Neighbourhood: Xintiandi
The refurbishment of a block of old shikumen into a carless entertainment center called Xintiandi, filled with restaurants, shops and bars, turned this area below South Huangpi Road into one of Shanghai’s most fashionable areas. Luxe condos house people who can afford the high-end brands that fill the malls and shops along Madang Road. The pleasant Taipinghu Park provides the area with green space and is also home to Shanghai Fashion Week twice a year. It’s not all glitter and glamour, though, as the rise of Danshui Road has given the Xintiandi area a shot of toned-down character. Small bars and cafes, mostly owned by locals, have people hanging out in a formerly quiet, unassuming part of the neighborhood.

- Best food best hotelHong Kong, China6,044 contributionsPlaces worth visitingAnother attraction I like in Shanghai is that there are many small shops and famous shops here. This complex of buildings is very beautiful, and I recommend you to come and take a walk. On special days such as Christmas, the famous shops here are decorated very beautifully, so you can pay attention and come to check in. There are some small shops here, such as ice cream. The ice cream they sell is very unique. Every time I come to Shanghai, I will go to the small shop to eat ice cream.Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 March 2024
- bcheongShanghai, China51,490 contributionsOld and newI come here almost weekly for errands and this is a top 10 tourist spot in shanghai. Mainly the 200 year old shikumen stone buildings have cultural value, there are shops and restaurants to go to not found in many places elsewhere in shanghai - Aesop, Le labo, shake shack, moleskin etc. There’s also 5 star hotels like Andaz and Langham, and many expensive apartmentsVisited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 March 2024
- Maree RChristchurch, New Zealand1,323 contributionsGreat Place For EatingBusy area which offers plenty of shopping and eating. Loved our time strolling around here, gorgeous buildings. We found a fantastic, if pricey yum cha restaurant to have lunch and then just wandered around a bit more.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 March 2024
- Gaby C77 contributionsMix of old and new buildings and high end shopsWe came here to look around and shop and stayed to lunch. The area is an interesting stroll and there are indoor air conditioned shops if high end shopping is your thing. Steets were busy and full of happy shoppers. Lots of variety and options to eat.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 July 2024

New York Bagels, Pudding Cake Pie, Matcha Ice Cream, Netflix Shuffle, Cinnamon Rolls, Burgers. There are also many shopping malls around Xintiandi, such as Soho Fuxing Plaza, Infinity Aloe Mall, Shanghai Hong Kong Plaza, Central Plaza, and so on!Visited November 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 November 2024
- ИгорьKomsomolsk-on-Amur, Russia32,329 contributionsThe whole block is one big multilingual restaurant.Probably the largest gathering of non-Chinese in Shanghai. Whatever languages you hear, whatever faces you see! People are especially crowded tonight. All the cafes, and there are plenty of them here, are filled to capacity. Basically the whole block is one big multilingual restaurant. Architecture is interesting, but it hasn't been in charge for a long time. And almost everything has been extensively renovated, sometimes without exactly preserving the original. Typical surfaces.Visited November 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 January 2025
- Светлана МKrasnoyarsk, Russia24 contributionsShanghai. Xintiandi. In the heart of the city, life boils over and buzzes, especially at night, especially on weekends, creating and multiplying the already active tourist boil by the locals. Lights, smells, sounds, flashes, lanterns, bright colors, noise, hustle and bustle... Shopaholic and gourmet paradise, masses of boutiques and world cuisines. The block is one huge multifaceted and multi-voice resto shopping with peak concentration of diversity, spectrum and range of everything. No - cars, scooters, bikes! Yes - pedestrians, shopping, entertainment, food, comfort, romanticism, photo zones, narrow streets! Restaurants, cafes, motley shops, art salons, shopping malls are the main tourist paradise. Unfortunately, most of the houses - brick structures in the mixed European-Chinese style - have not been renovated, but demolished and rebuilt. It's a shame the Shanghai atmosphere of the early 20th century has gone with them. Well, not that she's gone... Left, a little...Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 January 2025

Xintiandi, in my opinion, is somewhat a bit of a tourist trap of sorts for tourists and foreigners. That doesn't mean that locals do not like to go there, but rather there are probably cheaper and better but less well known places that the locals would go to. Still, that should not deter the first time visitor to Shanghai from at least making a visit once to the place.
It is easy to get to the place by the Shanghai Metro through Xintiandi Station, and then a short 5 min walk to the area. One can go on both day or night, but it is probably better to go down at night for the bar like atmosphere. During the day, one can consider visiting the Site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party attraction, as it is within Xintiandi itself.
The place itself is not too big actually, probably the whole place can be covered in about an hour or so if doing a fast one, but to enjoy the place better, it is probably good to try and enjoy some drinks or food at one of the bars in the area. It seems that there used to be more bars and outlets in the past compared to now. The place seems to have changed a bit these days. There's even a Shake Shack at Xintiandi itself now, which we went to try out.
On average though, prices are a little higher than normal compared to other places in Shanghai, which is somewhat expected given the amount of tourists here. There used to be a shopping mall next to Xintiandi itself, but it closed down when we went there sadly.

This is a local pride point that is where many expats have set up domicile, high end shopping and food, last year at this time Shake Shack opened and had a line around the neighborhhod, but there are better restaurants in the area...and a Ferrari dealer....and Tesla....and nice parks.

Visited this place on Christmas Eve. It was really jam-packed but good atmosphere though. This is a popular place for younger generation, with western food /restaurant options. I enjoyed the Christmas atmosphere in this area, with the Christmas decorations in the area, and stalls along the MaDang Road.

A nice area to walk about, with some older European architecture in the area of the French Concession. Lots of neat looking cafes and restaurants and a bunch of modern fancy malls.
For historical attractions, I wanted to visit the museum of the Korean provisional government. Unfortunately, it was closed.

Nice area to visit. They are still constructing after 15 years. Many of the hip restaurants have moved out, but you have others like Lady M or Din tai fung moving in. Lots of shops between luxury to streetwear

We visited Xintiandi with a tour group in August 2019. Xintiandi is a picturesque little area with modern shops and restaurants where you can enjoy outside alfresco dining and have a drink. Some of the shops are high-end and clearly marketed to tourists, but it was nice to sit at the Boxing Cat Brewery and enjoy the atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

This area has lots of shopping areas and malls. The nice thing is that there are some nice areas with small areas where there are some nice cafes. There are a few local beer brewary too in this area. A nice place to spend the afternoon walking around and relaxing. It is also quite close to the French Consession area.

As well described elsewhere, Xintiandi is an outdoor mall development which incorporates traditional stone buildings (shikumen) and a modern shopping centre. The developers have successfully attracted shops and bars that are high-priced, by Shanghai standards, but a healthy step cheaper than the ultra-luxe offerings at the Bund. It's typically teeming, full of tourists and Shanghai's newly upper-middle-class. The mall, which is perhaps a bit more fashion-forward than many here, is usually quieter than the outdoor food court and shops. Restaurants in Xintiandi are typically good to better than good, although local chains which have a presence there appear to bump up their prices by 30% or more to meet the higher rents. Concierges, faced with hungry western guests, almost always send them here for their first Shanghai meal. A good place for a half-day's shopping and noshing - longer if you try the cinema, which features English-language films - and with convenient taxi and subway service to take you to your next destination. Hardly a true taste of the city - but perhaps closer to it than the more anonymous malls elsewhere.

This is one entertainment complex you shouldn't miss. They have a wide variety of places to hang out in. From coffee shops to discos to bars with bands. Drinks and food are plentiful. Just watch out for lady-joiners - lots of them milling around, keeping an eye out for foreigners in need of some "love". And mind you, they aren't all asian, some even look european and they dress decently enough.
