This was highly recommended, which was why it was so disappointing to spend this kind of money on this experience. This was supposed to be the highlight of our Alaskan trip, and I 100% would have spent this money on something else. Advice to others to maybe have a better experience: Have a partner, don't get stuck in a kayak with the guide. Maybe do it earlier in the tourist season, not August, when the guides are more enthusiastic and less annoyed with the tourists. Research on your own if you want to learn more about the area, etc and don't hope that the guides will offer much information, or encourage any unique experiences while out there.

We had hiked and biked so time to use the arms and get out on the water. We called in the morning and picked up the last 2 reservations for a half day kayak starting at 1. The lady that checked us in was very pleasant and helpful. Our guides, Ian and Ryan were awesome. We were on the water from 2-5pm. It was a perfect blue sky day. They have waterproof boots if you want them - the water is very cold but the drips from the oars felt good on a warm 60 degree day. We saw waterfalls, a bald eagle, kittiwake rookery (bird haven between 2 waterfalls) and a few otters. The backdrop was stunning with the mountains and glaciers. The little town of Whittier was cute and fun to take the 2.5 mile single road tunnel to get there but check the schedule before heading out as it runs on the half hour.

We (two couples in our 60's with kayak experience) did the full day Blackstone Bay trip. Communication with Pete prior to the trip was easy and helpful and our guide, Ryan, did a great job! He was very friendly, polite and helpful with the kayaks and helping me over the rocks in our rock scramble hike at the end. He even brought back a water bottle we left to Girdwood as he knew he lived near where we were staying...so thoughtful! We got lucky with dry, clear weather, so we saw some amazing scenery. We also saw a marmot at our lunch spot and two bears from a distance towards the end of our trip. Definitely tired by the end of the day, but we all enjoyed it. Thanks so much Pete and Ryan.

We did the Blackstone bay tour and holy cow, did it show up!!! Incredible tour. The beauty really left us quite speechless. A once in a lifetime experience!! If you are adventurous and active, you will be able to do this tour! Definitely need a sense of adventure, love the outdoors, and be in decent shape and you will have a wonderful time! Anthony was our tour guide and he was awesome!!!! Don’t let the weather stop you from booking this tour. The weather in anchorage or Whittier might be one way but the weather in Blackstone bay may be different!! A little rain never hurt anyone! Wear layers and you will be fine!

I have been renting boats and coordinating muti day paddle trips with Pete for over 10 years. Everything has been great from the gear to undertanding best places to paddle and camp. Without Pete would be hard to come up to Alaska and do an epic paddle trip in PWS. Great guy!!! Please make note that Pete does not provide kayaker dropoff and pickup. A few companies are local and some are much more reputable than others. Call Pete to make sure you use the right dropoff and pickup service.

Four adults on this trip, all with some kayak experience, but this could easily be done with little to no kayaking, as the equipment, guides, safety concerns, route planning were all exceptional Natalie was our guide, and she was very experienced, knowledgeable, friendly . We did the Blackstone Bay trip out to the glaciers, -- what an incredible site! It was a 5 hour trip in total with about 4 hours on the water. I would rate this as a moderate exertion level . They suit you up with all boots, waders, jackets, pfd's , so you don't have to bring anything but yourself. They will provide water, snacks, but I suggest ;you bring your own water bottle to use while actually paddling. And bring your camera in a waterproof case-- great picture opportunities!
Highly recommend this trip! and going through the Whittier tunnel to get there is exciting! Hats off to Natalie-- great job!

What an amazing experience! My husband and I were looking for an active day trip in early August, and we were not disappointed! Marshall, our guide, took us to see the humpy salmon swim up a creek and then over to the largest black-footed kittiwake aviary in the world! We got to see the kittiwakes chase off a bald eagle. There were great views of glaciers too! Marshall was extremely knowledgeable of the area and the wildlife.

I loved that I didn’t have to pay until I got there as they were watching the weather to ensure a good day on the water.

The activity was not to rigorous, and we were warm and dry due to the rain gear provided at the shop. This is a good activity for beginners who want an active tour of one of the most beautiful places in Alaska!

Had done a lot of river and lake kayaking before, but nothing like this. We had four in our party and 12 total plus three guides. I wish I could remember their names, but they were all great. One guide was new and from Colorado, but he had tons of rafting experience and hung back to make sure the slower folks didn’t get separated. There was also a local guy that was very friendly named Marshall and a third guy in the red kayak who was the safety guy/naturalist among the group. This is a top rate operation—they totally hook you up from start to finish. Don’t wear jeans, but if you do, they will give you waders.

The safety guy kind of freaked us out at the beginning and did a detailed explanation of what to do WHEN we tip, but he did this so we all were paying attention though. At the end he said calmly, “I haven’t had anyone tip in 2 years. It usually happens when people are drinking or horsing around trying to stand up or tip intentional, so don’t do that and you’ll have a great day out there.”

Marshall then explained how to paddle and steer. Sea kayaks have pedals, which steer the boat. They were easy to learn and I sat in back and steered while my best friend sat in front. It didn’t take us long to get into a rhythm and it is a lot simpler to control direction with the rudder. Don’t press too hard—think driving pedals on a car.

They took us across the bay and we say some awesome glacial waterfalls and a large population of black-footed kittiwakes nesting in a giant communal rookery on the rocks. We also saw some bald eagles. About 2/3 of the way through the experience, we kayaked across to this beach and got out for a bit. This is the only bathroom stop during the trip and it is in nature, so pack in, pack out. We walked across this little beach and the naturalist pointed out some crabs and some flora as we hiked a short way to this cool waterfall. You are wearing rubber boots, so you can stand in a little pool off to the side and get a cool pic. He also gave us an opportunity to try some wild lettuce, which was awesome and something that would be great in a salad.

The trip in from there was pretty easy, as you have the current and take out at a different spot. We also got some waves on the way in, but by that point, you feel one with the boat and again, these kayaks are very stable and well maintained.

Some tips:

Bring a bottle of water and a snack. They have granola bars, candy, and water, and gave us some stuff about half way and on the island, but 5-6 miles of kayaking takes a lot of fuel. It was a moderate workout, so I would recommend for someone with low stamina. The owner and wife were also really cool and helped us at the beginning and at the end. I don’t have any advice for rainy days, b/c we got lucky. Again, these guys know their stuff and were VERY safe and respectful. One of the best things you can do if you are in the Girdwood/Whittier area. Highly recommended!

We had such an awesome day on the water with Alaska Sea Kayakers. Our tour guides were Calving and Natalie! They were awesome and geared our tour towards the people on it (Two different families with pre-teen/teen kids). I called and talked to Pete before we booked. He was excellent. I was worried we wouldn't do well since we had no kayaking experience and 3 kids. He was confident the tour would be suitable for all levels and he was right! We had a fantastic time! Highly recommend.
We are a family of 5. Kids are 16, 14, 11.

We did the full day Passage Canal kayak and it was definitely a highlight of our trip. Wayne is so knowledgeable. The pace of the trip was just right with lots of opportunities to stop and take pictures.
