Found this market after we had been out to a couple of others further a field via the Metro. The biggest was at the Metro station attached to the Science and Tech.
We found that the range was smaller in this markets but the quality a bit higher.
What surprised us was that at Da XI Pearls with Lisa the prices were comparable.
This market is in Nanjing street 100m from the Marriott and the Sofitel.
Well worth a look if your not got time or feel it hard to get out to the other places.

I have been to the Pearl Market more than once and will go back in the future. I've purchased peals, jade and coral for my wife and daughters. I have also purchased three tailor made suits along with a number of custom made shirts. The prices for all are very good and the selection is amazing. In fact after looking at multiple books of material I just selected suits that were on display.
To get a good deal you have to do some research. If you know a local or expat they can be of great help and more than likely recommend a particular vendor. That is what happened in my case, I just mentioned my friends name and it was like I was family, price and quality was very good.
Pearls can be tricky, as can jade, read up on the item, know what makes them valuable and what to look for. Go in armed with intelligent questions and you will do well. I have not run into any unscrupulous jeweler s or tailors, but the same can't be said for the vendors selling local souvenirs. There is more negotiating with them, don't fall for their first price and watch out for "your my fist customer of the day" so I'll give you a good deal. Again, shop around, see various dealers and you will see that posted prices are almost always the same, it is the negotiated price that will be different. But again, if you do your homework you will do ok.

If you are just staying in the center of Shanghai and want to do some Pearl shopping, this is the place. I have been visiting Linda at Linda's Pearls on the 2nd floor since 2005 and have bought ALOT from her over the years. You will need to bargain on price but you can design your own necklace or buy something that she has on display.

If you have the time for a 30 min tax ride you can go to HongQiao Pearl Market as the prices will be a bit cheaper there.

Beacuse I trust Linda I tend to buy the nicer pearls from her and then will take a trip to HongQiao to get some "fun" necklaces at a lower price.

I loved shopping at this market (which, confusingly, is in a building named 'Silk City'. If you have limited time to shop for local goods in Shanghai, Pearl City has a good range of silks, cashmere, ceramics, knick knacks and pearls - plenty of stores to choose from and at reasonable prices.

Prices after bartering are reasonable, perhaps not as cheap as in some of the specialist centres, but if you need a one-stop-shopping location, this is it. I especially liked how the stores were not pushy and you could happily browse with no sales patter from the store assistants until you had made your choice. Always barter, even if they say they won't. Margins on knicks knacks are probably lower that on jewelry/clothing so don't expect the same 'last price' margin on all categories.

The 'pearl floor' is amazing - too many jewelry stores to take in! We had good experiences at Ellen's and Abe's where the range was very good and the assistants skilled at selecting and designing pieces to your taste. I paid AUD40 for a pair of genuine large mabe pearl earrings in a crystal setting.

If you like pearls you seriously MUST visit this market! Amazing pearls at stupidly low prices but you must negotiate. They are very accommodating and can make up anything you want on the spot. Pearls are genuine and we went crazy! We paid AUS $5 for plain pearl stud earrings and $15 for a short necklace, single strand bracelet and earrings in a box! We bought about 80 items from this market and would go to Shanghai just to go back there!

The Pearl City market is one of three markets in the subway station adjacent to the science and technology museum in Pudong.

The market is one of three. There's the Pearl market for jewelry, the fashion market for handbags, wallets , she's and other items similar to designer goods and the custom tailoring market.

The fashion market is pushy. I think they have a rule stall holders can't intercept you in the corridors, but necessary you engage n discussion, they see you as a future sale that hasn't been made yet. Although it sounds counterintuitive, it's s good idea to counter their price with an offer at about 20% of their quote, negotiating your way up.

The Pearl market looks more serious. There's attractive jewelry at different price points. We found some nice gifts that were quite reasonable.

The tailoring area is even more serious. My wife found a shop that does custom made women's shoes at about $180 USD. For leather shoes with leather soles, that's not a bad price in world markets. There's a two week turnaround time, so that didn't work for us.

It's not bad, but the Silk Market in Beijing is far better.

This venue is ok...not great and not terrible. Always haggle and remember that all name brands are knockoffs. However, this can be a excellent place to buy souvenirs (I.e. Decorative chopsticks, beautiful dolls, and other beautiful merchandise reflective of Chinese culture). Also, while some proprietors can be pushy, most are fair and courteous. And finally, I have heard stories from other travels of being taken into "back rooms" for select merchandise. If doing this, be sure to not shop alone.

Beautiful pearls in an array of colors. Take elevator to second floor and the shop we visited is directly in front after exiting the elevator.
They can make any length necklace.
Prices are negotiable.
I had a translator with me that helped.

We were looking for a market with lots of variety where we could get an inexpensive fix for shopping. We were told that Nanjing Lu was not really great for shopping nor was the flea market in the Old City near Yu Garden. Pearl City was it. The ground floor has lots of shops selling local trinkets, scarves, Chinese-style clothing. We stocked up on knick knacks for our young sons and found a little Chinese dress for a niece. Upstairs, there is lovely Oriental inspired jewellery (bangles, necklaces, earrings) and pearls. We were hard pressed to find something for the guys - cufflinks were rare - but stocked up on pearl bracelets, necklaces and earrings. There weren't a lot of rings either unless you were looking for something very ornate. The stallholders are polite - no one chasing you down the corridor to come into their store and the atmosphere is way more laid back than some other markets I've been to in Asia. We were given a tip to ask them their best price first, then halve that and work your way back up. They will change clasps, shorten/lengthen necklaces etc for no extra charge. I was hoping for more cashmere stores but really only found one on the ground floor. I picked up a hip-length cardigan for about AUD85.
