We did the Surprise Glacier cruise just a couple weeks ago. We loved it, but our priority was seeing a glacier calve. We were fortunate that it did calve a few times. However, this is really the only glacier you see close up and you are probably there at the glacier for 15-20 minutes. I'm not sure a 4yr old could appreciate the beauty or even be quick enough to sight the falling ice which happens in an instant. On the cruise, we saw sea otters, sea lions, and lots of eagles. If you do opt for this cruise, be sure to go out with Major Marine as they have a park ranger on board and he did a magnificent job of interacting the young kids and even recruited them as helpers to carry around animal pelts. The kids obviously had a great time and it would probably enhance the experience for your 4yr old. We did the 3.5 hr cruise out of Resurrection Bay. We opted for the shorter cruise as we are prone to sea sickness. The water in the bay was relatively calm, but the boat rocks considerably more when stopped to view wildlife. We saw otters, sea lions, puffins, and mountain goats (tiny white specks without binoculars). We also saw 2 humpback whales which was awesome, but the captain noted that was unusual. Without them, I would have thought the cruise pointless as we'd already seen those animals on the PWS cruise. Maybe the longer cruises have more wildlife. You do see Bear Glacier, but it is from a considerable distance, not at all like PWS glaciers. If you aren't staying overnight in Seward, it would be a long drive roundtrip. Whatever cruise you pick, be sure to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center near Portage. Its amazing and totally awesome experience for 4yr old.
