People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.

We started walking Fuzhou Road from Raffles City Mall towards the Bund. However it was drizzling so we didnt make it all the way. This street is very interesting and historical, with old buildings and old bookstores and art gallery. Love it!

I have visited Shanghai many times and walked on Fuzhou Road many times. I walked here again in March 2017. Fuzhou Road is relatively quiet compared to the hustle and bustle of the Nanjing Road pedestrian shopping street. There are many stores here. However, I go here for the bookstores. There are two that I like. The Shanghai Foreign Language Bookstore and Shanghai Book City. There are also some good restaurants on this street. I definitely think it is worth a slow walk from Henan Road to People's Square.

Obviously, the red, uber Chinese palatial-looking architecture covered in tiles looks interesting. However, many of them were probably modern recreation of the ancient designs, for tourism purposes. On the OTHER end of Fuzhou Road, not the cultural street, is where the locals really do love to visit. Follow the local elderly to know where to go!
On this other end of Fuzhou Road, is where the foodies REALLY have to go. It's a historical street of old restaurants. We've been there at least a few times during our four days in the city central and here are the restaurants we recommend:
1. Wang Bao He 王宝和 opened since 1744!
Famous for their hairy crabs.
2. Lao Ban Zhai 老半斋 opened since 1905!
Famous for their "cold cut" yao rou 肴肉, really tasty noodles, dumplings and numerous types of snacks.
3. Xing Hua Lou 杏花楼 opened since 1851!
Famous for their mooncakes, sweet snacks (their most famous yet seasonal qing tuan青团), their preserved cooked duck.
4. Shen Da Cheng 沈大成 opened since 1875!
Famous for snacks and desserts.
5. Lao Zheng Xing 老正兴 opened since 1862!
Known for being one of the cheapest Michelin star restaurants in the world.
Other than cultural and food, this street is also really famous for their old bookstores, also frequented by many older bookworms. Note: despite some stationary stores looking really humble and proper in this area where many locals frequet, they still overcharge tourists for memorabilia. Know the right prices before purchasing. If not, visit the OUTTER stores near Yu Yuan Garden's bazaar. They charge much lower for memorabilia.

This street has a lot of shops selling Chinese Ciltural Products, like paintings, caligrapghy, equipments, etc. etc.
The City of Books is also most famous in Shanghai at this street. Whoever interested on Chinese Books could come here.
After you finished here, your next stop could be Nanjing Road.

Quite an interesting street to walk at night when it's all lit up nicely. There are many stores along the street catering mostly to the tourist market; nothing terribly authentic or original however.

Full of souvenirs shops, great place to spend an afternoon. But do remember to bargain, or else you will get ripped off. And remember to check at least 10 shops for the item you want, you might get it cheaper. (don't always go for the first, its not always the best) the best thing is that the yuan garden is just near by, more shops and a garden but note there is an admission to enter the garden.

Lovely old world Shanghai architecture. Beautiful buildings with narrow lanes and a courtyard pond area.
Big crowds in the afternoon so come early and beat the throngs of tourists.
It’s generally a shopping area with a number of Chinese bakery shops, candy / treat shops and an array of tourist trinket and souvenir shops.
We walked from here to the bund. Allow several hrs if you want to visit every shop.
It’s a small area so if you are in a rush an hour will be fine.

This is definitely a place to find very unique things. Toys, books, you name it and they might have it. Excellent place for street food if you are into it.

Great place to browse and buy - very atmospheric. Lots of tourists but the majority were Chinese. Lots of very small shops selling all sorts of interesting stuff. Bargain hard - a friend living in Shanghai suggested starting at 25% of their opening price.
