Old Deco style buildings in Shanghai are rare: a simple but efficient renovation permitting 4 floors suitable to exhibitions. Colored windows are precious on the stairs. The terrace offers a different view from the Bund.
Easy access from exit #6 of East Nanjing Road Metro Station on Line 2 and Line 10: straight on and turn right ad then left.

How much interesting? it depends from the exhibitions! Current Ugo Rondinone about sleeping on the floor clowns is pleasant.

The Museum itself (in the former building of the Royal Asiatic Society) is not particularly interesting but it is in a great area close to the intersection of the Bund and Suzhou Creek for checking out early 20th century architecture - especially art deco. Buildings in the immediate area (Xianggang Lu, Huqui Lu, Beijing Lu and Yuanmingyuan Lu) include the Christian Literature Society (which goes right through the block), the China Baptist Publishing Building, the old YMCA and the former British Consulate. The Union Church, a bit closer to Suzhou Creek, is also worth a look.

Have been there a few times and never disappointed. There is a small shop on ground floor, exhibitions on next floors and a cafe/library on top where you can chill and enjoy some books. You might need to check on the exhibition before as sometime it might sound expensive for a small museum.

Absolute scam. Paid 50RMB each to see nothing but white walls. Asked for a refund but was refused. Explanation was that the empty space was a form of expression... are you kidding me? This place should be avoided at all costs.

Three floors of white, almost empty nothing in July 2017 . Top floor - sunlight through skylight may make afternoon patterns. Third floor light bulbs and a noise like running fingers round a glass. Other floor a projected clock and ill fitting blinds raised and lowered mechanically. Gift shop. £5 entry fee. Coffee no longer free. Australian couple suggested that the lifts were the highlight!

A contemporary art exhibition space is always only going to be as good as the current exhibition and it's not my intention to rate the art here, but more the venue.
We saw Song Dong's 'I don't know the mandate of heaven', which was a well conceived set of works based around a Confusian maxim and the artist's feelings at reaching the age of 50 in a changing world. Without fully understanding all the Chinese cultural references and text, it would be unfair to review the art fully. The works were interesting, but with some notable exceptions (such as the first floor piece based around the media propagation of images and cultural identity), not all of it seemed especially original to me.
But back to the venue. It's set in a slightly tired but historic building just off the Bund and at only 30RMB entrance fee was worthy of a look, but maybe didn't merit the day trip we had in mind. My biggest disappointment was in fact the lack of a proper café. There was a coffee stand on the top floor that was closed but it looked like it might have been a largely dismal affair anyway. Not being a hardcore art fanatic, a coffee or glass of wine makes all the difference and I could have used this refreshment. This may seem like a niche point, but the excellent café at the Lafayette Arts & Design centre (that recently housed the Tim Burton Exhibition) was a real highlight.
In the end, it is all about the art and the exhibition though. I would research what's on first as the venue is perhaps only inviting enough to take a chance on if you're already in the Bund area.

On our first day in Shanghai we visited the Bund and went out of our way to visit the Rockbund Art Museum based on a suggestion in our guide book. We were very disappointed by the size of the museum and the poor quality of the exhibits. The items mentioned in our tour book had long departed the museum and the current exhibits resembled a recycling facility more than an art museum.
Take my advice and keep walking past the Rockbund when you are in Shanghai.

Brilliant show when I visited, entrance is incredibly cheap and the cafe at the top is a secret oasis with a great view of the Pudong area

We were two couples going to see the final day of the inaugural Hugo Boss Young Asian artists exhibition. Wonderful Art Deco building. the exhibition worked well over the five floors of the gallery and we had plenty of space and time to spend as long as we desired trying our best to interpret what the young Asian artists were presenting. Great modern art giving plenty of scope for interpretation and individual bull-****.
Lovely terrace through the cafe area, with glimpses of the Pudong skyline and The Bund, though the cafe itself was not so welcoming and was a disappointing top of the show.
Location is also very good, as the Rockbund is surrounded by traditional French Concession architecture, and some high end retail options.

I fell in love with this little art museum, the arts exhibitions are on 5 floors, big space + good lightning, the last floor is a small coffee + a terrace with a nice view on Shanghai skyline, you will just love it. The cost is only 15 rmb, you should consider visit it, if you love art + architecture like me, enjoy !
