Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Enjoyed my walk along the Durban beachfront - it is a long promenade— some 7 kilometres from the Blue Lagoon to Point Beaches. Only negative is that you do get hustled by a few beggars along the way - you have to tell them very firmly No then they leave you alone. The promenade is cleaned every morning and law enforcement is present every 2 kilometres or so.

What a great way to spend time excersing, whether it be walking, running, skating, cycling.... for all ages. Well organised and controlled by differing enforcements, with regards security etc. Toilets seems well looked after...

The new promonade is also a welcome addition and creates a larger area.
Enjoy the outdoors

Recently spent a short time (intended to stay longer but not much to do/see) on the Golden Mile.
Beach looks nice and not over-populated.
HOWEVER we were advised by a number of shop-keepers not to wander into the back streets off the Golden Mile as it was unsafe to do so.
This was mid-afternoon!!!!

Didn't see much in the way of restaurants etc so would check carefully before booking accommodation here. There are better places in Durban.

This long stretch of sandy beach and esplanade look very appealing. There are good walking paths, some food vendors, a long expanse of sand with a couple of patrolled sections and some stalls selling surf gear, clothing and general tourist curios. But although we didn’t see any problems we were advised to be cautious.

It is possible to easily walk from Suncoast Casino, past Durban Main beaches, past Ushaka Marine World onto North Beach walk, right up to the Harbour entrance. (Saw a cruise ship entering harbour) Very clean walk. Security Guards visible along along. Many restuarants and bars along the way.

The most beautiful breathtaking coast Durbanites can be Proud of.
The view as one strolls down the Golden Mile is breathtaking.
The joys of being one with the Ocean. Either you walk on the Beach or take a romantic stroll with a Loved One on the promenade - its a joy. Plenty of eatery along the way catering for every palette. A place to get the kids off the Couch and spend some over due family time. Swim, surf , walk, go fishing, just sit on the beach - there is something for everyone to do.
New promenade is your go to place for 2020.

The Golden Mile is a great promenade to walk on. If you're lucky you'll see magnificent sand art, made by one of the local people. However, you need to be vigilant as there are opportunists around who may become interested in your handbag, etc. There is, however, constant patrolling taking place.

What a shame a beautiful setting like the golden mile is used by so many beggers and junkies.

The place its self is nice although if your not a beach person there isn't a lot of other things to do, but me and partner tried to enjoy walking along the promenade only to be accosted by drug user after drug user asking for money. They started off polite during the early part of the day but, as the sun was about to set that all changed.

My partner and I were walking to the local supermarket when approached by yet another drug user, he started off telling us what a nice person he is and only want half a loaf of bread, but he became very abusive when we explained we did not have any money to give. He started swearing and shouting homophobic abuse at us and the it became scary, we were not sure if anyone would help if it turned violent, but he backed off when my partner turned on him and threaten him. The homophobic abuse continued as we walked away.

This did not happen after dark it was in fact only 445pm. The hotel we are staying in is right on the mile and they advise not going out after dark, I can see why. We had just been in Cape Town, a place we were told was more dangerous for tourist, but we felt 100% safe there with tourist police on almost every corner. Here on the Golden mile the only police we saw were asking us questions to do with a radio contest.

There are loads of people here that are enjoying themselves and the beggers seem to leave them alone, they target tourist. And it is not the poorer black population, they have all been friendly and polite, it is the drug using white afrikaans people and they are aggressive.

My advice to anyone travelling to Durban is DON'T, if you must come here stay in your hotel.

Avoid this area like the plague . Park car walk down to beach put feet in water come back car broken into . What was once golden has lost it's shine to petty thieving wastrols and there are far more pleasant places to go than this area . If you want crime this is the place to visit . If not avoid at all costs .

There are a string of 3-, 4-, & 5- star hotels and self-catering apartments along the entire Durban coastline. However, it's best to settle for those along the North beach area rather than the South beach area.
Nightlife tends to be dependent on one's tastes and preferences, for instance, nightclubs are usually frequented by young adults (betw. ages 18 to 25); casinos by those in age group (30+ to 60+).
One can actually swim and surf at almost any point along the stretch of beach (rather than find the seas unihabitable)..
