A tour of the teatro nacional is a MUST for anyone visiting San Jose. As a national symbol of Costa Rica, the theater is great not just for photo ops but for anyone interested in visiting a historic building with a rich history. Our tour guide was especially informative! Overall, a great visit for people of all ages.

It was our last day in Costa Rica and we had a morning to fill - and what a pleasure it was! We had a very good (English-speaking) guide who explained almost everything one could see with great enthusiasm. The history of its class-less intentions were illuminating. Don't miss it!!

The restaurant is quite good, and surprisingly reasonable in price. It has great ceiling murals to look at, and large, open windows that look out into the city square. Their chicken dishes are very good, as are their desserts, but we've never had anything we'd consider less than good. The theatre is old, and as such may not be comfortable... More

The 2nd floor area have exhibits of beautiful statues and gold gilded mirrors. The theater itself is awesome with a shape like Scala in Milan on a lesser degree.

We started at the Plaza de la Cultura to see the famous Teatro Nacional. A source of culturall pride , the theatre was made into a national Monument. We sit down in the Cafe del Teatro National and tried the exotic coffee combinations and desserts. Next we visited the famous Pre-columbian Gold Museum. The Highlight of the Walking tour.

Most beautiful building dating back to 1897. Marble from Italie on the floor, the colums and sculptures! Gold covered decorative work everywhere. Very knowledgeble guide. Tours at the hour.

This is a spectaacular building! The young guide was helpful but a little naive. Worth the expense if you have a couple of hours in San Jose.

To be honest there aren't many sights worth visiting in San Jose but this is definitely worth the time and money. A beautiful auditorium that is up there with some of Europe's finest. Some tacky baroque decorations in the stairwells but you may not dislike baroque style ! Oh and a great cafe on the way out........

Our first trip into San Jose was to see the museums the Capitol City had to offer. We were advised ahead of time to take the guided tour, even though you can go on your own, the guide brought up many interesting facts;one was that San Jose was the third city in the world to have electricity behind Paris and...
