If you talk with the locals they will tell you to go to Scratch River or the Free hot springs. This is perfect if you are travelling on a shoestring budget as it is FREE! To get there go to the yellow gate next to Tabacon Springs. You can park on the road shoulder and you will definitely see it. Walk down the path behind the gate and in a very short walk you will arrive at a bubbling hot creek. You can go 24 hrs a day but keep your items in your site. Leave your valuables at the hotel and just bring a towel and prepare to relax.

My wife and I shared a fabulous hour in this heated river. It was magical. It is as one would expect popular with many people there. Just something about walking around a river thats bath temperature. Highly recommend when you're in La Fortuna

We stopped here on a whim because a hot river or something so intriguing. At first I didn't like it because there was a little bit of trash at the bottom area where we came in. Nothing terrible, just some chips bags things like that. We walked under the bridge to the top area which was a little bit crowded... More

DO NOT WEAR FLIP-FLOPS. I will say it again. DO NOT WEAR FLIP-FLOPS. The current will pull them off your feet and send them down the river, never to be seen again. We saw at least 4 zip past us during the hour that we spent there. Water shoes, water sandals, river shoes; wear something substantial on your feet, because... More

A short hike off the main road into La Fortuna so very easy to get to. Water is pleasantly warm and surprisingly there is no smell of sulphur. Small pools have been created by damming the river which are nice to sit in and relax. I felt the surrounding area was a bit dirty due to all the trash that... More

I made my way to the free natural hot springs and enjoyed some time in the volcano heated water. The water is surprisingly hot and clear. There's a couple of public buses, but if you team up in a taxi it's not too expensive to get there and back. I went in daytime, but it's also a popular hotspot for... More

We decided to hit up hot springs after a long day of hiking, I checked out the resorts that offer them at 75-300 for a day pass but we decided to try the free untouched one. It's right next to tabacon, you will see yellow tape and cars parked along the road. You walk down a steep hill, climb over... More

In need of quite a lot of reconstruction, the hot stream and pools were nevertheless really lovely, and perfect after the big walk up to the lake on Cerro Chato. Watch bags, though, as there were a number of people not in the pools, just hanging around.

This place is refreshing and since it's open to the public it gets really crowded at night. Be careful walking down because there is no lighting. Locals and tourists alike enjoy it.
