The area
Neighbourhood: Recoleta
Characterised by the French-style mansions which are the legacy of its aristocratic past, Recoleta is the true “Paris of the South.” Walking around this neighbourhood is an experience like no other in Buenos Aires: its streets are lined with elegant apartment buildings, exclusive boutiques, and former mansions turned into high-end hotels and embassies, which exude an alluring air of sophistication and class. You'll also find a rich cultural scene centred on the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library, and the Recoleta Cultural Center; as well as some great shopping spots, like the Buenos Aires Design Mall with an artists' fair set up in Plaza Francia every weekend.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The National library of Argentina is absolutely huge. It is not my favourite library in the city due to the fact that it isn't very aesthetic from the outside and it looks old and worn. Despite this, the interior is quite the opposite and there are some very modern aspects to the place. The most notable mention however, is found on the top floor which is a communal study space and offers stunning views of the city.

It is a place that is not essential to go if you are going to be a few days in Buenos Aires.
They must do a lot of silence that many people spend concentrating for their exams. :)

This place offers a decent view, a place to sit and read, and free guided tours. Not a must do, but a nice place to stop in for a break. You can also walk the area as it is nice.

If you are expecting to easily go to a library to do work, this place complicates everything. 4-5 security check ins, and when I tried to enter they said the area is only for special students. Huge waste of my time and the general public seating is so small.

Guess what, you can't take pictures inside the building... It's a library??? Front kiosk dude was rude, spanish only and didn't really want anything to do with tourists... Keep your spaceship library... moving on to the next attraction!

This place has kitsch value and is interesting architecturally but as a library it's a monumental fail. We were looking to browse the stacks and this is not an option-where are those dastardly books hiding? The floors you can visit have lecture spaces and along the wall closed off mini-libraries with really outdated furniture and a terrible cafe that could be so great if someone took the time. The interior furnishings have never been updated and look like they're 40 years old-which i think they are. The interesting thing is that this library opened in 1992! So it opened as an outdated monolith. My guess is that they bought all the furnishings when the design was approved and ground broke in the 60s and 70s.

You cannot miss this building when strolling by. The building embodies the brutalist movement in a most overwhelming way. The grounds immediately around the library were some of the least well kept I noticed in BA and the library did not appear to be in good repair.

When I went it was really weird, they asked for our passports or some other form of ID (not to check anything out, just to enter), then when you get up there, there aren't really any books to browse like in an American public library- just desks and card catalogs. The view was nice, but overall, weird.

Wonderful experience.
The Biblioteca stands as one of the finest examples of brutalist architecture, impressing with its formidable form and monumental presence. At first glance, the building astonishes with its massive concrete structure, seemingly floating above the ground on powerful supports. This is not just a library, but an architectural icon that perfectly captures the spirit of the era in which it was conceived.

It’s a place that attracts not only architecture enthusiasts but also those seeking inspiration and an extraordinary experience.

The Biblioteca is a true masterpiece of brutalism—raw, majestic, and inspiring. It’s well worth a visit.

I recommend do not enter, the personnel is just rude and there aren’t books. It’s a sad reflex of how the public sector is just a mess.

I took some pictures from OUTSIDE and the security came to stop me. Damn is a library not an police station or something.
