Well, I always wanted to do a long distance train trip and the Shosholoza Meyl scratched that particular itch. The staff is mostly friendly if you engage them, but it some of them seem very disinterested. At the end of the day you do this to enjoy something different. If you want luxury, rather do Premier class. Aircon didn't always... More

What a disappointment! Our train was delayed from Johannesburg to Cape Town with 5 hours and the same back. There was a heatwave and the air-conditioning wasn't working. Even though the train was delayed the kitchen still closed early with no access to water. This was extremely disappointing!!!

Traveled on Shosholozu Meryl - CapeTown to Johannesburg, anticipated time of arrival 11:25 the next morning. Oh boy! First, arrived at the train station and showed my voucher as I was traveling in a sleeper overnight, not one soul directed me to the right area, until I insisted that I paid a lot for this trip! Room assigned was reasonable... More

I would like to share with you the wonderful train experience in South Africa. I agree with the view point of previous reviews, which stated that this train journey is a beautiful jewel that is not known by many people. When you take a train trip you get to your holiday destination refreshed after a nights rest. You arrive there... More

A great way to see South Africa. The scenery was wonderful, especially sunset. The cabin was not very clean. our sink did not drain. The bathrooms do not have soap. Food in the train was decent. Our train ride from Cape Town to Joburg was over 28 hrs long. It gets cold at night during the winter and there is... More

Pe to joberg to treat the kids on a train ride, Too long I'm afraid we were delayed 4 hours. Service was good, cleanliness not on standard at all. Toilets blocked and filthy, no warm water in showers, we cleaned out our cabin with dettol. Booked return tickets but will fly back for sure. Its a shame as a few... More

Platform not clearly marked at departure point and staff not very organized. One definitely does not get your moneys worth. To embark is a nightmare as "pergatory" looms between the platform and the train. First impressions were of an unwashed exterior. The swingback door when carrying luggage is traumatic. Not enough ladders for the 4 sleepers (potentially dangerous for seniors... More

Caught the overnight train from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Great experience and good break from planes. Rented our own tourist class cabin which was surprisingly comfortable. Wouldn't want a longer journey though and still had to use the communal facilities. Opted to hire bedding (instead of using our sleeping bags). Our beds were made up for us by the porter... More

The food is absolutely atrocious. Worst food experience. Yes the trip is rather good and relaxing in some instances, but a lot of stops. TV does not work in the gathering lounge. Cant even connect your laptop to their mains - no power. Rather take your own food for the 27-28 hour train ride. Food rating is approximately one (1)... More
