This 75 km historic road was completed in 1883. Rivers generally flow in deep gorges on their way from the mountains to the sea, therefore there are seven passes along the way, hence the name of the route. These are the passes crossing the Swart-, Kaaimans- and Silver-, Touw-, Hoogekraal- and Karatara rivers, the Homtini gorge and the Phantom pass. After a nice couple of days in Knysna and surrounds the pain of the drive back home was eased by travelling the backroads... Lovely scenery on a cloudy day with minimal traffic allowed frequent photo stops and opportunities for appreciating nature at its best. Roads...More

We took a drive along the 7 passes road last week. It is a beautiful dust road to enjoy slowly. Many stunning views and interesting little spots to stop and explore

We took the 7 passes road after the fire and were grateful to see that the majority of the natural forest was unaffected by the devastating fire

Make sure you have time to drive along slowly so you can take in all the beautiful scenery. Mountains as a backdrop, and beautiful views. Take a picnic to enjoy at the side of the road

We drove to George via the Toll Road and then looked for the 7 Passes route to get back to Knysna. Unfortunately no-one in the town could point us in the right direction. Luckily I had Google Maps and it got us on the route....More

Driving over the old bridges at the bottom of the passes was truely something to see. The road is drivable in a normal car but would be better in a vehicle with a bit of ground clearance.

Magnificent scenery at all the different passes .Not roads to drive fast on - take your time on these old winding roads, imagine how people in the past travelled along here. A lovely slow road trip where you might spot some baboons sunbathing. Drive with...More

I have cycled this route before. Today we took a leisurely drive. The scenery and the passes are gorgeous. A welcome change from the high speed N2.

Hi there you won't enjoy with a small car because it a bit rough road and winding best in a 4x4 or utility vehicle
