Top ways to experience Puerto Madero
The area
Neighbourhood: Puerto Madero
From its refurbished red brick buildings and port cranes to its modern skyscrapers and luxurious apartment buildings, Puerto Madero is the perfect combination of old and new. The river provides a quiet, relaxing atmosphere that contrasts with the hustle and bustle of heavy traffic just blocks away. Across the river, flanked by skyscrapers, are beautiful parks and quiet streets that make this neighbourhood a unique destination in a city as busy as Buenos Aires. The restaurants, bars, and nightclubs on the docks make it a prime spot for nights out and have come to symbolise this area. Puerto Madero is even more striking after dark, when the lights from the docks and skyscrapers glow against the night sky.

A waterfront area worth a visit if you are museumed out
A great place to walk around. A large restaurant area on the water on both sides. Two places to cross. Historical ship in port to view when open. Not accessible by subway so you have to walk from the last stop or take a taxi. We had trouble finding a taxi to take us there during dinner time.

    Cool vibes
Really cool vibe and plenty of choices to eat and drink. We even got the bonus of a traditional tango dance on the bridge which was brilliant. Places to try include a restaurant called Chana (very cool and relaxed seating) and Juan Bautista Parrilla Gaucha for a decent steak restaurant (but can be busy so plan ahead)

    Pleasantly surprised.
Great, atmosphere and food. Attentive staff very friendly. Food was plentiful and delicious. Drinks were cold and refreshing. Ordered the veal and it filled in entire plate. One of the largest I’ve ever ever had. Rest of the party had steaks all pleasantly surprised.

    Beautiful
Nice walk through the new buildings, born on the old constructions. The newest part of BA, high and beautiful buildings, expensive apartments, fashionable shops. One of the best parts of BA

Great waterfront area of Buenos Aires
We really enjoyed visiting this area of Buenos Aires. Please note that the waterway is a CANAL and not a river or harbor. That said, be sure to visit the Woman's Bridge that has a part that looks like a woman's leg during a Tango.

Puerto Madero is a revamped dockside area.
Its converted redbrick buildings contain upscale steakhouses popular with tourists and business lunchers. Sleek 50 stories high skyscrapers house multinational corporations and high-value apartments, facing the Rio de la Plata. Most of them are concentrated along the Dock 3 of Puerto Madero; these include Alvear Tower 784 ft, Renoir II 561 ft, Mulieris Towers 528 ft, El Faro Towers 520 ft, Repsol-YPF Tower 520 ft, Le Parc Tower 518 ft, and Chateau Tower of Puerto Madero 512 ft. Currently under construction the 649 ft tall Harbour Tower, set to be completed in 2024 as the second tallest skyscraper in Argentina. There are also in the neighbourhood several museums and art galleries, among them the Faena Arts Center, the Fortabat Art Collection, the De la Cárcova Museum, and the museum ships ARA Uruguay and ARA Presidente Sarmiento. Trails loop around several lakes at the wildlife-rich Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, which is nice for families and joggers. Check out the new Puente de la Mujer a graceful suspension bridge, against the old Puente Transbordador bridge Nicolás Avellaneda. TIP: Nice place to walk around. Beautiful and safe place to visit.
We spent half a day walking around and enjoying the river banks and Puente des las mujeres bridge. In the evening we went to Sky Bar located at top floor of hotel Alvear. Food, drinks, views and DJ were the best. Lovely nightlife.

We arrived late afternoon for our stay at the Hilton Buenos Aires and we asked the concierge for a suggestion of how to best stretch our legs and see a bit of BA. He told us to go out the door turn left, go ½ block and walk along the canal. How far I asked? It depends on how far you want to walk. It makes a loop and there are five bridges that allow you to cross over whenever you want. We had no idea what to expect and could not possibly have been more pleased.

As is true with most of the world’s major ports, Buenos Aires outgrew its original port due to the creation of super tankers etc. and BA has done a wonderful job of preserving the old while building out to create the new. The old port (now Puerto Madero) has been refashioned into a canal that serves small yachts, sailboats and motorboats on its water, while converting old warehouses into upscale shops and restaurants. Additionally international hotels and business have surrounded the canal with architecturally-tasteful skyscrapers that make the area even more inviting. The whole lace really comes alive in the evenings with street performers and lots else to see and enjoy.

Well lit, safe and spotlessly clean, visitors can spend hours or even an entire day just along the Puerto Madero. Staying in this immediate area also places you within walking distance of Plaza de Mayo, the Teatro Colon, the Ecological Reserve and the Boat Terminals. We stayed at the Hilton for 7 nights, saw almost every major tourist site in the city and only used a taxi twice. However, taxis are exceedingly cheap as you can go from the Puerto Madero to almost anywhere else in the city for less than $10 US.

If you stay in this area, you will be glad you did. If you do not, be sure to set aside at least an afternoon and early evening to walk the area and soak in the ambiance.

During our week in Buenos Aires we visited Puerto Madero several times and were struck by what a contrast it is with the rest of the city.

This neighborhood is built on reclaimed land and sits adjacent to the river. It is filled with soaring skyscrapers which are a mix of residential and commercial use buildings. The area is connected to central Buenos Aires by several bridges, one of which is the iconic Puente de La Mujer (Women’s Bridge).

There are numerous restaurants and bars all along the strip which makes the place come alive after hours. This is a trendy, cool spot that definitely deserves a visit.

Insider tip: All the street names in Puerto Madero are feminine.

We enjoyed this area and ended up moving accommodation from the central city to Puerto Madero because it had an easy going and safe feeling, even at night.
Lots of restaurants to choose from but even if your not hungry just wondering around is nice. Shame the water is so polluted - this is the only negative.
Easy walking distance to the neighbourhoods tourists usually want to see.

Definitely recommend La Parolaccia Trattoria for the best pasta I have ever had, as well as their sister restaurant Mare. Lobo Cafe (on the riverfront) or Le Bie' for coffee or breakfast, and Le Pain Quotidien for anything in between. The movie theatre has English movies (with Spanish subtitles) for all titles. Great place to experience Buenos Aires from.

Wife and I started an evening stroll along the bridge. Tango dancers, street musicians and street vendors were part of the ambiance. Most of the adjacent bars and restaurants seemed over priced and under rated.

We had half a day at the end of our trip in Buenos Aires. We had visited the main areas of BA except for this one. The Reserva Ecologica was free, a pleasant walk where you could spot some interesting birds and a nice place to spend a few hours once you have seen and explored most other places. It is not what you go to BA for but was a lovely way to end the holiday before a long flight home.

This area of Buenos Aires is located on the Rio La Plata which separates Argentina and Uruguay. It contains the port for the ferry boats to both the capital city of Montevideo and the touristed town of Colonia in Uruguay. The trip to Montevideo takes about 2 1/2 hours aboard a luxurious three story ferry boat which also transports vehicles. The ferry has three classes of passage, several cafeterias, and an enormous upscale duty free shop.

Nice enough but really not sure why this gets such high ratings and the number 2 place to visit in Buenos Aires?? It wouldn't make my list. It has nothing on the amazing old city and attractions such as Teatro Colon, Recoleta Cemetary, La Boca, and just walking around the old areas. We ate here but generally restuarants were more expensive and there wasn't anything special about the location.

This place is full of life with music and lots of eat outs. There is a floating museum out of an old frigate for history buffs. If you’re lucky you may get to see some Tango dancers too.

We were on the hop on hop off bus and got off at Puerto Madero. It's a modern city built on reclaimed land.

Lots of skyscrapers housing both businesses and high end apartments. Also, lots of eateries and waterholes. Be prepared to pay a wee bit higher prices at these establishments in Puerto Madero.

The suspension bridge, Puente de la Mujer, is supposed to represent a couple doing the tango.

Was told to come visit in the evenings, when it's all lit up but we never got a chance to.

Maybe the next time we're back in Buenos Aires.
