This was an interesting and humbling tour. The bus trip around the island is interesting and our tour guide gave us lots of interesting facts about the island and its history. Look out for all the wildlife, in particular all the turtles, we even found a penguin. The tour of the prison with an ex inmate gives a real insight into what it was like. Our tour guide was willing to answer any questions and was very open about his experience as an inmate. Definitely add this to your Cape Town itinerary.

Really enjoyed our tour of Robben Island today. We had pre booked our tickets which made the process really simple. Every single member of staff we encountered were so friendly. The tour guide (an ex inmate) was very insightful and more than willing to answer any questions we had. The bus driver and tour guide on the bus were also so friendly and shared a wealth of knowldge. Beautiful views from the island and even got to see some penguins and turtles. A must do when in cape town

My recommendation for joining this tour is to do it yourself, I don't think you need a tour operator. Its very simple to get to the museum and purchase tickets yourself this also gives you the opportunity to go when the weather is good. If its raining, it seems they cancel the boat that day.
Remember to have some form of ID on you. We forgot our passports, but luckily I had some digital ID with me which they accepted.
Boat ride I approx 1 hr.
When you get there there's a 45 min bus tour with a knowledgable guide.
Then you have the prison tour with an ex in-mate. I agree that it is humbling to have an ex in-mate take you around, but we felt there was something missing from the tour. There are areas which have literature in them to read, but these are skipped out and it all felt a little rushed to get us back on the boat such that we didn't have time to look at it all. Would have been nice to have some free time to wander around the cells etc.
If you have 4 hours spare for nothing else and it's a nice day, I would recommend coming.

This was a very historic and amazing experience. It was humbling to have past prisoners take you on the tour. This is definitely an important place to visit during a visit to Cape Town.

Great experience. Everytime when I went to South Africa (2014, 2016, 2019,) I wanted to do the Robben Island tour but it was closed because of the weather condition at sea. I finally got to tour Robben Island and it was the best opportunity I have ever gotten. Just the history of the Island alone and learning how some inmates died escaping. The cost from what I remember is around R400 for non South African citizen. The boat ride to the island is about 30 minutes. While you are on the boat, there is a short video about the Island history and of Nelson Mandela. Once you get to the island, you walked towards the tour buses. The bus tour is about 30 minutes or so and the guide will give you a brief history of the Island history. There is a small break about 15 to 20 minutes, the bus will stop at this Cafe. You can use the restroom, grab a snack, coffee, drink, etc. There is a place outside where you can take pictures, I will include this in my photos so you know what it looks like. After the bus tour, it is the tour of the prison itself. You will see how the prisoners live, get a brief history of the prison operation, Nelson Mandela, and his cell.

This is a must do for everyone I think. The experience and rich history we received at Robben Ireland was inveluable. Our prison guide was a Robben Ireland detainee who spent 10 years Mr Itumeleng. He shared the history and his experience with a passion, giving is time for questions and pictures and videos it was indeed great. When done Thabo took us a tour of the whole Ireland by bus where he explained various land marks and history of various like Sobukwe house the kgwari etc. Thabo was also very passionate about explaining the various landmarks. The only draw back was a checking experience at VnA water front where security just dismissed everyone and told them to come at half pass when we have tickets that said 10h15. He didn't explain and we were all confused. Also directions to the ticket or meeting point at VnA are poor and had to ask various people to get there which is not great. All was world class once checked it all the way to the ferry to Ireland perfect.

This is not a museum with tour guides, this is an amazing piece of history and you are guided through a personal tour from an ex inmate. It’s an incredible experience, I was gripped by the reality of the experience being shared by Derrick. There is so much more to this museum than cell 4.
Well worth the 5 stars.
