I was lucky to come on the day when the new permanent exhibition about the history of Costa Rica was opened. There is still one smaller room being redone (opening planned for June 2017) and one digital wall to be finalized, but the new exhibition is really great. Hence, ignore the earlier negative reviews and give it a try! The... More

The National Museum is a historic and natural jewel all in the same place. The Museum hosts a wide variety of butterflies, Morphos specially, which will make the visitor marvel at the beauty of this species and wonder at the possibility of having such fantastic natural habitat in the middle of downtown San Jose! The plants, and the butterfly farm... More

This is a well presented museum with a good selection of permanent and rotating exhibits. Information is in English as well as Spanish. It is housed in a former garrison of the city of San Jose and has a commanding view of the downtown. Bullet holes on the exterior are purposely left as a reminder of the revolution of 1948.... More

This is my top must see choice for friends traveling to San Jose, I wouldn't want them to go anywhere else! The narratives that accompany the pictures are very well put together.

The butterfly garden around the entrance foyer/ramp is a fabulous introduction to this aspect of Costa Rica's natural history and the butterflies even land on certain people. one young girl kept having them land on her which she hated and kept trying to swat them. The rest of the museum is tired and well wroth missing. Go to the Jade... More

The Butterfly Garden in the front was a pleasant surprise. After passing through that part there is not too many places to see but there is a nice tranquil garden, a very small underground art gallery and a small walk through museum. One side of the museum was locked so I am not sure what was in there to see.

Excellent place to learn about the rain forest (part of the building is one) and butterflies (which are part of the rain forest). Museum also has a demonstration of the trapiche, the machine used to produce the juice from sugar cane.

This is quite a large site and to start with we struggled to find our way round (maybe our fault: we have little Spanish). It has an excellent introduction to the archaeological history of Costa Rica, which is very clearly set out. We also enjoyed the recreation of the houses occupied by the former commandant (the site was a barracks)... More
