- Dave48838Greenville, Michigan659 contributionsWorth a PauseThis is a lovely cathedral that gives the feeling of open spaciousness. The decorations and accoutrements are what you might expect in most cathedrals. The building is right on the main square of the city. The cathedral is special for two reasons: First, one can imagine Pope Francis saying mass when he was the bishop in this house of worship. Secondly, it has the grave of San Martin, the national hero. When we were visiting, school groups were being instructed at the tomb and we were fortunate enough to see a military honor guard approach and conduct a tribute.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023
- Travelfun001Oakville, Canada3,578 contributionsPope's former parishAfter many visits to Europe I don't visit a lot of churches anymore but we decided to go in. It's a beautiful and well maintained cathedral. It also houses the remains of Argentine Liberator General Jose de San Martin with an honour guard and we happened to be there for the changing of the guard. Free admission and it was busy when we were here.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024
- SnowyShastaPortland, Oregon2,427 contributionsUnique exterior, imposing interiorThe exterior of this cathedral is quite different, looking more like a colonnaded Greek or Roman building than a church. But inside it looks very imposing, with a long nave and lots of stone in the walls and paintings on the ceiling. We always enjoy visiting cathedrals and other large churches, which are generally beautiful and ornate, usually free to enter, and a cool refuge on a hot day. This cathedral was the home to the current Pope Francis, so there were some signs and other notifications about recognizing him. It was a worthwhile stop in our walk around the Plaza de Mayo and its buildings.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2024
- Skeney57Sydney, Australia25,011 contributionsFrom Jorge to FrancisThis Cathedral is huge. It has 3 aisles with several side altars. It is the end result of several buildings that date back to the 1500's but the church was consecrated in 1779 and finally completed in 1822. It contains many classical touches and the main wood altarpiece dates back to 1785. The Cathedral is actually named after the Holy Trinity but is very long in Spanish! It also contains the mausoleum of Gen. Jose De San Martin, the founder of Argentina, Chile & Peru who lived from 1778-1850 when he died in France. His remains were placed in the Cathedral in 1880 in a spectacular setting, with Army guards on site when the mausoleum is open. The Cathedral is also famous as the present Pope Francis was previously Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio and served there for 15 years. Well worth a visit to explore the many sights & museum to the Pope.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 May 2024

The art work on the ceilings were amazing. With such attention to detail and still is beaytiful. The arches with which they are holding the ceilings is art of ingenuity of the times. We entered this sacred place without much expectation and we were left with our jaws dropped. Pope Francis performed sermons here for 20 years and San Martin’s tomb is in this church. Please make sure to visit. It is located in Playa de Mayo.

This church does not look like a typical Catholic church from the outside. That alone makes it worth the visit. Inside, however, it is gorgeous, with things to see in every corner. The mausoleum of San Martín is splendid, and the formal guard imposes a sense of gravity as well. Finally, since it was the home church of the current pope, it's worth seeing his context and background before the papacy.

I do not know what all the fuss is about, but this was by far the busiest cathedral in our visit to South America. People were everywhere. Fortunately we arrived just in time to witness the changing of the guard, which was a real highlite. It seems that this happens every two hours starting at 9:30 AM.

The cathedral is open 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM on Mondays-Fridays, 9AM-6:45PM on Saturdays and Sundays. No admission fee. Photos without flash allowed. This cathedral was built on the site of an original colonial church and was finished in 1827. It is a religious and architectural landmark that contains the mausoleum of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's most revered hero. He led the country to independence in 1816.

Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral is the main Catholic church in Buenos Aires. It is located in the city center, overlooking Plaza de Mayo, on the corner of San Martín and Rivadavia streets, in the San Nicolás neighbourhood. It is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires and the primatial church of Argentina. Beautiful interior.

This cathedral is also known as Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires). It’s right next to the Plaza de Mayo. This was where Pope Francis led Mass when he was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. The cathedral also contains the mausoleum of General José de San Martín, the man that led the struggle for independence of Argentina from the Spanish Empire.
It was definitely worth a visit to see the ornate interior of the cathedral. There is no admission fee to go inside. Photography is permitted inside with no flash. There was a sign in Spanish at the entrance featuring Pope Francis.

Place full of history and art. Its architecture, its paintings on the ceilings, the tomb of the Liberator San Martin. It is a combination between religious faith, art and history. If you are lucky you can admire its excellent choir accompanied by the organ or the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Liberator San Martin.

Catholoc churches in south America tend to be pretty impressive and that is no exception. Lot´s of decorations impressive architecture and interesting history all combined without the bad conscience that below the cathedral is a no christian temple buried by the Christians.
Your guide will get you there so simply enjoy.

Catedral Primada is a stunning cathedral in the center of Beunos Aires. The size of the building is breath taking and the details throughout are amazing. Personally, I loved the domed ceiling that reminded me of the Pantheon and their tomb of the unknown also is exceptionally moving, complete with guards in dress uniforms and flags. It was also heartening to see the church activity used by the community, with various outreach projects highlighted at the entrance to the cathedral. Definitely want to spend an hour here walking around and taking in all of the details...there certainly are plenty of them.

Hello. Can anyone tell me when the changing of the guards takes place during the day? I'd like to overlap my visit here with being able to see that as well. Gracias!

Yes. Whoops. I wrote about the London changing of the guard. I saw the guards walk from the Casa Primada to the Casa Rosada. They change about every two hours, though I'm not sure how the Covid 19 epidemic is currently affecting tourist sites operations and hours in Argentina.
