the Garden route is beautiful and scenic, take if you have time to drive slowly and enjoy the ride. The ultimate is from Durban to Cape Town, stop over at the small towns along the way

I would highly recommend a self-drive, especially that you can rent a car for $20USD per day. We did it in the end of July and had a great time and decent weather.
