and operated until 1960.
It is named after a former president of Argentina Nicolás Avellaneda. The platform of the bridge measured 8 by 12 meters and could be operated from a control panel on the bridge, or from the machine house. It was designed to carry pedestrians, carts, cars and trams. In 1940 the 1650-metre-long liftable road bridge Puente Nicolás Avellaneda with 2 lanes was constructed just 100 meters away. In 1997, plans were announced to restore the bridge at a cost of US$1.2 million. The bridge in September 2017, was finally restored and reopened to the public for the first time in 57 years.
TIP: If you take a harbour tour , or a trip to Uruguay you will be able to take some better photos.

Buenos Aires Transporter Bridge was completed in 1914. The bridge was in use until 1960 and since 1999 is a National Historic Monument of Argentina. The transporter bridge was the first link to connect Buenos Aires with the outskirts on the other side of the Riachuelo River. The bridge links the Avenida La Plata in the neighbourhood Island Maciel of Dock Sud with Avenida Almirante Brown in the La Boca neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. The platform of the transporter bridge measured 8 by 12 metres and could be operated from a control stand on itself or from the machine house. It was designed to carry pedestrians, carts, cars and trams.

As I'm married to one you can imagine his excitement when we passed by this by accident. There are few left working in the world (apparently)!

This is an ugly transporter bridge in the La Boca neighbourhood right next to Caminito. It is actually a crime hotspot and tourists are advised to stay away from the base of it. Avoid.

Seeing it from a distance I was curios how it works and why such a strange design. It turns out the bridge consists of a platform that carries cars and people to the other side of the river. A truly unique system! Now the new road bridge is used (the orange one) but the old one is still there.

On the website it said that it works Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We went within hours and it was not working. I wonder if they are considering scrapping it again?
