Great option for non wine drinkers
Pleasant gardens. Good tasting experience in a nice setting although the server was rather pushy in suggesting we buy wine. Special mention for the fact that for kids/non drinkers you can do a grape juice tasting, a nice touch.

    Nice Spot
Did a lot of research as to which winery to do a picnic at. This one had great reviews. The food was good but felt that a winery picnic should include wine. We bought a bottle separately but felt we would have happily paid a bit more if it just included it. It would also be nice if the picnic areas were a bit more secluded or picturesque.

    SPIER IS A WINNER!
Wow!!! Greeted by well trained staff, took the whole experience to another level...the Cuisine,Flavours of the food, presentation etc was excellent. So much to see and do at the wine farm. Beautiful manacured gardens enjoyed by families having picnics on the lush green lawns. The artisan ice cream stand was a 🏆 winner . Shops Galore for great gifts. Don't miss the interactive singing stones, what a pleasant surprise. I'll be back for the delicious "saltlick"& wine 🍷 tasting on my Next visit... can't wait.

Sad it’s not 5 stars this time.
Wine tasting experience set up so well. Beautiful surroundings. Lovely tables set. Very well thought through wine tasting packages. Platters delicious. Well educated, courteous and knowledgeable wine sommelier / server who served us. A credit to Spier for hiring this lovely young man. Everything I expect from Spier with 20 years of visiting. However too many greeters & managers & behind the counter people (supervising, monitoring and administering) and not enough servers “doing” the table tastings & serving meant the chap was looking after too many tables outside and inside at the same time. Ourselves and another one table had building frustrations. Sorry Spier not the best I expect from your brand.

    Exquisite!!!
Amazing experience on the Segway tour led by King and well explained how everything works by his colleague Eric. I highly recommend this activity as well as the wine estate it self. It's a lovely place to go and have a picnic day with friend and family.

We stopped for wine tasting on a Saturday morning to find a waiting list of 2 hours, so we opted to have a food platter and bottle of wine on the patio instead. Service was extremely slow and took about 30min for someone to attend to us. Beautiful setting but too busy, too conmercialised for what seemed to be average wine based on what we could enjoy with our platter. A visit in the week may be a better option if you want to avoid crowds. Understand that we still in Covid times and things are not normal yet and must say that Spier was one of only couple farms that offered wine tasting and restaurant options on a weekend so could also be what contributed to the crowds. Would recommend a visit but just plan around it.

I love Spier! It is beautiful, the accommodation is extremely good (and very reasonably priced), there is plenty of good places to eat, their wine is some of my favourite! We had the best experince at reception, having mistakenly booked the wrong date, and everyone could not have been more helpful. Dinner at Vadas was excellent, as was lunch at the Farm Cafe. The art dispalys thoughout the grounds are worth exploring, the singing stones have to be experienced to be believed and the light exhibition that was a stunning way to spend an evening. I can't recommend Spier more highly.

Wine tasting was incredible! The food at the restaurant was really disappointing, we had the pulled pork pizza which was not worth the R180 it cost. The service was also like pulling teeth... I would recommended only the wine tasting at this farm.

A few hics early on in our stay but they were resolved quickly and efficiently. The rooms upstairs seem brighter than the garden room with terrace so if you can negotiate steps would certainly recommend you book those rooms. The beds were very comfortable and beautiful bedding. The towels were of high quality too. The bathrooms were slightly dated but clean and functional. Spier have and excellent recycling policy including saving as much grey water as possible. The restaurant served beautiful food with very friendly staff. The service time was a bit on the slow side at dinner but the kitchen were working full on. The restaurant areas had a lovely ambience so waiting was not an issue for us. The inexpensive delicious Spier wine went down well with the food. Lots of activities available of which we had a beautiful full body massage the Spa was efficiently run and very inviting. Pool area was lovely although we didn’t use it. The Front Desk were helpful as were all the golf buggy drivers who so happily transported you around the vast site.
At the moment massive road construction is going on outside the perimeter and Spier management have taken the opportunity to improve access etc. although it didn’t look particularly nice it certainly didn’t have any impact on our stay. As is the case we often have a holiday favourite member of staff and this time it was Pumlani who was our waiter. Although kept busy he was able to share with us some African culture. The whole reason of travelling for us is experiencing the way life is for local people.
All in all a beautiful place to stay and wouldn’t hesitate to return!

My wife and I are in the Winelands for a breakaway. We visited the restaurant at Spier Hotel for a late lunch, intending to while away the afternoon with a lovely lunch and some good wine. The wine was good; the meal, way below par for an establishing of Spier's standing. I ordered the steak, which I assume was a sirloin because the menu just stated "beef". It was chewy, tasteless and served with a few burnt pieces of butternut and roasted tomatoes. No starch! And the menu didn't even state that patrons had to order their starch separately. I just couldn't bring myself to eat that steak which was way overpriced. Fortunately, Bridgette, the hostess on duty, noted my distress and relieved me of the most awful steak I've ever been presented with. For an establishment of its fine standing, the Spier Hotel was an utter disappointment, and sadly, this was not the first time we've left there unhappy. My wife, a vegan, ordered a vegetable curry which was served to her sans rice. Now who on earth eats curry without rice. It seems the hotel should close down the restaurant and focus on the many patrons who were there for drinks only. Perhaps they knew something I didn't.

Unfortunately the night before we were due to arrive at Spier, SA was moved to restricted Level 4 lockdown.. which meant no restaurant dining, no onsite consumption, or the sale of alcohol was permitted – our dreams of wine tasting, soup and wine pairing, wine by the fire place, Spier’s gourmet dining plus the wine gum tasting for my little one were all going to be just that – a dream!
AND the Cape had been hit by a massive storm so it was pouring with rain!

Nevertheless we made the most of our special time at Spier and what better place to be in lockdown than in a beautiful, large, comfortable Spier room, with a warm & comforting fire place, big windows to let the light (not sunlight mind you) shine in!
My daughter loved the kids club and baked us some yummy cookies!
The staff were amazing, up beat, positive and eager to help in any way, with a large smile!
The in-room dining was done in style and I commend them on transporting fabulous food, in the rain, still intact!
We also enjoyed our rainy golf cart adventure ride to the Bird encounter – what a fabulous experience.. a definite must.

Thoroughly delightful afternoon spent at Spier. Started off with some of the self guided walks (part of river and heritage walks). A wonderful way to learn about the indigenous plants while learning a bit of history about Spier, which is one of South Africas oldest wine farms.

We headed for the wine tasting in a beautiful open space with a unique wine bottle chandelier. They had a range of tasting packages starting at R40 which fitted our groups varying tastes and wallets. The afternoon was finished off at the cafe where we had a lovely lunch with generous serving sizes. It was a pleasant visit - you do need to book and while we were adults only in our group, I can see how you could keep non alcohol drinkers and kids entertained on the estate.

The picnic couldn't be much nicer and enough food to give you cardiac arrest. Grounds are stunning and everything is immaculately maintained. We had an unrealistic expectation of the wine tasting, in a cellar, being talked to by one of the team, whereas it is actually sitting in a very nice restaurant setting being given half a dozen wines to try with a quick chat through which grapes are in each wine. All very pleasant, staff were good and knowledgeable but the picnic was the star

If you a looking for a place to hangout, walk around in beautiful paths surrounded by nature, go to Spier. They have some trails inside to walk around, a beautiful lake and a lot of places to have a picnic. And good news: you don't have to book in advance to have a picnic. You can rent in the shop the glasses, towel and basket and choose what you want to eat. We chose bread, butter, cheese, salami, wine and amarula fondant and paid 240 rands.

The picnic works out well. Everyone chooses their own food and heads out to the beautiful gardens to find a shady spot. Information about how it all works was not readily available and we asked guests about where to collect blankets etc. The teenagers loved the Segways while the adults lay on the blankets under the trees. The picnic food was good but we missed things like mustard and fruit as accompaniments. The craft market was also enjoyed by all and we found some affordable little nick-nacks to buy. A lovely day out!
