Very nicely designed buildings.
It is a good idea to set aside time to tour the area without rushing.
Stalls selling souvenirs and small shops in the area.
Overall a great looking place.

Tiny but splendid old town with lots of corners to make romantic photographs. The little shops are focused on tourists, but they are still fine and do not have aggressive sales methods.

This place is just outside Yu Garden. It is extremely crowded and touristy, but a good experience. Buildings had a very Chinese facade and you can get plenty of food, drinks, clothes and souvenirs here. Just get used to the crowds and you will enjoy your visit.

This area is very crowded and touristy but amazing to experience. The buildings alone are worth coming to see. It gives you a taste of what Old Shanghai may have been like.

Nanshi is bustling, crowded and rather loud, but should definitely be part of your visit to Shanghai. Many, many choices for food, some shops with high-end merchandise, and others with inexpensive souvenirs. A bit touristy for sure, but well worth seeing!

The Old City which seems to be being knocked down by the day is fascinating. Lots of small shops and character with lots of surprises

It’s quite exciting to walk around this bustling yet touristy part of Shanghai, near the Yu Garden. We enjoyed looking at various shopping stalls, even buying a mah-jongg set, and eating some delicious dumplings. It is crowded, but there’s some interesting architecture, and a lot to see and do.

It was too crowded that I didn’t enjoy. Other than the buildings/architecture and many food options, nothing else stood out for me. Happy to have said I’ve been here but wouldn’t come back again

This site got a facelift during the Beijing Summer Olympics...so it’s a shiny commercial tourist destination for international travelers....almost all vendors can converse in English. It’s very crowded and with some interesting food stands and some traditional tea shops. This was one of the few historical sites where higher end souvenir shopping for international travelers was apparent. If you have a chance to visit a tea shop on the 2nd floor, there is a panoramic view of these historic buildings against the back drop of the new modern China with the Shanghai Tower on the horizon. Unfortunately the adjacent Yu Gardens was closed for some renovation work an typically part of a tour....check out their website for admission....We were warned that Yu Gardens is very very busy....so we opted to visit another smaller garden.....the fundamentalists of design are about the same unless the owner has a specific passion.....the garden we visited - the owner has a pet tiger...

If I were you I would get a guide. Let them pick you up at the airport. They can show you the high lites of Shanghai for five hours or so and you would one able to at least not panic about getting back. We had a guide the first day and she was amazing. We spent about 6 hours with her. You say you have 10 hours, so it is very feasible. We used Jenny's Tours. You can look it up as it won't let me post her email address.. Our guide was Alice, she spoke perfect English. Driver and her were about $125-$150. I have recommended her to several people. Shanghai is a beautiful city. With a guide you will make the most of your time.

I couldn't find this place! I walked all around where the location shows on this page, but there was no shopping area. There was one old looking building, but it was closed and dark at 7pm so I don't think that was it. Can someone give more specific location details?

See if you can find on GOOGLE MAPS with this coordinates:

When you look at it through satellite mode, you'll see a zigzag path bridge.
