One really nice attraction in Pietermaritzburg is the Voortrekker Museum and the Church of the Vow which showcases life in the Natal region from the Neolithic and Colonial Eras up until the time of Aparthied and its eventual abolition, and what is now the modern day Natal. Exhibits in the main museum are very well curated, cared for and researched.... More

Displays were good but disappointed that most of the museum is about apartheid and not the voortrekkers English and the zulus

Reasonable interesting. Staff very unhelpful and seemingly not interested in visitors. The history, while interesting seemed very disjointed and there was no flow to the tour. The museum could do with a bit more light and more frequent dusting

Now known as the Msunduzi Voortrekker Museum, this venue is an excellent example of the transformation history of South Africa. For the majority of South Africans, the Voortrekker Museum had many negative connotations, although reflecting the cultural history of a small group of people in the country. This piece of history is retained but its integration with the rich cultural... More

The Voortrekkers ( Pioneers of their day ) whose wagons pulled into Zulu territory, were not welcome guests in their time, this museum really tells the story about how South Africa started its modern history. it consists of building containing an original wagon and other artefacts of the period. It also consists of the first Voortrekker church, Part of the... More

If you have the time - go and visit this museum. As a local, I first went when I took a friend from abroad, who really like history - it was quite an eye-opener for me - and more interesting than I anticipated! I learned a lot about my city, and my country! Do visit, if you haven't been before.

We enjoyed the museum very much. One of the museums in Pietermaritzburg actually worth visiting. Interesting to understand the complex social history of the city.
