We were in town and decided to visit the Fort since it's a piece of South Africa history. But has we arrived we saw a desert fort, with no dynamic. Fortunately there were 2 tourist ambassadors that gave us some highlights on the fort structure and what was it all about. It seemed desert and lonely, it really needs someone... More

Visited this fort, but unfortunately closed when we visited middle of the day. Impressive location with a great view over the town and docks. Looked well maintained from the outside.

We arrived 10 minutes after closing time of 3.30 but seems odd for it to be locked up. It is an old fort from which nothing has ever been fired which is a good thing!

There are lovely views from the fort, which itself is quite small. We went on a Sunday and found it was closed on weekends. Previous reviews have said about litter and homeless people being there, but this certainly wasn't the case when we visited - the area was very clean and the grounds around the fort clean and tidy, and... Not much to it. Nice view, and the fort still relatively in good condition. Worth a once off quick visit. There was a security guard at the entrance, so did not feel unsafe, area was clean and tidy. What is lacking, it has so much potential to do/be more. Glad I have been and seen this piece of history though.

Although the grounds of this fort were free of litter, we were horrified to see that the amount of litter and broken glass in the central prison structure at the fort. The fort dates back to 1799 and was built to prevent French troops from invading. The fort was named after Frederick, Duke of York. The fort overlooks the bay... More

The last time I visited the fort, I was intimidated by the huge number of homeless who had "colonized" the area. What a wonderful surprise to find that new security is in place, and a huge clean-up has occurred, making it, once again, a visitor-friendly place. It is easy to find - just carry on along Belmont Terrace and its... More

Well worth a visit, its completely free and perfect for day or night. Generally well lit at night. Perfect harbour panoramas and lovely historical significance. Be wary in the general neighbourhood and dont walk around with visible valuables.
