Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

The esquina Carlos Gardel was a great experience, the service was wonderful. The show consisted of different performances of local tango dancing which was absolutely amazing. The only thing that was negative was that the food was really bad, I did not know you could pay to see the show and not eat. I recommend that you eat across the street at the Abasto mall which has some great restaurants and only see the show.

Order VIP tickets ahead of time. Go to the front of the line. As you enter the restaurant, get your photo taken with a tango dancer. SMILE! Be seated at a table that faces the stage. Receive champagne, a bottle of Malbec (Rutini). Order the lomo jugoso, and it'll be tender and medium rare. Order as an appetizer the prawn (in a yummy light sauce). Order as a dessert whatever is chocolate. We loved the cuisine! The show was terrific--a great orchestra, a variety of versions of the tango, excellent singers!!!

I was pleased we had booked this tango show, having been told it was the best.A coach picked us up from our hotel at 8pm We had a choice of starters and main course, with a selection for dessert.Wine red or white was unlimited.Staff were very attentive. The tango show started after the dinner, lasts about 90 minutes, excellent, just what you want to see.amazing show.we loved it.You can have a photo taken before the show with a dancer, and they take photos at the dinner table, which you can buy.We did not,so am not sure how much they cost.A coach returned us to our hotel.

As one other reviewer noted, stay away from the meal/show package, and grab a bite to eat at Abasto shopping centre across the street. Just buy tickets to the show, if you can do so.

The show was wonderful, but the food preceding it tasted like it was conjured up for gastrointestinal-disease patients in a hospital ... blobby, bland, undercooked, pasty and congealed. (In comparison, Swanson TV dinners look and taste like haute cuisine). It was hard to totally enjoy the tango show with that stuff churning inside me.

This is a pretty unusual criticism of food in Buenos Aires, where most restaurants (no matter how modest) and fast food joints take pride in serving up great, fresh meals.

Where to begin? Let's start at the beginning where they place your group at a long, thin table so the only way one could see the stage would be to turn ones' chair 90 degrees. Oh wait, you can't do that because the tables are so close together that everytime a waiter or customer passes behind you, you get shoved and jostled. So I guess comfort is out as is a good view of the show. I guess the point behind the seating is to fill the place as full as possible and make the most amount of money before people catch on and stop coming.

Next step, the food. Blah. It was universally bad. I tried the empenada for appetizer and it tasted like a microwaved Hot Pocket. The steak was tough and my partner as well as several other people in our group ordered the lasagna with "a hint of spinach" . It was stuffed with nothing but soggy spinach. One bite was enough for some, others didn't touch it at all. Desert was nothing special either.

Final step, the show. Being unable to see from our seats, we attempted to move to an open space at a type of bar at the back of the theatre. We were asked to return to our seats because these bar seats were reserved for people that had not yet arrived. I believe they were actually kept open for any walk-ins as the show had already begun. I explained that we were unable to see from our seats and was simply told "I know". I spent the rest of the show standing at the back of the theatre and my partner sat on the steps leading to the top level.

Would we have enjoyed the show if we had better seats and some degree of comfort? Maybe but I also believe that Tango is an aquired taste. Did we enjoy ourselves? Lets see... bad seats, bad food and uncaring staff. A definite no! If you must see Tango, try somewhere else.

I guess it is clear to any reasonably intelligent person that a tango show in Buenos Aires would be somewhat "touristy", but what we experienced at Esquina Carlos Gardel was truly outrageous. We had been convinced that it was worth paying the extra money for a "VIP seat" upstairs and - given that it was a touristy venue - we were not expecting great things. However, we would at least have expected a dinner which is average for Argentinian standards. Unfortunately, the dinner was the worst food that we throughout our 3-week Argentina trip and the venue charged us as much as we paid for our best dinner experience in Buenos Aires (Osaka Restaurant). The starter (some kind of salmon terrine) was tasteless and the steak was without any exaggeration the worst meat that we had in Argentina. This was topped off by some very average wine.

We would not even have said anything if the show had been somewhat original, but in fact this really was very average too and the dancing did not even last for two hours. We did complain at the management of the venue, but our arguments were ignored and treated arrogantly.

If you are really into tango, then get a ticket without dinner, but do go somewhere else for your steak - ANY parrilla in Buenos Aires will be better, at a fraction of the cost.

We were there, my wife and I, on Jun 8th, strongly recommended by our hotel as one of the best tango shows in town. I can hardly imagine the worst ones.
The place is a mess right before entrance, when our shuttle driver, who picked us up at the hotel with other guests from other hotels, stayed parked for more than 20 minutes in front of the place with no explanation to us. And we saw several people entering the house before us. As soon as we got there, the place looks like a large saloon with tables glued to each other. I could not sit side by side with my wife and we had not even a chance to talk to each other, since you have to scream to do so. Besides, the tables are so glued to each other that we had no privacy talk at all. I had to turn almost 180 degrees all the time to watch the show, the food was terrible and the wine even worse. And it was fairly expensive (more than USD 300 for the two of us). Except for the good musicians, there´s nothing good in this show. The tango dancers looked like gymnasts doing every sort of acrobacies, but not dancing. Don´t waste your money here. It´s a tourist trap.

Dancing was fine but I left feeling taken advantage of due to our experience ordering drinks (note house beer and wine are included so this is an issue only if you're ordering outside of this). My husband doesn't drink beer/wine so he ordered two cocktails and was charged 250 pesos (US $29) each. He was presented the bill in the dark and was asked to sign it on the spot, before the show ended. He did so as he did not want to make a scene while the performance was going on, in spite of the fact that we were severely overcharged. In addition he was certain the second drink was a cheap well vodka in spite of specifying Grey Goose. We live in New York City and are comfortable paying high prices for drinks but charging $30 for a low end vodka is not acceptable. I don't appreciate being taken advantage of and that's how I felt about my experience at this show. After the show I emailed my contact at Carlos Esquina to express frustration and got no response or indication that there was any mistake in the pricing.

The Tango Show we went to see at this place booked as part of our TRAVELSPHERE holiday has been a total Tourist Rip-Off. It is the most usury cynical waste of time I can remember from my mature years. I am sure you could guess the format. Rushed meals mediocre show rushed out. The most important consideration is the sad waist of holiday time. The show is not good Tango and the fact of the average food is only incidental to the waste of life it is attending this show. It is an expensive rip of yes, but this is only extra to the fact that the show is rubbish. PLEASE be warned. Ken Jaques

During dinner and show we were seated together like cattle, we were sitting so close that if my boyfriend tried to move he would touch the lady beside hims bum. The seating gave no enjoyment of the dinner you just wanted to get it finished with and see the show. During dinner you are also bothered by people wanting to sell you things. The food was fine.

The show was EXCELLENT. Very entertaining, the only thing I didnt like was the waiter hassling me in the middle of the show for tips even though eveything was prepaid.

On this show go VIP or show only
