About
A popular tourist stop, this jail slid 225 feet downhill during a "land slippage" caused by the many mining shafts in the area.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We spent a good part of the day exploring all around Jerome. It's a quaint town with lots of little shops. We walked to the sliding jail and yes it is sliding. When in Jerome you do have to see this.

4 because it is free.
Grab some brews then come by to see the jail.
Quite an interesting slide, 200+ feet.
Parking will be an issue but there are a couple of slots right in front.
Great place for pics.
Weekends are quite busy in Jerone.
Interesting stop.

The story behind this sliding jail was interesting and funny. Apparently there was a giant explosion that blew up half the town and the jail landed in the middle of the road. It stayed there for years then the hippies came to town on 1960 an decided to promote Jerome s a tourist attraction and said they had to get that jail building out of the road. They pulled the jail with a truck and it slid only 6 feet, so they tried again, again it slid 6 feet, the third time it slid 6 feet so they decided to go think about this, of course in a bar drinking, thinking and drinking I guess don't mix, so they decided to leave the jail on the side of the road and put up a plaque describing it as the sliding jail. Really It is a cement broken down old jail Half missing walls. Don't go out of your way to see this.

The historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona, is located on a steep hill--perhaps a little too steep. Incorporated in 1898, with a reputation for boozing, brawling and brotheling that earned the title of "Wickedest Town in America," it featured a sturdy jailhouse with a concrete cell block that was strong enough to hold the rowdiest of gamblers and gunfighters. Today, however, the wood and tin building isn't quite where its builder left it. In the 1930s, dynamite explosions from copper miners caused the jail to slide off its foundation 225 feet into the middle of one of the town's main streets. The road was altered to go around it. Now it is located on the east side of Hull Avenue, near the intersection with Diaz Street, down the hill from the parking area for the Jerome Visitors Center. But town officials predict that an unstable hillside will force the jail to side further downhill. For the time being, it has been stabilized with retaining walls and surrounded by an iron fence.

There were not signs pointing us to this unique find and if I had not researched ahead of time, we would have missed it, which would have been a shame. If you are visiting Jerome, you need to check it out.

It was pretty neat to see, but not anywhere to spend a lot of time. There were a few shops nearby, but I didn’t visit any of them.

It's a pretty much a small concrete building that's crumbling. A little hard to find. No signs to point it out until you get there. It's sort of down a hill next to a parking lot. Wasn't too impressed. Didn't even take a pic.

You go into the parking lot and there's the jail. It's cracked walls and propped up roof tell the tale. There's no other history signage. 5 minutes and your done.

Not really an attraction but part of Jerome's history. There are many historical buildings and facts about Jerome all around the town, you just have to look out for them. You should stop by the information booth that is across from the parking lot, right before you enter "downtown" Jerome. You can pick up a free map of the town but they gladly accept any donation you can give.

Take the Ghost City Tour. It was fun, entertaining and informational. You will be impressed. Then have a cold one in this spooky little town.
