Cosy jazz club in lively neighbourhood

Music and venue is great. Well worth a visit. Drinks pricy but you're paying for the music. However, waiters and bartenders could really do with cracking the occasional smile - drag the place down.

Like most of the reviewers, I agree about the drinks. I had two glasses of beer 60 RMB (9.50 USD) each one draft one bottle. Both tasted like dog urine cut with kerosene. My wife had two drinks that were so-so for about 80 RMB each. The band was good, started on time and took short breaks. Smokey inside. Good... More

Friendly atmosphere where you can meet locals and expats. Packed and smoky with little room to dance, but it's possible if you want to start the action.

This jazz club is very cosy with a lot of international people! It resembles a bit of an Irish pub with a stage for gigs. The music is very good but the audience tends to be on the older side, not many people younger than 30 years. The drinks are expensive though. The location is good , just in the... More

Even in the midst of summer it was possible to sit outside and enjoy the evening. Wine was reasonably priced and the platters perfect for a social work evening. One to revisit.

We had a great time at the cotton club. The music was great and the atmosphere was awesome. The musicians played really well and then came round and talked to the crowd. They even invited any musicians in the crowd to come and have a jam with them at the end. The only slight problem was the price of drinks... More

I have been here many times over the years I've been visiting Shanghai. The venue provides some of the best live music I've ever seen anywhere in the world. It's more rock / blues than jazz. Drinks aren't cheap but there is no cover charge. It's a multinational band headed up by Greg from the USA with 4 different sets... More

We were taken to this on a night when different performers and regulars jamming. The tiny, chinese singer was sensational with a massive pair of lungs defying her stature. The regular band were great and a guest guitarist was brilliant.Overall a great night.

If you love blues you'll love the cotton club. Make an effort to go and see Denise sing. She's incredible and you'd be hard pressed to find better soul singers anywhere in the US. The drinks are pricey but the music makes it all well worth while. This is one of my must visit stops everytime I come to Shanghai.... More

Ina nutshell:not the comfy jazz bar you could expect Where to start... - Terrible service and rude personnel - don't go for a cocktail (using cocktail pre-mix for some of them) - while they have a very small and narrow place they use those big clunky seats that make it even harder to navigate. As a result you are just... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
