Under construction limited art on display
Feb. 2020 • Couples
Beautiful building in a very poor neighborhood. Security everywhere even inside the gate. It’s free but not much is on display. We didn’t have cellphones and they didn’t have WiFi, so a worker left and found us a metered taxi. The taxis was fixed rate not metered but we were happy to get out of the Newtown neighborhood.

Beautiful collections, sad building
Jan. 2020
Unfortunately the building is in disrepair and it is located in a dangerous area in terms of crime and traffic. However, there are some beautiful collections there.

Disappointing visit - amazed at the decline
Jan. 2020
JAG is a shadow of its former self. If you read the Wikipedia article on JAG, and compare that with current reality, you simply cannot believe the extent of the decline at JAG

Disappointing visit to Johannesburg Art Gallery
Jan. 2020
JAG was billed as the largest collection of African art on the continent. After a recent visit I find that very hard to believe.

The gallery offers free admission, but only two other visitors were there on the Sunday that I visited. The store was closed, several parts of the gallery were shut down, and the place felt that it was not well maintained.

The permanent collection is rather meagre. A special exhibition on Art and Cosmology (pretentious title) consisted mostly of photographs showing very devout South Africans praying, dancing and such - they were very interesting.

The Gallery is In the Central Business District, where I was warned to not walk around, even during the day. My Uber passed by a really interesting-looking crafts and food fair in Joubert Park, but I was told not to go.

A cultural activity
Oct. 2018
I don’t remember the price but I do remember spending just a couple of hours there. It’s not something remarkable and it is in a dangerous neighbourhood. But i think it is always interesting to visit places that promote culture

A very sad and neglected gallery.
Sep. 2018
Such a shame. Beautiful building. Was expecting to see art. Only a Tilson photography collection. Do not go on Sunday as cafe and shop closed.

Doesn't live up to the hype
Jun. 2018 • Solo
I read that this is the largest gallery on the sub-continent. I hope not, because it took 30 minutes to see the entire space. The upper floors are closed off, and part of the main floor is closed for painting, etc. Most of the displays were contemporary, with only two rooms dedicated to some un-dated artifacts from the Kwana-Natal area.

Johannesburg ART Gallery-Wsted Oasis
Aug. 2017
such beautiful , rare art work in a lovely setting. Huge neglect, several potential opportunities to use and enhance this venue have been bypassed. Seems as though nobody is interested in curating this place anymore.THe surrounding area has also become difficult to access and the City of Joburg does not seem to have invested in reversing this situation.
