The most exciting thing about this ancient culture street is the architecture and some of the decor. Otherwise it is pretty standard. It was a little out of the way and kind of dead.
The drum tower is nearby and the closest metro Gulou or Dongnanjiao with Gulou being closer to the drum tower. The area is quite walkable and fits in with a walking tour of Tianjin so if you do go here plan to spend an hour.

Ancient Culture Street was relocated as part of the massive urban renewal Tianjin has seen in recent years. The new version is much larger, purpose built for convenient browsing & shopping. Shops & stalls provide all the traditional tourist Chinese knickknack icons of wood & metal (musical balls, kites, coins, metal bookmarks, papercuts &c.) as well as many modern versions such as electronic singing crickets & such. Also available are some of the items Tianjin is famous for such as painted clay figurines. Shops range from the those selling cheap & cheerful souvenirs through to the more elaborate dresses & artwork. The street also houses contemporary art & sculpture. Sorry, only photos I have are of the less representative street stalls & art courtyards. Not too far away is the rather strangely named "Da Hutong" (sort of = "Big small alley") permanent market, if you want shopping for contemporary items.

If you have the chance to go to Tianjin do not buy souvenirs anywhere in China. Ancient Culture Street Street has the best selection and well priced souvenirs in China and is the best "chinese street" I have every seen. It is well worth the time to walk the area but you will buy at their prices. I got a peddie cab to and from the railway station (my pickup point) which added to the fun even if you think you may die. The area is very clean and great for photographs.

How this can be called "Ancient" defies any stretch of the imagination, given that the entire area, and everything it represents, was destroyed during the "Four Olds" campaign of the 1960s.
Best place I can think of to be robbed, either by pickpockets or vendors - one glimpse of a foreign face, and the prices suddenly inflate to astronomical levels.
There is nothing cultural about this place, nor ancient - the "antiques" are modern fakes, the buildings reproductions, and the culture transplanted from ethnic minorities around China (without the actual ethic minorities being present).

Its cute, its old, and it can get crowded. Avoid the earlier mornings and later evenings and go during off times. It'll take a good hour to explore every crevasse however if you plan on shopping it'll take longer. Paintings, Tianjin snacks, jewelry, antics (mostly), and toys are the big gifts to get there. You can also buy swords, Tianjin specialty item (Chinese opera masks), and gourds upon gourds upon gourds.... We go here to get Tianjin specific gifts for others when we travel away from Tianjin.

we only stopped by in Tianjin for a night before our transit flight home. we decided to visit this place as we heard from our colleague that this is a must-go place in Tianjin. It located only 20 mins away from our hotel (which also 20 min away from the Tianjin International Airport). However, make sure you visit this place early. All shops will start closing after 6pm. The street is pretty big with many ancient shops to shop by, one of the can't missing place is the 泥人张 (Clay Figurine Zhang), you will find many interesting hand-made clay figurine. Also try the local delicacies like Goubuli Steamed Dumplings, Erduoyan (the Ear-hole Lane) Fried Glutinous Cakes and tea soup. You may find many booths along the streets while enjoying the stone carving picture (which describing the stories about this place) on the wall of their buildings.

In winter vacation,my parents,my grandmother and I drove to Tianjin,we went there for eating and shopping.You should go to the Ancient Culture Street because that is a symbol of Tianjin's culture.That day was very cold,with strong wind,but with big amount of people,it was quite warm.But still ,you'd better not to go in winter.There were hundreds of shops with many things,but some are the same.You must go to visit Zhang's Clay Figurine which is Tianjin famous for.It was lively and looked so much like a real man!The Clay Figurine is a great culture of China.For food,I have some advice.If you want to eat the Fried Dough Twist,you should go to the Gui Fa Xiang shop.It was a time-honored brand,many of the local villagers come to there and buy it.We also went to Er Duo Yan'er Fried Cake,you should eat it when it's hot.It was sweet and sticky.The food culture is also important in Tianjin.

There are so many jade shops, craft shops, silk and pashmina stores, toy shops, shops for traditional Chinese clothing and such along Old Culture Street. I've had small sculptures of my kids made here, found exquisite aged pu-er tea here (for my collection), and picked up a variety of hand-made crafts. Off the main street, I've shopped at what is something of an outdoor flea market. It's also a nice walk to nearby Drum Tower Street.

I had wanted to visit this area on my previous two trips to Tianjin, but stiffling heat and later cold, prevented this. When I finally did make a concerted effort to visit, it was unfortunately Chinese New Year and it was a sea of people, not to mention the traffic jam out the front which doubled my taxi fare there. Be careful of cheats outside who wish to pose a photo with you and then demand 100 yuan. I may try to visit again at a better time of year.

I was there on a Wednesday so I can't answer definitively. However, being China, they will be on the look-out to make as much money as possible. Closing on a Sunday is primarily a western (Christian) concept. Having travelled extensively throughout China for both business & pleasure over the past 20 years, I can attest that unless it's Lunar New Year (Feb) or Golden Week (early Oct) pretty much everything is open.

Oh I’m not sure how much it is to get a taxi from the cruise port. But it is farley easy to flag a taxi around the place
