Costa Rica is much more famous for its nature than its architecture, so I'd never managed to make it to see this church, despite having lived in Costa Rica for 10 years. I finally did a weekday trip with the family and it was surprisingly nice. The building itself is beautiful, and the interior decorations are just as pretty. We... More

Besides being very beautiful both inside and out, you must realize that this Basilica is more than ancient history. It is a very important contemporary and meaningful part of cultural life in Cartago and decidedly, much of the entirety of Central America in its religious significance.

Beautiful church from the outside and inside. Many people have gone there to pray for their losses. They have several unique displays of donations of silver jewelry from people who have lost their limbs or had problems with various organs. I have never seen this before. They also have a place to receive holy water. They have a gift shop... More

I love this place. I live in Cartago province and the basilica is about 35 minutes from my home in the mountains. I like to go here to meditate but only make it there about once or twice a month. My grandchildren enjoyed visiting but our whole family is into angels and all along the roof line are angels look... More

The basilica shouldn't be missed on a visit to Cartago. The architecture inside reminded me of St. Peter's basilica, though this basilica is much smaller. The stained glass windows were my favorite as they range in age and are quite beautiful. The basilica is a site for pilgrimages, and it was interesting to see people traverse from the front door... What a church in a small town. It is beautiful and the entire story of the church is told on plaques on the wall. The church is huge and gorgeous. August 2nd is the day it was founded and every August 2nd, millions of people flock to the church. Said to have healing powers and there are displays of charms... More

Cartago is a short stop away from San Jose with a direct bus. Most of the sites are close to the bus stop and within walking distance. I went on sunday and while people seemed open to visitors entering during mass, I briefly glimpsed from the outside to be respectful. Inside looked absolutely marvelous. It doesnt compare to many of... More

This is a place to visit if you are in town. We visit it on a Sunday afternoon and stayed for mass. The weather was so nice. Be sure to visit the rock where the Virgin Mary appeared hundreds of years ago

We drove through Cartago and stopped at the Basilica. It is a beautiful church with stain glass panes. Along the side near the bottom they have the holy water that you can fill containers with. I am not Catholic but this is one of the most beautiful experiences I had. There is a nice courtyard with restaurants along the streets.... More
