A scam. All remade for tourists. Nothing is remotely old there. There are many places worth seeing in Shanghai, but this is not one of them.

This is a wonderful place to see the old Shanghai, from the lovers bridge to the restaurant and shops. A great place to mingle with the Chinese people.

My father and I visited here while awaiting our flight back home. There are multiple shops with various types of traditional gift ideas. Enjoy!

We enjoyed an early evening walking through the old town followed by a meal in the restaurant shown in the photograph. It was great to just soak in the atmosphere and, as a colleague pointed out, not be constantly distracted by advertisements since we couldn't read them! The only distraction were the various people offering us what I assume were... More

Visited one Saturday morning. Great street food and plenty of shopping. New coffee shop about to open which should be awesome.

This was probably the most crowded areas that we were in while in China. Literally people were wall-to-wall, going both directions. There is a "square" for lack of a better term in the middle surrounded by shops, the square is all water stocked with fish. The buildings are ornate in a typical Chinese way. There are a lot of "souvenir"... More

You walk back couple of hundred years and get the feel for what China used to be like. I really enjoyed the houses, shops and gardens.

This is a great place to start for trinket shopping. The crowds can be massive, but that's part of the fun (since the crowds are mainly locals). And you can always purchase a ticket into the Yu Gardens for some peace an quiet. I actually prefer to do my shopping in the smaller streets surrounding the main complex. But this... More

Very touristy, tons of people. Lots of low end shops selling knockoffs. Make sure you bargain, if you want to buy something. We left early due to a very aggressive, local lady following us around trying to get us in the shop she works for. She went as far as to wait for us outside the restaurant. It was very... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Shanghai’s original walls live on in the curve of the streets that serve as the border to the old city. An aerial view shows a clear circular outline and parts of the original wall are preserved as monuments to the ancient past. The main tourist attraction of Yuyuan (which means Yu garden, though it is often redundantly referred to as Yuyuan Garden) draws hordes of tourists every day, but wandering the streets around the complex reveals more exciting attractions such as food and antique markets. There are also streets lined with shops peddling everyday wares such as Chinese dining ware and craft notions that can be even more enticing to visitors uninterested in the usual tourist fare.
