Great snorkeling spot
Jun. 2021 • Family
Best snorkelling spot on Island (apart from passages which you need to do with a guide). We saw a huge range of fish (snowflake eel, peacock flounder, huge range of butterfly fish, needle fish, cornet fish, trigger fish, moray eel, big schools of a range of fish… the list goes on )Best spot is the far end of beach from the Rarotongan resort. There is public access here opposite Kavaea burger place) wear reef shoes as we have seen a stone fish here.

Snorkelling with tropical fish
Nov. 2019
I could have stayed in there all day.
Take some breadcrumbs to attract the fish.
We stayed at Vaiakura and they provided us with flippers masks and snorkels. You will need reef shoes, they had some of them too but we bought some at the local shops.

Beautiful
Feb. 2020
Such a unique place. We were lucky to be able to walk out our door every day and enjoy the reserve. There are abundant fish of all varieties. We were lucky to see a Snowflake Eel and a Blue Sea Star. Soo Many fish. It was concerning to see the local's bathing and fishing at the far end of the lagoon, away from the restaurant. I would hope they would realize how lucky they are to have this to enjoy.

Snorkeling heaven
Jan. 2020 • Family
Aroa marine reserve is the best snorkeling I have done. Our 8 year old son loved it also with fish a couple of metres of shore. Types of fish seen included butterfly fish, angelfish, giant tevelly, Sargent Majors as well as a morey eel. Snorkeling is great for young kids at low tide as water is shallow almost to outer reef, thoroughly recommend.

Crystal clear carm waters
Jan. 2020
My pasion over the last 50 years has been scuba diving and now snorkelling. I was out on this lagoon rain or shine and loved every minute. I brought an underwater camera with me this trip - but it under performed :( , but that certainly didn't take anything away from the overall experience. There were a lot of young fry around the coral along with some frisky and aggresive 'Picasso triggerfish'. Lots to see and somethings you don't expect. I never ceased to be amazed at the underwater world.

Lots of tropical fish here

This is probably my favourite spot for snorkelling. Plenty of fish to look at and huge chunks of coral. Beautiful white sand. Perfect.

Best snorkeling on the island
Jan. 2020
Fantastic snorkeling. The best snorkeling is 2/3 of the way to the reef. Never really gets deep. Numerous schools of fish with 20 to 50 fish in each school. Right next to the Rarotonga Resort. Great beach as well.

Waters are beautiful and warm
Jul. 2019
As a whole, the waters around Raro are beautiful. The marine life never dulls you and your always on the look out for Nemo and his friends. Snorkel is a must as is wearing your water shoes. If you go out a little further you may well see a turtle. Not really a place if your after swimming like at the beach or pool, more of an adventure swim. The weather at this time of year is still very warm.

Stunning!
Feb. 2019
Don't really have to put flippers on! Just walk out at low tide and watch the fish. The Rarotongan Club side is more family friendly.

Like a National Geographic film
Nov. 2019
The snorkelling in this lagoon is the best I have experienced, including Roatan. The north end by the public access is the best with lots of coral heads and channels through at high tide. At low tide you can walk quite a way out if you are not a swimmer. The diversity and size of the fish is amazing. You must visit the reserve. Just do not get too close as some of the fish will nip you. They are protecting their nest.
