About
In the neighbourhood of San Telmo it is located the most classic house of tango of all times, El Viejo Almacén. It offers shows since 1969 and preserves the architecture and atmosphere of tango culture. The house has a unique magic in which the cultural barrier between different nationalities ceases to exist and we all joined by one of the greatest expressions of any culture: the language of music. It has a proposal of Dinner & Show, with a menu of international cuisine a la carte and an extensive wine cellar with the best national wines. Then, any member of the public is delighted with an excellent show of tango composed by prestigious dancers, the famous Quintet of El Viejo Almacén and two highly recognized national singers, who play some of the traditional songs of tango´s history. The most acclaimed tango show in the world accompanied by fine cuisine, recalls the bygone era of tango and takes us back to times of outlaws and suburbs in the ground where tango has its roots ... Buenos Aires.

The area
Neighbourhood: San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.

We been at the tango eve in the 7.1.2020..
We had the VIP option, despite that we don't know what happened with the transparwnt that should take us from the hotel, the good thing that we regestered the show from the hotel so they could arrange everything for us.
The dinner was so dellicious, and the wine was perfect.
After the dinner we went to the show, took picture for us and we buy it as a wounderful memory of the place..
The tango was brilliant and the two shows of best singers were amazing.
One of thwm was the most famous singer in buenos aires "hugo maecello"..
It was unforgettable eve, special and let us know argentina's art in a good way

This was such a great show! We had dinner at Crizia (7:30 reservation was delicious) and then pick up at 9:20 for the show which was all perfect timing. We took 4 kids ages 9-18. So entertaining and the history behind the building and dance culture was way better than imagined! We had dessert at the show- also highly recommend. Lovely people and evening!

We booked a dinner and seats at the Almacen tango show as part of a package through our hotel in Buenos Aires. The package included transportation from our hotel, dinner, and the tango show. The price was U$S180.00. First, let me say that tango show was excellent and the dancers and musicians were wonderful. The dinner was *horrible*. We were given the choice of about 4 entrees, our fish looked like some sort of bottomfeeder that had more bones than meat. The other dishes that fellow patrons were ordering didn't look any better. What ruined our dinner more than anything was a couple sitting next to us that chainsmoked through nearly a pack of cigarettes between them. With both our asthma and allergy problems, we couldn't have tasted the food even if it was good. Fortunately, smoking is not allowed at the tango show, and we enjoyed seeing the aforementioned dinner smokers throw a bit of a fit when told they would have to go outside to smoke.
The best thing to do is to eat dinner somewhere else and then go to the show, it's well worth it!

I have written about 130 reviews on Tripadvisor.com and take providing feedback very seriously. I believe in the power of feedback. I also believe I am very fair with my reviews...rarely giving anyone a 1 star. However, El Viejo doesn't even deserve 1 star. Please read this review and consider NOT rewarding a company that uses bureaucracy and "POLICY" to avoid providing baseline customer service.
Prior to arriving in Buenos Aires, I did a lot of research on Trip Advisor to chose a Tango show. After reading many reviews, I chose to give El Viejo a shot because of the intimate setting and the quality of the dancers. We reserved a VIP experience for 4 online that included a pick up and drop off at our hotel. We received 2 confirmation e-mails from El Viejo. The 2nd e-mail told us we would need to reconfirm our reservations on the day of the show. After making the reservation online, we logged back into their website and gave our credit card information to pre-pay for the reservation, too.
The night before the show at 7 p.m., I had a question. I asked our guide, a local, to help us call El Viejo to reconfirm our reservation and to ask a few questions. (My Spanish is limited, but I understand almost everything.) Our question was simple: What if we want to get picked up from somewhere else instead of our hotel? Using our guide as our interpretor, we were told that if we wanted to change the pickup location, we would need to call back the next day before 6 p.m., if not, we would be picked up at our hotel at 9:30 per the reservation. Our guide clearly told them we wanted to reconfirm our reservation. They told him we did not need to call back unless we were changing our pick up location. Our guide told us we were all set.
The next night we got dressed up and were in the hotel lobby at 9:30. We waited. At 9:45 I got nervous and stood in line to speak to the concierge. At 9:40 the concierge called El Viejo and after a few minutes speaking in Spanish looked up at me and said: "Your reservation was cancelled because they say you did not call today to reconfirm." He then told me the manager spoke English and I could speak with her. She began by stating to me policy that was included in my e-mail that we must call the same day. The call went like this:
"It is our POLICY and in your e-mail that you must call the same day."
"But I called yesterday to reconfirm and asked about the car." I said
"Yes, I know you called yesterday, but our POLICY is that you must call today."
"But we gave you our hotel information, our room number, and we even paid on-line"
"Your payment was not accepted because tou didn't call back...your call yesterday was about the car service, but our POLICY is you must call the same day..."
"But nobody said we had to call back today" I said
"I can send you the e-mail that cleary states our POLICY..."
"But why didn't you tell us yesterday when we called that we still had to call back?" I asked
"I can send you the e-mail" she repeated, "It clearly says you MUST call today."
I contacted our local guide who made a call on our behalf because he, too didn't understand the issue. He clearly told them we wanted to reconfirm. He called me back and told me they were offering me a 10% discount for the next night....with no apology. I told them to keep their 10% and that I would never reward such idiotic nonsense. Yes, the e-mail says to call the same day...but when we called at 7 p.m. the night before to reconfirm, nobody said anything about policy then. Nobody reminded us we had to call back. And they just didn't care.
I ask you, fellow Trip Advisor users, do not reward such behavior. I expect such idiocy from a government bureaucrat, but not from a business that depends on customer satisfaction to stay in business. Please do NOT reward them. Their employees are not empowered to think, and until that changes, they will continue to act like a government bureaucracy versus a business.

I was in Buenos Aires last week for business and had Saturday to enjoy the city. Tango show was meant to put a cherry on a cake. However, it kind of failed.
El Viejo Almacen was recommended to me by hotel concierge. He told me it was a "less touristy" and is very good to see. I paid 400Argentinian Pesos for dinner and a show and transportation to and from the hotel.
Dinner and the show is actually in two different places (even though very close to each other) so don't think that you will be eating and watching at the same time. First you will be having food and then cross the street to the show venue.
1. Transportation- getting to the venue was an issue, as they forgot to pick me up. They did eventually send a car (1hr after arranged time). Transportation back was ok.
2. Dinner- felt like eating in a school canteen.Seating is very cramped; menu was very basic accompanied by vinegar wine and alluminium cutlery. Not even mentioning presentation. Service was ok but waiters pushed for tips at the end. Even though I was going to leave normal 10% tip, you felt a bit uncomfortable with unnecessary pressure.
3. Show- firstly, you are shown a short video explaining history of the venue and its owners. It would have been better if they have spent time telling you about history of the tango dance itself.
Music was ok, but musicians were squeezed into a tiny space at the back of the stage.
Dancers were ok. Out of 4 pairs- two were good, there were not, however, Argentinean.
Quality & choreography of the dance were limited by a tiny stage space. Space around the stage is also very limited and at some points during the dance you can just hope that dancer's head does not hit the top level seating!
I did feel bad for one dancer, as she ended up flying into a chair and obviously hurting herself, but being a professional performer carried on regardless!
Seating- well, if you lucky you will get an upstairs seat or the one facing the stage so you will probably have better viewing experience. I was put on the corner, next to front door so most of my time spent looking at, backs, shoes and, unintentionally, up dancers' skirts. At this point, may I add, I'm a female so probably not a best customer for that kind of a show.
"Champaign" served before the show probably came from the same vinegar grape, as the wine served during the dinner.
I agree with previous comments that the show is more of a talent show. Yes, music was good, and singers were ok, but definitely not enough tango. I've been to better shows outside Argentina.
I went to this show as it was recommended by the concierge at Sheraton hotel. I obviously forgot that concierge can get a "commission" from the place recommended. That will teach me not do some research beforehand.
Overall, I would not recommend this place to my friends. Next day, I spoke to an Argentinean lady at the airport and she told me that even though it is the oldest venue in town it is also the worst one!

I was quite concerned while buying tickets as just the show (no dinner) is around 85 USD and I'm not a tango fan. We were recommended to book a table downstairs close to the stage to see footwork, which we did. The very first intro dance was jaw dropping. Everything in the show was perfect - musicians, singers, folklore band, and of course 8 tango dancers - and worth every penny. So glad I went here. Highly recommended.

We were told that this was the place to go to watch traditional tango, since it wasn't too Hollywood. We had no idea that we were in the same club that tango was first made popular. I was a bit worried that it was so pricey and the show was an hour and a half, but they did not disappoint! The performers were all AMAZING, singers, dancers, and musicians. The costumes and dancers were beautiful as well. We were just awe struck at the quality of dancing and the singers' powerful voices.
I doubt you will see tango like this anywhere else in the world!!!

This rating is an average of 5 (Excellent) for the Tango Show and 3 (Average) for the Dinner. Like many dinner theatres in the States, the show (not the food) is the main attraction. The Tango Show was terrific -- music from a live band and several very talented dancers really put on an awesome display of the tango. The theater is quite small (maybe a few hundred people) so you are seated close to the action. The dinner was served in the restaurant across the street. The food was only okay. (I didn't take any photos of my meal like I usually do, so it must not have been memorable.)

We value your opinion.
We share your opinion of ability on the show. Our capacity is for approximately 150 people.
Our building was declared "site of cultural interest" and is located within the historical area of our city, which is why we cannot change anything about its structure.
We greatly appreciate your input.
We hope you come back soon!

This show was recommended by my hotel. I went for VIP package and no dinner.
Price was quoted as $ 70 with up market drinks. Got to the place and a lamp was hanging in front of me distractingthe view of the stage. The drinks were at best standard house wine. The show was charged on my card at $ 82 plus I was one of very few people who had an envolope thrust in my face with the notice that tips were not included. The service consisted of filling up my glass twice when I had not drunk a lot of the wine, because it was not very nice. So why give it any stars at all? Well the show itself is pretty good. A very good band, decent singers and good dancers. A lot of it not directly related to tango perhaps, but still a nice evening if overpriced. Go for standard tickets, pay cash and decided if you actually recieved anything deserving of a tip. Or find somewhere else.

I can't recall if there was an extra fee but I don't believe so, I think it was reserved from when you book the show, however, ask them when you make the reservation.

Is there a dress code for the show and dinner?
Thanks!
Written 22 August 2017
There is no dress code.
But argentinians are known to be a very well dressed people, so it is a good idea to wear something nice, but not necessarily something formal. I went dressed with a chino, shirt and a coat, and felt very comfortable with my style.
Greetings and bon voyage!
