- holidayreviews10Auckland Central, New Zealand53 contributionsPlant lovers paradiseAs a plant lover, I was in heaven here! $20 donation to walk the gardens, but it was so worth it. So many paths and benches to relax on. So many butterflies, geckos and incredible plants to see. Also got in early for an INCREDIBLE lemon meringue cheesecake. It really is worth the hype. Highly recommendVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 October 2023
- Gardengirl212Sydney, Australia1,331 contributionsSpectacular Gardens and MealsNot far from our accommodation we found Maire Nui Gardens and Cafe - and what a find it was! We wish we'd visited here sooner in our stay so we could return again at least once more - it was that good. We had such a lovely lunch of paw paw and smoked chicken salad plus a cajun seared tuna taco washed down with Rarotonga Brewery's delicious ginger beer and then a walk around the spectacular gardens photographing and delighting in the gorgeous flora and foliage. This experience is highly recommended and a must-do when visiting Rarotonga.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 November 2023
- jjlukeCalgary, Canada2,047 contributions“Enjoy your surroundings” a common theme for the gardens and cheesecakeMare Nui Gardens is a great way to relax while visiting and enjoy a slice of cheesecake. We were surprised not to have gone sooner as we are avid photographers and enjoy a nice relaxing stroll. The gardens are certainly not for everyone, but certainly worthwhile for those seeking a bit of solace and calm, if the island is insufficient as it is. The gardens have a variety of exotic tropical flora, with good upkeep as a lifelong project of the owners. I suppose “enjoy your surroundings” is a common recurring theme, both with the gardens themselves and the cheesecake that is allegedly world-famous. For one, the gardens do not have marked pathways but certain plants are identified, thus enjoy the surroundings knowing that they present a metaphor for life (you can go anywhere, you may not know where you’re going, getting lost is not bad, etc.). The cheesecake itself is delicious being its own unique flair, but what really makes it stand out are the “surrounding” fruits that you can enjoy which accompany the main delight. Overall it was a nice pleasant visit, especially where there are areas of shade to avoid the hot blistering sun. Please indicate if you found this review to be helpful as it would be greatly appreciated!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 February 2024
- Camper240377901461 contributionAmazing foodThis little garden cafe was amazing! We stopped in because Charlie’s was closed and we were hungry. We got the fish tacos and island poke and the ahi was seared to perfection and both dishes had amazing presentation. The staff was so nice too! We also had the cheesecake which was amazing! Highly recommend. I’m glad we stopped inVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 March 2024
- Margot MilesWhakatāne, New Zealand24 contributionsStunning setting. Divine food.Popped in for lunch and a wander around the gardens. The Cafe setting is so serene, beautiful. We ordered seared tuna tacos and salad. I'm not a person who takes a lot of food pics. This time was a must and pic attached. After lunch and a couple of wines we meandered around the gardens. There was a wedding party arriving and the setting among the garden was perfect. The owners are so welcoming, food is divine and the setting is stunning. Definitely returning.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 March 2024

It was cool in the shade of the trees and we enjoyed seeing how many similar plants we had at home but in much smaller unhealthy versions compared to here. Very beautifully cared for and maintained with a lovely cafe onsite also.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 April 2024

- ChandraSpringston, New Zealand64 contributionsDefinitely worth a visitVery pleasant afternoon visit for me and my 79 year old father. Food, coffee and service at the cafe were fabulous. Lots of variety of plants. It would have been great to see more names for some of the plants we didn't recognise and a general indication of the layout would also have helped. Saw lots of mina birds, a native pigeon and lots of little skinks.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 May 2024

We had a wonderful time walking through the gardens and of course grabbing a slice of cheesecake is a must at the cafe! Went on a weekday around 11am which was just perfect to have most areas to ourselves! A definite tranquil area to visit while in Rarotonga!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 May 2024

Cheesecake was very good and the sandwiches were probably the healthiest thing we had on the trip, but the food prices and the $10/pp entry fee is steep for a group of 6.
The gardens were nice but they were generally the same plants you see around the island just with neatly maintained paths between them. From the description were were expecting a bit more, or at least a range of rarer flowering plants.
Would recommend to vegans/vegetarians because there aren't that many other places, but the $60 entry fee for our group left a sour taste.

Thankyou for your review Shaun. Glad you enjoyed our fresh food at the cafe.
Our gardens are fully organic, with no sprays or chemicals of any kind used, as such the maintenance required to sustain the garden in its entirety requires a lot of labour for our visitors to enjoy.
Kids are free and do not require the $10 entry fee to the honesty box. Our cafe menu is based on using as much local and organic produce as possible and is prepared fresh on site every day.

Based on other reviews, I seem to be in the minority when I say I found the gardens underwhelming.
We walked in and paid, no one spoke to us and maps do not seem to be available. We set off thinking we would spend a lot of time strolling around the gardens.
After a lot of dead ends and roped off areas, we found ourselves back at the café in less than 30 minutes. We set off again but couldn't find any areas we hadn't already explored and we weren't afraid to jump over muddy patches to get to different areas.
Back at the café again, we asked to see the menu. The staff seemed to be busy doing something else and had no interest in serving us, so we left. It is a nice area to stroll around but for $10 each, I expected it to take a lot longer to explore, maybe areas were closed off when we were there.

Hi Emma
Thankyou for your review, Im sorry you felt myself or my staff did not have time to engage with you, unfortunately we are a little short staffed at present and it may have been during a busy lunch rush. We always strive to speak with all of our guests and explain the story and the importance of the gardens, and where to wander.
If you are ever interested in coming back please let me know or call me any time on 74125 so we can make sure you are looked after.

We visited here first in 2019 when the cafe was closed and loved the gardens. So many plants and amazing flowers to look at.
Race forward to 2022(thanks covid) and we visited again.
This time the cafe was open and the gardens looked even more spectacular.
This trip we visited twice, both times we had the same dishes as we couldn’t fault them. Fresh, flavoursome and delicious.
The service was spectacular with the owners daughter and son-in-law running the cafe so that their mother could focus on the garden. They were friendly and stopped for a chat making sure they got to share their story, one of hard work and determination.
Now the cheesecake!
This visit I was on a mission to find the best dessert on the island. And boy oh boy did I find it here!
Their plating was stunning with a huge array of fresh tropical fruit with coconut around the lemon meringue cheesecake. The cheesecake wasn’t too sweet and was well balanced. I wish we could get it here in NZ.
You guys should be proud of the cafe you have opened and I know that I will be back next time I am in Rarotonga.
Thank you heaps!

We could only visit for a short time, and really appreciated the good coffee and good service. I feel some more work is required to fully justify the $10 pp entrance fee, beyond the cafe. The huge amount of work to get it to current state is well noted. Some more botanical signage and maybe some more formal pathways would improve the visitor experience.

We visited on a Sunday when the cafe is closed. That was ok though as we wanted to see the gardens, but we were very disappointed. Apart from at the entrance there was no signage. There was no map and we did get a bit lost. Also the paths were very muddy. Would be much better if all the paths were stones like at the entrance. It would have been great also to have some signs with descriptions of the planting so we knew what we were looking at. Overall a very underwhelming experience which was not worth the $10 donation that we honestly paid into the donation box.

Thankyou for taking the time to place a review. Unfortunately we are unable to provide a map as the garden is constantly evolving, however we are working towards installing path markers to help lead people around the garden. We have also just finished producing 150 plant name signs which will start to be installed over the next fortnight, finally!
Sorry to hear you had an dispaoointing experience, if you ever care to return please come through on a week day when the cafe is open and our staff can point you in the right direction and provide more history as to the creation of the garden.

It now costs $NZ10 to wander through the gardens, but still worth a visit. Lots of work yet to be done after Covid to match what we saw in 2018, however a walk through the gardens taking as much time as you want was good, being able to walk around at your own speed with plenty of photo opportunities. We finished at the cafe and cold water was immediately bought to the table. We decided to 'just sit' for a while, so ordered a couple of glasses of Hunter Semillon (go NSW!) at $NZ8 a glass. Almost as refreshing as the water, and nicely cooled. As we had lunch elsewhere, we didn't try any food at the cafe, but other people around us assured us that what they had was good.

Delightful tropical gardens to wander around. Amazing plant life, with a wide range of palms, fruit and stunning flowers.
A really nice way to spend a hour or so.
Then, that cheesecake!
Light, creamy, beautifully baked and gorgeous presentation, the flavours and textures are perfect.
It states 'World Famous Cheesecake' not hard to see why

This is a really lovely experience, visiting these incredible gardens which have been grown wish love and devotion over many years, by one woman and her family and friends. The Cafe is lovely, the food is fresh and delicious! Such a wonderful, informal setting amongst the gardens, it is a beautiful little "escape", and well worth a visit. The family operate the Cafe, and are so welcoming and friendky, taking time to chat with everyone and talk about the history of these gardens. Enjoy a lovely wander through the gardens and explore the mighty traveller palms, the beautiful flora, its all just so gorgeous. Highly recommend this for something different to do. Make a donation towards the ongoing care of this amazing garden paradise, while you visit.

Sooo many amazing tropical plants! Yes, they’re everywhere on the island but in this slice of paradise you can experience the most amazing plants. In love with the amounts of bird of paradise and monstera. The way groups of plants grow together creating a family of tropical clusters. The cafe was closed when we visited but we were still able to experience the garden. Small donation in an honesty box. Definitely a must do if you’re a plant lover!

Let us know your proposed date, number of people and wether you want a ceremony and reception( we have a special heart shaped island for ceremonies).
Look forward to hearing from you.

How far from the ship's dock? We will be on the Amsterdam on Oct 30th in Rarotonga, but they don't have a tour here. Is there any kind of public transportation... Taxis or buses? My husband was a landscape contractor and we have visited botanical gardens on all our trips. Also, how much is the entrance fee?
thank you very much
