- Fiona R6 contributionsStop for a SnackMy favorite cafe in the area; I would go every day if I could! Great spot off the side of the road with amazing mochas, teas, chocolate bars, and pastries. All their ingredients seem really high quality, and they have a truly lovely staff as well. On our way out of town we got lunch to go, and it was fantastic. Try it all.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2023
- amy d2 contributionsVery enjoyableWe had the best time. The coffee (and muffin) we're delicious, best we've had so far in CR. We did the tour with Dexter and he really knows his stuff! Very informative and so much chocolate, plus some fantastic views. We really enjoyed it all, thank you!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 December 2023

We've been in Puerto Viejo for a week and this was one of the best experiences we've had. The tour was led by Paul, the owner. We took a wonderful hike into the cocoa forest while Paul explained everything we wanted to know about chocolate, its history, and much more. When we arrived at the top of the mountain, we were treated to an awesome view and a very extensive tasting of many types of chocolate. After that we were shown how chocolate is made, from raw beans to finished bars. I learned so much and had an awesome time. Thank you Paul.

Maybe the best event of my trip, although it's close among several. This event is totally organized - the owner gave us the lowdown from the tree to the store. The view from the top of the cacao farm was the best I had the entire time there - two weeks.
He has patterned his sampling (tastings) similarly to the way Napa and Sonoma arranges there. Try this chocolate - what does it remind you of? Is it different depending upon the part of the tongue it touches? If it tastes spicy, what spice does it remind you of. What does it taste like when combined with coffee, curry, garlic, etc.? His wife was equally hospitable and knowledgable.
Be prepared to walk a little. If you have problems walking on flat ground, you'll have more hiking to the top of the hill. If you're in at least average shape, it's easy.
Only one thing I'd change, and I have this problem all over Central America. I like t-shirts. I liked his t-shirts. I'm only 6 feet one inch and between 190 and 200 lbs. - the largest size, the XL, does not even come close to fitting. Buy some XXLs for sale and I'll take half a dozen to commemorate my visit! :) I know, it's a small thing. Don't let it keep you from going. You'll love it!

I joined a few tours while in Costa Rica (e.g. coffee farm) but this was the only memorable tour: Paul is super excited about his subject and that proved infectious. I wish I had stocked up on chocolate there then (which I did not because it was the beginning of the trip) because the only point of sale outside Puerto Viejo is a San Jose market that happens on Saturdays only.

The owner's fascinating tour on his cacao tree property includes a short hike with great wildlife spotting opportunities up to an incredible lookout. You'll get an unforgettable appreciation for chocolate making. At the top, there's taste testing of chocolates from local farms. This is one of the best outings we did our trip in this area -- highly recommend it.

Really awesome tasting room... they give you lots of liberties (in fact too many) to try every flavor. Some of the best chocolate I have had in a while too.
They owner is a guy who moved to PV from Minnesota many years ago and is really nice. He really is good hearted about selling great chocolate and involving the local community and empowering farmers to sell it at a fair price. If you see a little blonde kid running around that's his son, who definitely doesn't lack personality. The little guys chocolate recommendations are actually pretty good too.

The place is a wild mix of a yoga studio, coffee bar and chocolate shop. Our absolute favourite was the orange chocolate truffle. The coffee was nice but not my favourite town.

My husband and I took a private tour with just the two of us. We had so much fun learning about how chocolate is made and tasting the fruit and bean how it comes in the wild. The chocolate was, of course, delicious and so interesting that different chocolate tastes different just because of what farm it comes from. We never would have guessed. They have also started doing a chocolate festival that we would like to have been there for and would probably stay at least one night in their place if we had known about it before. Would definitely go again if given the opportunity.

I love seeing how things grow and how things are made, so this tour worked for me having both. The owners are currently leading the tour so I felt privileged to capture their vision and values. I love the setting, the business model and philosophy. The tasting was in a spectacular ocean view setting and was the calibre of a fine wine tasting. I could write a book on the experience but you MUST go yourself if you are in this area and want to see chocolate from the cacao pod blossom to the end product.

Paul's chocolate farm is simple outstanding, and his love for cocoa (and wholesome food in general) is apparent. Lots of good, positive energy was felt on the tour, and the chocolate tasting towards the end of the tour was amazing. You get to sample wonderful prepared chocolates on a terrace that sits up high on a hill overlooking the Caribbean and the jungle! This is a "must do" when you visit Puerto Viejo!

Ido you recommend hiking boots and long pants for this tour? Are there toilets at the facility?

As long as you aren't wearing slippery shoes you'll be fine. It's a bit uphill, but not a rough go at all!

Our tours serve only vegan chocolates. We also serve vegan coffee and smoothies and vegan chocolate drinks! The only non vegan part of the tour is we add honey to the ceremonial drink. If you do not do honey we can make it without...simply let us know when signing up at the beginning of the tour.
How much is the tour?
