Te Ana provides personalised, authentic Maori cultural experiences based around the rock art art sites created by our ancestors. We offer guided tours of our Maori Rock Art Centre, Te Ana, and guided tours to some of the districts most stunning examples of Maori rock drawings, also known as cave art. We are a Maori owned not-for-profit organisation - 100% of the proceeds of our centre and site tours are used for the management of the rock art sites in the district. By choosing Te Ana you are helping us to protect this unique aspect of our culture for future generations. Kia ora!

We had a wonderful, informative tour while visiting the Te Ana Maori Rock Art Centre. It was fantastic in that not only was our guide exceptionally knowledgeable, but that it was also a private tour (thanks to it being the off season), so we were able to ask lots of questions. We even enjoyed making our own rock art at... More

Interesting to see but there was obviously a lot of damage before it was realised how significant it was. Some also taken by museums. Still interesting but not a wow

Really enjoyed this visit and we had Wes share his rock art stories. An important place to visit to receive a perspective of early Maori history in our area. The sites are worth visiting too but expect faint drawings and you will not be disappointed.

Kia ora Flyingkiwis, Thanks for your positive feedback on the tour - much appreciated! A good point regarding the faintness of some of the drawings. Unlike other cultures, there was no practice of 'refreshing' (painting over) the drawings in Maori culture, so depending on the environment they are located in they can be faint - while others look as if... Amanda arranged for Susan to meet us. Susan took us through the archives at Timaru and then on out to the field where we spent another two hours hearing her wonderful stories and viewing the Maori Rock Art at the cave site. Excellent experience. Highly recommend the whole tour but if time is a problem then be sure to take... More

Kia ora Evelyn - thanks so much for your feedback on your guided tour of Te Ana Maori Rock Art Centre and the tour the amazing Opihi Taniwha rock art site. Its one thing viewing the rock art that we have at our cultural centre, quite another seeing it in the landscape in which it was created! Thanks for choosing... More

Thanks to Wes our Maori guide this was a really informative journey through Maori culture and art. You get a real sense of how the world looked through the eyes of the original NZ settlers.

A fantastic display of rock drawings done by early Maori around the area. The commentary was great a real asset for Timaru.

This was a great find! Never knew this existed in NZ before, was very interesting to learn about it, 3.5yo enjoyed the drawing table and interactive displays but the Haast's eagle not so much LOL, The area it is housed while not big is packed full of information and displays. A very good and Interactive museum on the Maori art and culture in the South Island NZ. Thanks to a guide who can answer all your questions, we managed to complete and comprehend our understanding of this indigenous New Zealand community. Worth every penny.

The Maori Rock Art exhibition is located within the I-site building. We planned to stay for about an hour and duly paid the necessary parking fee, but actually devoted three hours to this interesting and informative exhibition - we had to feed the parking meter twice more! For us the biggest single asset of this exhibition was Wes, the Maori... More
