Professional school and excellent cultural experience
Jan. 2020
This was the second time I attended Intercultura. I have tried 2 other language schools in Costa Rica and felt this was by far the best. It is very professionally run and organized. The teachers are excellent. They classes are up to 6 people. They had many students there and that allows them to put you in appropriate levels. Some of the other schools didn't have as many students, so didn't have capacity to accommodate many levels. They go over plan for lessons for the day and make sure to work through plan. they have white boards that worked well and were very useful. They use a variety of activities to teach and encourage a lot of conversation.
They have extracurricular activities such as salsa dance, yoga, cooking, Zumba that are all free. They organize tours from the school, although this time I didn't use any, I have in the past and they were well organized.
They have free coffee all day and filtered water available. There are hammocks and many places with shade to sit under. The campus is right on the beach and they have showers and a change room so you can go to the beach, clean off and step into your classroom. Classrooms are air conditioned and it works well. They have lockers to use for when you are at beach or don't want to carry with you to class.
They have some student housing. My friend stayed there and I visited the rooms. It seemed very adequate- air conditioned ( I consider it a must as the temps were 38-39 degrees C the week I was there.) with private bathroom and common area with plenty of chairs/rocking chairs, table and full kitchen for students to use. The housing is newly built, so is in good condition. Can be some noise from restaurant on beach.
They have workbooks they provide you with. They have wifi, although it can be spotty at times.
It isn't the cheapest school, but then again the one that was cheaper was not nearly as good as this one. For all the reasons I mentioned above.
It is a great way to meet fellow adventurers! Many adults travelling solo attend, so it is fairly easy to find others to do things with.

Almost Perfect
Jul. 2019
I loved my classes! They nailed my initial placement perfectly, and the three different levels I took in three weeks were very helpful in taking my Spanish to the next level.
After my first week, the teacher wisely suggested that I skip the next level, and she was right on the mark. My homestay, while uncomfortable at first (no hot water, awkward silences with the family) was ultimately the best way for me to enhance the language learning that I was doing in the classroom. My host family was polite and kind, the house was clean, and the meals were delicious. My house (like most, not all) had wifi for free and air conditioning for an extra charge.
The school is located on the beach in a sleepy surfing village. As a result. there was A LOT of downtime for me, which ended up making me feel somewhat lonely by my third and last week. If you're in your 20s and like to party, you'll probably fit in well and find friends with whom to party late into the night at a few of the gringo bars in town. As someone older and traveling solo, I didn't do much partying. Since the sun set around 6pm, the nights were a bit boring for me. An introvert might relish this downtime; to me, it was stifling. I loved the free Zumba classes offered twice a week after class and attended a few cooking classes as well (which were okay), but I wish the school offered a couple of things a week in the evening. I suggest once a week drinks in Spanish at one of the bars, organized by one of the teachers. Everyone pays for their own drinks and you sit at a big table and speak Spanish. That way, people get out at night but aren't forced to hang until 2am speaking English.
I went on a few excursions that were offered by the school (led by external tour companies). The one-day adventure to Rincon de la Vieja was a waste of money, but the hike to the local nature preserve was worth every penny and an excellent boost for my Spanish listening comprehension, not to mention a decent workout and education in local flora and fauna. I also loved the half-day dolphin viewing and snorkeling trip; beautiful day out of the water with hundreds of dolphins surrounding our boat.
In sum, I would have LOVED my experience if I had capped it at two weeks. The town is just a little too limited to support all that free time.

My Favorite Costa Rican Spanish School
Jul. 2019 • Solo
I can't say enough wonderful things about Intercultura Sámara campus. To start with, communication was excellent even before I signed up for classes. They answered any questions I had very thoroughly. After signing up they provided homestay and other information during the time frame they had given. The first Monday, you will take a placement test. They placed me exactly where I needed to be. I am a Spanish teacher, but teach lower levels and needed a good brush up on higher level concepts. My conversational skills improved greatly, as communication is the primary focus of the classes. Immersion classes also make for quick learning. The instructors are great and will work with you to suit your needs. Just talk to them and they will help you! The free extracurricular activities are plentiful and fun. Take advantage of the other tours they help arrange! There are many cool things to learn and see around Sámara. The homestay is such a great opportunity to build relationships with locals. It will help with cultural understanding and is great practice for Spanish outside of class. I have studied with another school in Costa Rica, also with multiple campuses. Intercultura is now my preferred Spanish school. I will be back for sure! ¡Hasta el próximo verano!

Hi 1traveladdictblog, Thank you for your feedback. We truly appreciate it when students take the time to let us know areas where we may improve. As our Spanish program follows a communicative approach to learning, focuses on communication and student participation, we ask for students understanding that all classmates come with different backgrounds, sets of knowledge and learning pace in all four areas of language acquisition. We maintain a maximum class size of 6 students total, in hopes to keep the groups small and provide the highest quality of instruction possible. We also cover in the initial orientation on the first day of class that if at any point you have questions or concerns about level and placement, all students are welcomed at reception and in our Spanish department and so that we can take a look again at the placement and situation to what type of adjustments could be made. We want to help our students have the best Spanish immersion experience possible. Please feel free to email us directly with more details about your experience with us at info@interculturacostarica.com. Your feedback is appreciated. In regards to Samara and safety, Samara is a very safe place and we encourage students to go out and enjoy all that there is to do in Samara, as well as the night life. That said, we also remind students to use common sense and remember to use similar precautious that they would use back home or when travelling in any other place. These simple steps can lead to a safe, enjoyable and fun experience during the students time while here in Samara Beach, Historic Heredia or anywhere in Costa Rica. All the best, Intercultura

Total Immersion for language and culture
Aug. 2018
I felt well taken care of by the staff who were most efficient in making sure that I was in the right class but also arranging my flight and land transportation to the other school. They even called to make sure I had arrived safely. Both home stays were terrific! Although I was the oldest student at both locations, I never felt left out of the numerous school activities. Total immersion is the best way to learn a language and Intercultura is a wonderful program for immersion.

Very happy and impressed with Intercultura in Samara!
Aug. 2018 • Family
From previous trips to the area I knew we would love the location, but this was our first experience with attending Intercultura and I am very happy that we chose to do so! My two children ages 13 and 15, and two of their friends, the same ages, spent a week at the school. We had to do a private class for the four of them as we didn't plan well and were not arriving on a Monday. However, Intercultura was very helpful and flexible with making a schedule that would work for us. The teens were very happy with their experience and though we parents did not take language lessons, we were still able to take part in the other activities and feel part of the community. I did cooking, dance and Zumba classes in the evenings which were all excellent! The location is gorgeous, right on the beach, and as others have said there are changing rooms and showers so you can go directly from swimming to class, or vise versa! As a teacher myself, I very much appreciated the organization and atmosphere of the school. Being part of Intercultura really enhanced our experience in Samara. On our next visit, I will be sure to put myself in class as well!

This was one of the best learning experiences I have ever had. They are so professional and the curriculum is terrific. I am hoping to go back soon to continue. Every need is covered....really this is a top notch school. I cannot say enough or really describe just how great and fun it was, I was sad to leave and which I could have stayed longer.

Fantastic for the whole family!
Aug. 2018 • Family
Intercultura does a fantastic job! This review is kind of 3-in-1 because of all of the different things they offer.
I was able to drop in and attend the language school for 5 days. My teacher Dariella was knowledgable, friendly and accommodating. There are students of all ages from around the world at any given time in the summer, which makes a great cultural experience even that much better!
My 16 year old was very easily able to start our trip a week in advance of the rest of the family, and see another part of Costa Rica (Heredia) because of Intercultura's original city campus, homestay and teen programs!
Then my 14 year old (who couldn't go in advance because of her schedule) was able to join Intercultura at the Samara campus midway through the teen program. The chaperones and other kids were so welcoming and she fell right in with everyone.
The kids were busy, engaged, and had some independence in Samara because of their involvement with the school, which was a great way to travel.
Their Spanish improved tremendously because of the immersion program.

Fun and very well organized
Jun. 2018 • Family
My family of 5 with varied Spanish capability got a lot out of just 1 week of classes. The teachers are experienced professionals and the classes are intensive. The home-stay arranged by Intercultura was worth doing for a very authentic taste of local family lifestyle and simple housing. Samara the beach town is fun with good services.

A Professional School
Apr. 2018 • Solo
If you want to learn Spanish, come to this facility here in Samara. I looked at several options to that end and found Intercultura the best value in terms of price, quality and atmosphere. After two weeks there, my sentiment remains the same. There is a blend of old school and up to date technology. Yes, a bell rings to signal start of class or breaks etc. and in the classroom they use an interactive software program synced with a laptop with innumerable teaching aids. Teachers are the best displaying patience and knowledge. To Darihanna, Ruth and Silvia, thank you for your time and contribution to my improved Spanish speaking ability. Outside of class one can walk to the beach just footsteps away or enjoy several nearby restaurants. You will find quite a spread of people here from around the world. Great wifi around the surrounding grounds. Administration is also quite helpful for anything else you may need in the area such as housing, transportation, recommendations and so on. Everything to like here. Me gusto mucho.
