This is a nice to park to visit. It is very big so so you should plan to spend half a day here. There are big open spaces including a quarry park.
There are also three domes that are very similar to the ones in Singapore gardens by the bay. They have a good collection of tropical flowers as well as cactuses in these domes.

Getting There: The cheapest way to get there is line 9 Dongjing Station (洞泾). Take Exit 4 and cross the road via the Over-bridge. Then take the Bus No. 19 to Chen Shan Botanical Garden. Will cost around 10-15rmb one way including the metro fare. Taxi is also available at the bus stop. Apparently there are two buses with a 19 number. Take the one which has only one Chinese character after 19.
Duration: You could allow for a full day to see everything and to relax while you are there.
Fare: Adults 60 RMB. May be a tad expensive because still no blooming and which means it should be an off-season.
Time if the Visit: Spring, blooming season to be precise. I went on Feb-9 and as of now there are no leaves, flowers or fruits to see. Even the grass is yellow or brown. You can see from the pics what I mean. So here is the trade-off:
- It may not be very crowded as of now because it not the the peak season. You could climb the Cheshan Hill and visit the tunnel of the old Quarry under the hill and see the obervatory.
- During peak it may be pretty crowded but I guess you would get to see the garden in its full glory.
Do:
- Carry ample water as the place is very huge. Although there are restaurants but then you may have to walk or take the paid vehicle (10 RMB per trip).
- There are restaurants at each of the Entrances (3 of these) and at the top of the Hill near the tower but it would be good idea to bring food as the restaurants are crowded by foreigner standards.
Don't: If you are planning to walk DO NOT come in high heeled or shows not fit for walking. The Hill is a 300 ft climb so it would be nice to come in comfortable shoes.
Suggested Trails:
Option 1: Go to the Quarry Garden and Climb the Chenshan Hill. This gives the best Vantage point and you can pick which areas you would like to go. Come down the hill and the climb down the pit though the tunnel. The tunnel end at the Medicinal Plants Garden. This would be a bit strenuous though
Option 2: Walk along the level path and cover all the gardens. If you you are tired you can always hop on the vehicle. You need to pay 10 RMB per trip per person though.

Hired a car and driver from the hotel to undertake a day trip. Had we not gotten started early this would have been our only stop of the day. So much to see - just not possible in one day. Beautiful photo graphical opportunities and just to take the time to sit and breathe and relax.
Will definitely make a return visit when we come back to Shanghai.

This massive garden is 40 mins by metro/train from Shanghai City Centre. From there just take a bus or cab (it will cost approx 25 RMB). There are 9 parks each takes around an hour to see. You can commute between the parks by a bus. The bus ticket costs 10 RMB and has included all 9 parks (as in 9 separate trips so you choose when you want to hop on or off). The entrance to the park itself costs 30 RMB - bargain! I had seen only the conservatory due to limited time. There were 3 different conservatories: desert, endangered species (mostly orchids growing on trees), and exotic. It was marvelous, gigantic and totally worth spending the time and money to get there. I hope to get back one day to see all of them!

While I wouldn't put this on the must visit list for tourists with just a short time in Shanghai, I would recommend it to long stay visitors and expats. Located about 1-1.5 hours (depending on traffic) to the West of Shanghai between Songjiang and Sheshan it would make a very pleasant day trip or could be combined with a stay in the area for a weekend visit.
We visited during a major Chinese holiday and expected the worst. However it's location away from cities, subway and bus lines make it relatively hard to get to without a car, so even on a peak holiday the park was not excessively crowded. It was easy to find space.
And what a park it is! They have done a superb job of the gardens with different themes and layouts well executed throughout the gardens. The highlight it probably the quarry garden and it certainly is a unique experience. Kids will like the children's garden and the maze garden. For a rest we rented a putt-putt power boat and sat down for a bit while we floated.
Bring a picnic and there are plenty of attractive green grass spaces to spread out and enjoy, The park is also big enough that you could go for a lengthy jog without retreading too much ground.
Overall, highly recommended.

This is a really nice park. The botanical gardens are great to walk around in. There are a lot of different themed areas. And there are a couple nice places for children to play at. Worth checking out.

Even when there are a lot of people in the garden you can always find somewhere where there are no visitors. Like most gardens or parks in Shanghai, the flowers and landscape changes depending on the season and time of year. They also have massive greenhouses that have spectacular displays year round.
The cheapest way to get there is line 9 Dongjing Station (洞泾) and then take the Bus No. 19 to Chen Shan Botanical Garden. Will cost around 10-15rmb one way.
Allow for a full day to see everything and to relax while you are there.
Do:
Bring water, found it hard to find in the park.
Bring food, more expensive and limited within the park.
Bring camera and comfortable shoes
If you are local, bring chairs to sit comfortably somewhere with good view and feeling.
Don't
Rush through the park, enjoy the peaceful gardens away from the bustle of the city

This was our third visit to these beautiful and relaxing gardens. Lots of different botanically themed areas, extensive parkland and lakes, a converted quarry and so on, which absorb the crowds well. Locals take their tents and picnics for the day. Quieter areas on the Western and Eastern edges. Basic canteen in the entrance hall, snacks available in the gardens, including delicious ice-cream. At least an hour from the city centre by car, also 15 mins taxi ride to subway line 9, make a day of the area and visit either Sheshan or Tianmashan nearby, the latter Shanghai’s highest point at around 100m above sea-level.

Great spot for a quiet walk through very well kept gardens. They will offer you a bus pass for 10rmb but if you are a good walker it's not necessary. There are many diff areas of the park to visit so if you want to see it all plan for a couple of hours. Happy valley & Mount Tianma & Sheshan are in the same area so you could make a whole day out of it.
