This is a brilliant local museum. It has wonderful sets and lots of original material. Who could believe the extraordinary money in fashion feathers. There is a sense of faded glory in the town and this museum explains it all. Well worth a visit. This picture sums up the opulence!

Interesting collection, every room covers a different topic, liked the historic vehicles and the music instruments, a synagog is also part of the museum

The CP Nel museum provides a lot of insight into life during the golden age of ostrich farming. Each room is dedicated to a certain aspect of life in Oudtshoorn, from the ostriches themselves, to stores, clothing, recreation and so forth. I personally enjoyed the clothing display, imagining how one could wear so much during a Karoo summer! I also particularly enjoyed the old cars that were on display. This is definitely a must-visit if one is interested in history.

This is very easy to miss or give a miss. But don't!!! It is worth spending a happy one to two hours here. A huge collection of memorabilia from Oudtshoorn. Also a history of the area plus it includes the original old synagogue relocated into a wing of this museum. The old museum building itself is worth the visit. Definitely worth a visit.

This unpretentious little museum depicts the role of the ostrich trade in Oudtshoorn as well as the cultural history and lifestyle of the people of the Little Karoo during the Victorian era and early 20th century.
It is a bit dusty and sleepy but it is nevertheless quite interesting.
It also covers the little known episode of the 500 Polish refugee children welcomed in Oudtshoorn in the 1940s.
It really touches many aspects of Oudtshoorn history.
Highly recommended!

My husband's father grew up in Oudtshoorn and we just happened upon this museum while having lunch nearby. Upon seeing that it used to be a boy's school we realized my father in law would have gone to school there. A lady working in the museum was very helpful in going through the records to find any mention of my father in law, and was successful in finding a newspaper article written about him when he was the youngest person taken on by Rembrandt Tobacco as an apprentice. (he went on to have his entire career with them - later it became Rothmans)
As well as being full of fascinating artifacts - the story of the Polish children being one of the most interesting, it was really meaningful to my husband to be shown parts of the old school where his father spent some very happy years.

During the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (annualy Afrikaans-cultural festival) I spent hours in this museum. Every time I went in, I discoverd new things about the Oudtshoorn history. It's really worth it visiting this museum.

The staff was friendly upon our arrival and when asked a question or two, were willing to share what they know about the many pieces inside the museum.
