Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The park is adjacent to the Blue Crane restaurant and worth a visit if you love birds. Many species resident at the park, including Blue Cranes, which are quite tame. Spend time in the bird watching hide as well when there.

I live near the Bird Sanctuary and often pass it. I feel quite sad when I do! It is in a terrible state I think. Unkempt, neglected in my opinion and very seldom do I see the buck that reside there. Bird life ok, not amazing. I did complain about the condition of the park and was told that it was not bad and that there were always 6 staff working there. I have never seen more than 1 or 2 and often none! The water in the main dam is clogged with weeds or whatever and I just feel sorry for the buck!
Used to be so lovely, but, sadly, not anymore. Needs attention!!

If you want to see a whole range of birds in a park, this is the place. Some covered walkways let you walk out over the ponds to get close to the birds. We must have seen over 20 species of birds, including the Blue Crane,Crowned Crane and Egyptian Goose.

I read a lot about this bird sanctuary and decided to visit it. What a disappointment it turned out to be. There is really nothing to see but a few ducks in the water. I really don't have anything positive to say about it.

My husband and I had the absolute pleasure of having a lazy lunch at Blue Crane Restaurant in June (see my review).
The Austen Roberts Bird sanctuary is right next to Blue Crane. It was a magnificent and special experience to see the Blue Cranes walking up and down right outside the window while having a wonderful meal.
After a lazy lunch we took a relaxing and romantic stroll on the boardwalk. At the end of the boardwalk is a lookout point where you can sit and enjoy the birdlife. There is a small information room which was also quite interesting.
Like previous reviews mentioned, entrance is free, but when you sign the visitor’s book you are welcome to make a donation.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stroll through the Sanctuary. It was marvelous to experience such peace and tranquility right in the city!

The Austin Roberts bird hide has so much potential. There are a variety of beautiful birds yet but the development lacks imagination and even looks a bit dated. Large areas are off-limits for us as well.
Common-on guys, please develop this potentially tranquil hide!

I had breakfast by the lake while cranes were walking just in front of me. Its really nice to see all these birds while drinking a coffee. The service was a bit slow though.

Wow! Just Wow! My kids enjoyed the information and seeing the birds so close up. Wide variety of birds are around especially on the island. Very safe and secure environment.

Worth it - take your little ones and teach them about nature and birds. It is beautiful! It is a good place to birdwatch and it is convenient to get to. The staff were friendly and helpful in identifiying a couple of birds on the feeders that I had never seen before. It's a nice retreat after a day of shopping and sightseeing. Thumbs up! :)

Good food in bird sanctuary. The bird sanctuary and accompanying Blue Crane restaurant is very peaceful, although menu is average. The sanctuary, restaurant and adjoining park are. extremely Child friendly

To actually go inside the sanctuary and walk around: R55 per person up to 12 people per group.
To just watch from a bird-hide or from the Restaurant is free.
However, as per the review, the Restaurant makes up for that with exorbitant prices.
