Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have just completed a wet market tour and class with mike. The market visit was really interesting and the cooking class was great. We highly recommend it. Great value also as you eat all you cook!

Two friends and I did this cooking class on September 13, 2018 and we could not have had a better experience! Chef Mike is a fantastic cook and a wonderful teacher. He is also really fun to hang out with! His kitchen facility is awesome and has everything you need. We chose to make the pork dumplings and sesame balls and both turned out great. Chef Mike also gives you the recipes so that you can make them at home, and I plan to make them in the next few weeks. This class was great and I would 100% recommend this to anyone.

I have done cooking with the Chinese Cooking Workshop three or four times with five of my friends and will defiantly be going back to attempt some more dishes! Chef Mike is great, really friendly and helpful, with great English and a great sense of humor, cooking with him is always enjoyable. The setting is very nice in the center of the French Concessions in an old Town House. And the food is WONDERFUL! I have been taught to make sweet and sour chicken, kung bao chicken, Shanghai noodles, special fried rice, lemon chicken, spring rolls, soup dumplings (very tricky), green onion pancakes and prawn dumplings. You get to take a copy of the recipes home and I have made each one of these for my family. But the best bit is after the lesson you get to eat what you have made and if your too full then you can take your cooking home. Overall a fantastic activity and something I will be taking all my guests to do.

I visited the cooking workshop with 10 work colleagues from around the world. The facility is nice and could probably handle 15 or so guests in the inner dining room. They have an outdoor courtyard that could bet set up to handle more people. The actual cooking area is rather small and having 4 people and the chef using the woks at once was about all that is possible. You are able to select your dishes in advance and are asked to pick some appetizers and main dishes. half of the group worked in the dining area on dumplings and spring rolls while the rest cooked. Each had a chef to assist. Some of the preparation was a little difficult for the average home cook, so the chefs did a little more than I am used to in a cooking class, but at least one of the dishes would not have turned out very well if they hadn't helped. Lots of fun drinking and cooking with people that you know and the food was very tasty. I would return if the need to entertain a group in Shanghai arose again. It is set in a nice part of the French Concession which allows for social activity before or after as well.

First of all, you can eat what you cook, so dont go to lunch beforehand...as we did
The class is fun and the food is good. However, I was actually hoping to learn a bit more (techniques, tips, cuts etc) and not just cutting and cooking. Mike is great, and maybe it is worth to have a private lesson with him, it is not that much more expensive and you can obviously tailor a lesson much more including dishes (even dumplings only if you like). The groups are small, and the dishes are easy, so everyone can prepare something nice :)

Learned to make pork dumplings from the ground up - 100% learn by doing. Chinese woman that is the teacher is excellent, but no english skills. You need to attend with a local speaker (or as part of a tour like UnTours, separate review). She showed us everything and bent over backwards to help us! I am not a pizza maker (similar skills) and now my wife really likes my buns!! Best to take on Shanghai Day 1 then you know how to order food!
Would take another!

Pros
- convenient location
- nice outdoor working area
- easy to book
- good value for money
Cons
- the teacher (very nice senior lady) doesn't speak too much of English, however, she shows the recipes step by step so it is easy to follow
Summary
Very happy with the courses. When you leave the cooking lesson you know how to start with your own cooking at home and after it is only matter of practising.
Tip:
Dim Sum lessons are very good.

We were looking for a few hour local-feeling cooking class in Shanghai. The China Cooking Workshop completely delivered! It's in the nice French Concession area and only a few blocks from the subway. Chef Mike taught us some great basic dim sum dishes that I think we could actually prepare back home. His English was excellent and he was fun to talk with while we rolled, folded, and fried our dumplings and spring roll. He called the day before to tailor the menu to our liking too. Much less expensive than other options and a great experience. Go hungry, though, as you make a lot of food to enjoy.

We took a cooking class last year when we visited Shanghai, had to much fun we took two classes this year on on trip this month. Chef Mike was great, explained everything in perfect English. The value was terrific my husband and I even took our son and his girlfriend to our second class. They loved it. You can't beat the good time, the learning experience and the value. Thanks Chef Mike!

My husband and I took the Dim Sum cooking class at the end of March. We had a great time! The spacious classroom is in a bright courtyard in a ritzy district of the city. Students made dumpling dough and filling from scratch and each formed, filled, and fried our own batch followed by a sweet rice and red bean paste dessert. The teachers sent us home with recipes and large take-out containers of food that we couldn't finish (something to keep in mind if you're staying at a hotel without refrigeration). We definitely learned some good tips and will try our recipes back home.
Not only did we learn about the cuisine and city from our teachers, but the class was a good way to meet other travelers and people living in Shanghai. My only regret was not taking a tour of the wet market-- it would be a nice optional add-on to any of the classes.
