This was a great experience going through this tunnel - since it is the only 'land' access way to get to Whitter. It is a shared passage withe the train - so you may have to wait your turn - but fun.

I love tunnels! This one tops my list of best that I've ever been in. Plus if you visit the local museum you can find out all the history of the engineering marvel of how the tunnel was constructed.

While inconvenient to only be able to go through at certain times of the day, the construction is fascinating.

Take the same tunnel used by trains to get to and from Whittier. We went there in mid-October and unfortunately it was rainy so long distance viewing of anything was limited. However, we did take the time while waiting for our turn to travel through...More

The history regarding this tunnel is very interesting. Look up on the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel website for the times that autos are allowed to go through the tunnel. They stay on schedule.

This is in itself worth the trip, an old railroad tunnel made accessible for cars, one way 2. 1/2 miles long.

My husband and I took the tunnel to drive from Anchorage to Girdwood. It is an 8 minute car ride to drive through the tunnel. The tunnel coordinators run a tight ship as they are very timely. So make sure that you arrive on time,...More

Why not? A driver you contract will take you anywhere you want to go, as long as you pay the toll. You pay the toll to get into the Whittier area, but not to leave. Are you going to Whittier or just driving through the... More

The tunnel opens at 6:00 a.m. leaving Whittier and every hour after that. They only allow so many through the tunnel to make sure it is clear for traffic coming into Whittier on every half hour. The toll to drive through... More

I just traveled through there and your motor home will have no problem. The train travels through this tunnel in between vehicles so there is plenty of room.
