About
Mindful that no single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties, Neil Ellis set out to identify distinct terroir in which individual varieties will excel. He placed the emphasis not only on the environment but also on caring viticultural practises by a dedicated team of growers which extends through to the winemaking practises. Today the journey of Neil Ellis Wines is not only of Neil Ellis anymore. After four decades of making wine, the next stage of the journey has begun with Neil's son, Warren, sharing responsibilities as winemaker and viticulturist in the pursuit of quality winemaking.

Beautiful interior, but that is it! This wine farm has an extremely unfriendly atmosphere and vibe. Jacobus lacked knowledge and right in the middle of our wine tasting he just disappeared inside, not to return. Eventually I went to enquire where he was, just to find that Jacobus was busy with helping young ladies. Chatting and laughing. He had a wine tasting table to attend to.There were other staff members that could have attended to them.We flew to Cape Town for the long weekend to experience great wine tasting and this was by far our worst wine tasting we ever had on any wine farm. The worst about this wine farm is that Jacobus told us this wine farm is family orientated. That we could appreciate, but two aspects that just don't work. This farm actually doesn't have any space for children to play. The only other couple there besides us had 3 children. The grass area was super small. Way smaller than a normal family garden. This couples kids were totally out of control. Super loud, rude and unruly. Kicking a rugby ball which obviously landed between the four of us on numerous occasions. We brought this up with Jacobus and he did absolutely nothing. Just telling us it's a family orientated wine farm. By the owners orders. Discretion wasn't on the table. Never again! There are many other way more professional, friendly wine farms with ample space for children to play. Don't waste time on this farm. It has a cold atmosphere with inadequate staff. Feels like a pop up shop, not a wine farm. Although their wines are good, they didn't earn our respect. We will, because of this experience also never buy a wine in Woolies from them again. There bad attitudes and ambiance didn't appeal to us.

What an excellent experience! We were served by Tessa and she went well out of her way to make us feel welcome. Great knowledge of the wine making process alongside delicious wines. A great way to spend the afternoon after driving all the way from Cape Town. A definite recommendation 👌

We had a spare hour in our day and decided to introduce the new 1st year student to a wine farm on her doorstep. The seating outside has a stunning view of the surrounding mountains and vineyards. There are 3 types of wine tastings to choose from. The cheese platter went very well with the tasting!

Part of our wine tasting day. Did not disappoint. We had whites and reds. Best part was we got 2 extra wines to taste for free! Bought a bottle to consume with friends later in the week at a braai! Fabulous job done giving us tasting notes and telling us about the winery and wines. Great price points on recommended wines!

Four of us dropped in at Neil Ellis towards the end of the day of wine tasting, around 3:30pm. We didn't receive a very warm welcome as the staff seemed tired and uninterested. We partook in the wine tasting while we waited for our cheese platter.

The cheese platter was simple and sufficient although I would have liked to have another variety of preserve instead of just the one orange preserve provided, I myself didn't particularly enjoy it, and would suggest a variety if possible. Otherwise it was a sensible cheese platter. We did however ask for more bread as it wasn't proportionate to the quantity of cheese, and the response we received from the lady we who served us was " well, you should have ordered 2 platters." Not an ideal response, but eventually she did manage to provide it to us at no extra cost as expected.

There is a decent variety of wine, we particularly enjoyed the reds, however as an "experience" it lacked in smiles and personality.

This wonderful lady who works at this winery and helps with tastings is simply amazing: fantastic knowledge, great communication, fun to be around. We arrived late in the day but Tessa had so much warmth, she stayed after hours for us, sharing her passion for wine and her country, South Africa.

Ultra modern facility for wine tasting. Tasted their top wines but unfortunately the experience is diminished by the sterile, commercial environment. Staff just about went through the motions. Won’t be going back.

Very disappointing wine tasting.
Staff was not interested at all.
Advertised wines that we came to taste especially, sold out. New vintage not available for tasting.
Wines in general very lacking compared to past vintages. Resting on their laurels me thinks... this winery will not be seeing me for many a year to come.

Best thing about this wine tasting was the indoor space in the modern tasting room and it's great outlook. Wine was pretty good too but the service not as good as other wineries I've visited. Just felt a bit rushed and less memorable than experiences elsewhere. Good value though - R25 for 5 wines.

Dear Linkside12, Thank you very much for your review and kind words regarding the interior of the tasting room. Your tasting experience is not in keeping with the high standards we have set ourselves over a long period of time, and therefore appreciate your feedback. Many thanks, Margot Ellis
