- Marc BDavenport, Florida45 contributionsA verdant woodland paradiseI visited the rainforest trails as part of a cruise excursion. Sadly, it rained the entire time I was in Ketchikan, including this hike. Yet, the experience was really nice. It was quiet, the sound of water dripping from above was so peaceful. There were many birds still active in spite of the rain, including red bellied sapsuckers, Stellar jays, and Townsend warblers. It is really difficult to take photographs in such rain, but I tried. It was so green and verdant, I expected to see hobbits or wood nymphs come sneaking out from under the foliage. The hike was pretty easy, although slippery. Dress warmly and plan on getting drenches if you do not have raingear.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 July 2024
- Thomas BLakewood, Ohio23 contributionsAll you could hope for and more!Wonderful experience booked thru the cruise line. Knowledgeable and fun guide. Hike thru rainforest and boardwalk was spectacular. Saw more eagles than we could count, and a bear!! Very professional and well run organizationVisited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 10 July 2024
- Bryan B37 contributionsLearn About Local Plants/Trees. Possible Eagle Photo Op.This guided hike provides more information on flora than fauna. The guide was knowledgeable. Aside from the hike, you may get to see a carver working on a totem pole. Note - if you're not on the clock and can spend a lot of time here, you will probably have a good opportunity to photograph eagles. Yo u'll definitely see eagles. With patience, you'll probably have some land or fly nearby. We also saw a bear. Note - the hike is very easy. Sneakers would work fine.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024
- Kristin W1 contributionGreat experience from start to finish! Our experience was great from Start to finish! Kaylie our bus driver was so knowledgeable of the area and very friendly! Our guides once we arrived, Olivia and Cassie were great as well! You can tell they love their job and we're very knowledgeable about the rainforest, its' history and the animals that reside there. We would absolutely recommend this trip to others and appreciate the staff for making it a great trip!Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 August 2024

- Maxine & PaulBlackpool, United Kingdom166 contributionsOutstanding TourOur guides Justin and Casey were excellent friendly but professional and they needed to be with black bears wandering freely around! Would we see bears? We needn’t have worried as after two minutes the signal was given and a black bear was spotted through the trees. Next a few minutes later another clearly in view helping himself to the salmon from the river that flows through. What a great experience observing these beasts in their natural environment. The guides were very knowledgable and would hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 September 2024

Sailed Windstar to Ketchikan and chose this excursion. Paid $299 per person. We started down the platform and stopped a couple of times for a long period of time, looking for bears. The high number of spotters made me skeptical we’d see anything although there were clearly signs that bears had been there. I questioned if they’d come around with large groups of us hanging out. We made it out to the river by the loud fishery, which looked to be the highest likely place we’d see a bear. Across the street were crowds of people who came by bus or had walked over from the neighboring area. They were seeing the same river I was watching but didn’t pay the $299 I paid. Made it to the raptor center and I thought it was a misunderstanding. There, 3 beautiful birds sat in a small fenced area. One man asked one question about how long the young eagles stay with their parents and got a, “Ooo you stumped me, not sure” response from the caretaker. I thought to myself, I’m sure that is a very simple fact that any eagle program would include. Then we were dismissed. THAT is a raptor center? We headed to meet Kevin, artist of the totem poles. Beautiful. When he mentioned that he’d be seeking help in carrying out his latest piece, while innocent, the guides joked they’d be off that day (totem poles are heavy). Kevin corrected them in saying that it’s considered an honor to carry a totem pole, in which the whole thing got awkward. The whole thing felt like a total scam. It’s a large piece of beautiful land, prevalent with eagles and bears, and I felt like someone knew they could take advantage of a tourist like me and get me to pay $299 to see a bear. I admittedly fell for it but I’m hoping Windstar takes them off of their excursion options.

This is the first time I have given a negative review on any experience I have had. I will give the benefit of doubt or write it off as a bad day or try again but not this time.
Have been on 3 excursion on this trip this is the only one that we were disappointed with from the start.
This was to be a small group of 10 or less and we had 18 people in group compared to 10 in other group, Tour guide was very inexperienced anddid not wait for whole group to get together and no instruction or what to expect on tour and started walking up deck after 5 minutes asked oh did anyone need to use restroom. Blamed weather for no bears could have explained what old shacks were for only after I asked she said old trapper shacks end of conversation.

Absolute worst excursion I've ever done. You're taken on a bus 25 minutes out to a woodsy area. You then spend the next hour walking on a short boardwalk through the woods and by a stream. We didn't see a single bear, though I understand it's not the tour company's fault. The boardwalk is short, so you cover very little area in the woods and very little area by the stream. It would have been nice to get to spend more time walking around in the woods and less time standing in one area as we slowly moved down the boardwalk. For $229 per person, I expect more. There was no value. After we gave up hope of seeing bears, we were corralled into a bird enclosure where someone spent a few minutes talking about three birds. We were then taken to a wood carving barn where someone talked to us for two minutes about carving totem poles. Then onto the gift shop. The total time in the woods was less than an hour. Please, save your money and book a different excursion. This is a terrible tour.

This sanctuary is a wonderful way to spend a few hours. After the bus trip you arrive at the staging area to meet your guides. Brea and Monique were knowledgeable and friendly. They "herded" the group to keep them safely together on the board walks. While we missed out on bears the "forest bath" was soothing. A visit to the Rapter Center and observing the totem carving topped off the day.

We had extremely poor guide. He was kind of sleepy in explaining. (Trip was on Sep 04, 2021 at 12 PM. ) Much better scenic views can be seen at Ward Lake for free - 10 times better. This trip was just a waste of money for us.

We visited the sanctuary as part of our Royal Caribbean tour. You are picked up from the cruise terminal in a bus and taken to the sanctuary. Our driver was extremely informative and friendly. Once at the sanctuary we were greeted by Reese and Steve. They took us on a walkway that overlooks a stream. The stream was filled with salmon which were there to spawn. We saw four mother bears and their cubs who were fishing for the salmon. We were able to get good photos. It was so special to see wild animals in their own habitat, which is set in a beautiful rainforest.
Our guides were very friendly and knowledgeable.
We then saw seals frolicking in the water, saw a salmon hatchery, then visited a raptor rescue and rehabilitation centre. Here we saw a bald eagle and horny owl at close quarters. Then a local wood carver and artist gave us a talk about his family tradition of creating carvings and totem poles.

So many bears! Our group was 23 people and was led by Savannah. She was funny and knowledgeable. Patrick and Nicole were great, too. Nicole was so helpful and pointed out several bears to me. It was a wonderful experience, worth the money and I would highly recommend it. Oh the Raptor Center is a nonprofit, so bring along a couple dollars to help them out! I didn’t have any cash so I made a donation online. Help these folks as they help the birds and educate others! Thanks Savannah, Nicole and Patrick!

Despite the rain it was a fantastic walk through the rain forest. Our guides Loki and Mickey did a fantastic job keeping us informed and filling in gaps with wildlife and plant knowledge and some truly awful puns. As soon as we got on the boardwalk we saw some bears and saw a handful just doing their thing.

This place is wonderous! It’s just beautiful and pristine. We went on a nature walk, and our guide, AJ, was just terrific! She was very knowledgeable, and showed us all of the indigenous plants and life around. We got to even sample some berries by picking them, and hold or touch a banana slug! The totems are beautiful as well, and the carver there is great and also knowledgeable. He explained all about the history and what he was currently carving. I will be excited to see the finished product. We also got to see a bald eagle up CLOSE! Just amazing!

We will be exploring Ketchikan area with car and would like to go to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary. Can we just show up on site and join a tour or do we need to prebook and take provided transportation from Visitors Center?

I did not know there is a bear specific tour. Do you have any info who to book that through?
Written 24 August 2019
I personally didn't see any bears since we were not guaranteed at all, but I do think there is a bear specific tour though I also don't guarantee there will be bears. Me and my family were on a cruise and we went on the tour to see the sanctuary but we did see some lovely wildlife so I definitely recommend it!

Do I have to book a tour to visit? Or can I take a cab and have a guide onsite?
Written 6 August 2018
I think you have to contact them for the tour. I don't know how often they run, and if they'll do a one on one. Your best bet is to go to the website and call to find out.

Written 6 August 2018
I drove by the place and booked a tour about 10 minutes before they were about to start one. They don't have private tours to my understanding, and they won't let you go in without a guide. I think it's probably because of the bears and safety reasons.
Written 10 August 2018
How do you find out the times this tour is offered?
Written 25 March 2018
We booked this through the ship we sailed on. We had two choices. One left 8am and the other around midday.

Is this wheelchair accessible
Written 15 March 2018
Yes, there is a very nice path that I would consider wheel chair accessible. They make several stops along the tour to talk about things so if you get behind, you have time to catch up. We were fortunate enough to see a bear when we went as well as several species of birds. I recommend it !
