Stellenbosch is a picturesque town with many beautiful historical Cape houses. The Village Museum comprising 4 separate restored period houses gives an interesting insight into the history of both the architecture and past life of the town and we loved that it was set in actual houses rather than remote items brought together in the usual curated museum environment. The... More

Moderately interesting but could be greatly improved with more information boards and better signage.

Unscheduled visit to this museum in the heart of Stellenbosch, unpretentious and honest. Interesting history of the area as told by artefacts, furniture and volunteers dressed in appropriate historical dress. Would recommend in order to understand its history and place.

A great way to enjoy some visual history...from the contemporarily dressed hostess' (always smiling, informing and happy to be photographed in their period costumes) to the authentically period furnished houses...dating from the oldest house on a street corner in South Africa (1709) till the late 1800's - 4 houses that show you how they lived in those times. A relaxing... More

This was exactly our cup of tea. No gadgets or gizmos, just a lovely series of places we could wander around and enjoy in our own time. In essence its Stellenbosch through the ages. I don't think it would be for kids - they would probably get bored too easily but if you enjoy spending an hour to an hour... More

I have visited the museum each year, together with overseas guests. It is a step back in time, and also slowing a pace down. In each house, there is a hostess explaining how people lived, the tools used and their customs. They do an excellent job!

This museum consists of a network of period properties (from the 1600s to the 1900s) done out in contemporary furniture and other historical items. It makes for a very pleasant hour or so exploring the various rooms and displays. There is undoubtedly a lot more that could be done with the place, but it is still a great place to... More

See lots of things from the old life in Stellenbosch and Cape Town. Clean, quite and private. Beautiful wooden pieces.

Most visitors to Stellenbosch are in the area to focus on the vineyards but here you can see 4 period homes that have been beautifully restored and furnished together with gardens (both vegetable and flowering) that show what produce was probably growing when the properties were first built. Stellenbosch dates back to its foundation by the Governor Simon van der... More

We enjoyed going through the 4 houses which comprise the Village Museum. The ladies in attendance in period costume were interesting and we enjoyed seeing how the middle class have lived over the past few hundred years in Stellenbosch. Learning about slavery in the Cape was also interesting
