This is a place to go if you hate crowds because they certainly aren't here. This place is remote. I didn't see over 50 people at the beach. The waves look a little scary. But really pretty place made for sitting at the beach with...More

Puerto Viejo and the neighboring beaches (Playa Negra, Punta Uva and Manzanillo) are the most beautiful beaches in all Costa Rica. A lot of places to eat, cheap or expensive ones, typical Caribbean food if you want to try it (it is a very nice...More

A beautiful beach that's an earthly paradise. Lots of green, sand and cafe's to buy a delicious cocktail to relax and enjoying the view. The water is clear and clean but not super clear, that's because of the turbulent waves, sand and black vulcano sand...More

A very beautiful one. There is sand and water and trees. People swim there sometimes. Wow, they make you write a lot about a beach did I hit 100 yet?

It was dissapointing to spend time in Puerto Viejo. It felt like a town that once was a great place but now is a tired, uncared for by the residents and commune, garbage and rubbish everywhere. Not to mention you are pretty much walking in...More

We've been to a lot of beaches on our travels and this was definitely in the top 5! It was beautiful black sand beach that was completely empty. We walked the beach a few times and felt like we had the place entirely to ourselves....More

Hi - just starting my research into staying (probably) in Puerto Viejo for about a week-10 days, after touring Costa Rica for about a week. We are looking to stay beachfront at a nice swimmable beach, but I have found various ideas of what people think nice beaches "are" - obviously - I don't waves outside my door, I want to be able to go into calm water and swim every day. Thoughts please and thank you? We picked Puerto Viejo because of the vibe of the town and to be close to it each evening. I think Cahuita may be too small, plus from what I'm reading the beaches there aren't as calm? Would love any thoughts, thanks so much!

I am taking the bus to Puerto Viejo from San Jose. I am staying at The Lotus Garden and the only address indicated is - across from Salsa Brava. How far is this from the bus station? Can I walk, if so, in what direction or take taxi/local bus, if any. What is Salsa Brava? Thanks in advance.
