The area
Neighbourhood: San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.

We decided to go to a wine tasting one night which was only a 5 minute walk from our hotel in San Telmo.
Our wine guide was young, but knew quite a bit about all of the wines we were tasting. Really nice girl.
I am a chard person and she introduce me Kaiken Ultra Chardonnay and I love it, but can't find it in the US. Darn.
Very nice time, a must.

Located just a skip from the famous San Telmo Market and really close to Defensa street, this charming place (Trip Advisor, you silly people, this is not a restaurant) is good for a lot of things. You could do a wine-tasting with your friends (you can sit outside in front of the store or in a larger indoor area). You can pop in and grab a bottle of wine. You can practice your Spanish. Or you can just shop/stare at bottles of wine. Here are a few observations and tips:
The shop looks slightly out of place in the neighborhood, with its huge "WINE SHOP" sign in the front, and its pristine interior. These folks clearly cater to tourists (all kinds), but don't let that stop you from going in. The staff is really friendly (I have been there several times and only one guy that I have observed has any command of English) and they genuinely love wine and their approach. You'll find all prices here (I noticed as low as 90ARS and way up into the 800ARS range) and a seriously impressive selection. Malbec is king here, of course, but it's how these guys can show you all the shades and characters of Malbec that's impressive. They specialize in small vineyards, and that's what makes it so great. You'll grab a bottle and realize that you won't be able to find this "back home" and you will be okay with that, because that's not what this is about.
As you peruse the wine, a staff member will almost invariably bring you a glass of something to sip on. It's a total guilt/marketing thing (who could leave without buying something after that gesture, right?) but it's just so darned nice.
The staff knows its selection. Trust me. You will also notice that there's mostly red here. This is Argentina, folks, You do not go to a wine shop to buy white in Argentina. That said, if you insist, they have some things to try. Granted, the staff doesn't seem to know nearly as much about the whites as the reds, but why should they? There are some chardonnays that are pretty similar to California (think butter, oak, yadda yadda) with some on the more floral side (almost Viognier-ish). They have a cute selection of bubbles and rose as well.
You might be thinking, well, I can go to the grocery store down the street and get a cheaper bottle of wine. Yes, you can. But you can't get these wines there. That's the point of this store, and it's worth the trip. Plan on spending about 180ARS for a decent malbec, and simply appreciate the experience of having shopped there.
They prefer cash. Credit cards accepted, but they add a fee for VISA/MC and even more for AMEX.

Thanks for the service however after buying a case of wine to take home we realised that this shop overcharged us to the tune of 200 pesos per bottle - thats 1200 pesos! Beware people please check prices as you will get ripped off!

On a two week stay in a San Telmo apartment, we bought our dinner wines almost daily in this lovely shop. Specialty is Mendoza wines (of course), but we were also introduced to some lovely CabSauvs from Patagonia. Paula was super helpful, respectful of the price ranges we gave her each day, and quick to offer tastings. Although we only bought to take away, the sidewalk table looked like an inviting place to watch the evening street life in this eclectic neighbourhood. Wide range of wines at wide range of prices, and no snobbery here!

We stopped into this wine shop as we were staying nearby to inquire about a wine tasting. We were told that the English speaking person would be available the next day, so we popped in mid-day the next day and asked for a wine tasting in one hour's time. When we came back we were treated to a beautiful setup and such warm hospitality. We got a standard and a reserve tasting so that we could try the most possible. After a short and really informative video about Argentinian wines, Jesus gave us much more information using a map and explaining each of the wines we were tasting. He has an obvious passion for wine and was able to answer all of our questions and engage in a really enlightening discussion around the wine. We wanted to learn a lot so this is exactly what we were looking for! The wines we tasted were a really broad range of varietals and regions, so it was super informative and really opened our eyes to quality Argentinian wines. The tasting was not rushed at all, we were able to leisurely enjoy everything, and they brought out some cheeses for us as well.
We came back at the end of our second week to buy several bottles to take home and the young lady who helped us was super friendly, professional and helpful. They had the bubble wrapped wine shaped bags for purchase, which were perfect for packing in our suitcase. We easily brought home to the USA 7 bottles in our checked luggage with no issues and no customs charges (we told them we were bringing in several bottles).
All in all, HIGHLY recommend Tierra Mendocina for a formal tasting, for trying some wines by the glass (they have a charming patio out front), and for buying wine to drink or take home. Just keep in mind that if you want an English tasting, you may need to stop in the day before or have your hotel call and ensure it's possible.

Had a wonderful time with Flávio. He was great on picking different wines and pairings. Sat and probably drank 4 bottles between the 3 of us. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone!!!

This place is fantastic! We went here as part of a walking tour. Flávio, the owner, is just delightful. He opened some amazing Malbecs for us to taste. He has on fun music videos and will play whatever you want to hear/watch -- he put on some tango for us and then some traditional folk music. He has really great wines. The wine tasting was fun, and we purchased some bottles of wine for our house. We really enjoyed everything he selected for us. We came back a couple of days later to buy some more wine, and he immediately poured all 3 of us glasses of wine to enjoy while we were there. I highly recommend this for a wine tasting and to purchase wine if you are staying in San Telmo. Thanks, Flávio!

We found this place when we were wandering about San Telmo. It’s a wine shop and vinoteca. We got a table outside and the friendly manager recommended several different wines to try so I knew what to buy. It was a great introduction to Argentinean wines!

We happened upon this location while exploring San Telmo and are so glad we stopped in for a wine tasting. The owner was very charming, pleasant and very excited to share his knowledge with us. The wines were delicious and very reasonably priced.
