The area
Neighbourhood: Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Now a boutique hotel but very welcoming when we popped in to look at the architecture. We sat in the conservatory and enjoyed a cold drink and plate of fruit before walking around the garden. A vista of another era.

A grand old mansion from 1935. Way on the excessive side for modern taste but the gardens are lovely and you can have a meal there in your own private gazebo or inside the house. Plan on spending 20 min unless you plan to eat a meal.

This house has some special reference to a Swede, as Moller was a rich Swede living jhere before the war, owning a shipline, and race horses (a statues in the garden of the best one), and a daughter that he wanted to please with a fantasy house.
Now it is a hotel, supposed to be good, at least must be interesting to live there, in the middle of Shanghai, near Huaihai Road. Restaurant is good, interiour is great, exteriour is fantastic, and there is a cafe in the garden, a sort of green oasis. And with my favourite HongKong style reastaurant on the other side of the street: Fu.

Went there today... completely out of my expectation after reading the review before going
1) extremely small
2) Not very friendly. as one of the review said its welcome to take a look but actually when i went in , the guy who worked there told me " its not for outsider" I told him i searched online and said its welcome outsider to take a look. HE said " oh well, our official website never says it i dont know where you saw that its open for public"
In a nutshell... dont waste time, its just like a boutique hotel

I went there for afternoon tea with my families. We have 10 persons sit around the back door area. There were a lot of customers and repair guys using the back door to go out to the garden area. The worst thing was they forgot to keep the door shut. The noises and the cold air were all around the whole afternoon. The servants wouldn't help us to keep the area quiet for afternoon tea. The restroom was very dirty. I wouldn't go there again. Not recommended.

We had the pleasure of staying at this hotel. It is definitely a unique structure that is well placed in the French Concession area of Shanghai. We found the rooms bright and well appointed. The breakfast buffet was a good blend of western and Asian tastes. The garden area was well taken care of and an oasis in the middle of an urban city. It seems to attract a lot of wedding parties. I would stay here again.

Boy, I wish trip advisor would allow me to grade like a school teacher - there ought to be something between average and very good , mustn't it? The Moller residence is a 1930 building in the style of a country villa ( Landhaus) and built to look older than it is. If it would be located in Stansted or Pinner , one would find it rather poorly proportioned. I appreciated the gardens , the calm water features and the lobby , where a friendly young woman is remarkably tolerant of tourists from all over the globe (like us) taking pictures.

Back to 2005, just arrived in town, I did stay in this hotel.
Very cozy and full of character.
Good for the history lovers, but not good for who is looking for the most modern facilities.
