A lovely old town, really! The part where there are rows of shops selling clothes and pajamas and shoes is the noisy part; it was like they were competiting among each other with their loud speakers!!! Lotsssss of shops there. The old town is lovely. Crowded. Lots to see and eat. Twin pagodas were under construction when we were there. Do try their Xiao Long Bau as Nanxiang is the birthplace for these soup dumplings. Line 11 to Nanxiang station will take you there. Walk along Zhongjia Road from metro alllll the way (about 2 blocks) until you see Guyiyuan Road. Turn right and immediately turn left into Heping Street. There’s a canal by Heping Street. Walk through Heping Street, right to the end and cross the road into Nanxiang Old Street. An interesting walk indeed.

1. The name. As always, there is confusion in translating a name from Chinese into English. There are two exactly the same listings on Tripadvisor: Nanxiang Ancient Town and Nanxiang Old Street. The exact name is Nanxiang Ancient Town, Jiading District, Shanghai 201802, China. As Tripadvisor is reluctant to merge them, I will list my review in both!
2. How to come here. Take metro line 11 to Nanxiang Station. Take exit 2, walk downstairs to the right, first street to the left. This is Zhongjia Road which after the crossing becomes Minzhu Road. Always straight on for about 15 minutes, at the crossing with Guyiyuan road you see at your right across the street the entrance to Nanxiang Ancient Town, the Heping Road. Walk straight on for another 10 minutes.
3. Review. Nanxiang Ancient Town is very picturesque and peaceful, no Western tourists (except us) and delicious food available. Both the Yunxiang Temple and the Tan Garden are worth a visit, see the separate reviews.

I have decided to visit this hidden gem after read good reviews from tripadvisors. It was definitely a off beaten path with lesser crowd during week day.
It was quite a short walk from Line 11 - Nan Xiang, probably about 15 mins.
This is fully recommended to visit if you're around Shanghai. Though it may not be as big as Zhou Zhuang or Wu Zhen, this is still a pretty and scenic town. Xiao Long Bao was not too bad but a bit pricey. The best thing is you dont need to pay entrance fee.
I really love taking a stroll along this old street. Do stop by at the bridge where you can have a wonderful view of the water town. I can stop admiring the beautiful view of the ancient town when I was there!
Love it :)

Take Line 11 to NanXiang and walk along Minzhu Street to the market place right hand side. Cross a little footbridge and go straight into that restaurant. The Xialongbau - soup filled dumplins - are excellent. The old town has also some nice villa with garden and a museum and a temple to visit. A ticket for RMB20 gives you access to all 3. We went there on a lazy afternoon during Golden Week expecting large crowds. But it was great. No tour buses. Everyone can come and go by Metro. Perfect for individual travellers.

Exploring the Nanxiang is very interesting. There are many very narrow streets, and so many small shops both sides of those narrow streets. Shoe shops, clothing's, food, and so on.
I heard that "Xiaolongbao", that is one of the dim sum, was originated from NanXiang. Because of that you can see several restaurant serve "Xiaolongbao".
Also the view at the center of the small bridge across the small river is very nostalgic.
There is Chinese garden and also a temple in that area.
It is very close to center of Shanghai, it takes about 30 min. by subway form People's Square station. Get off at "Naxiang" station on #11 subway. It was 5 Yuen from People's Square (in June 2012).

To give you a different perspective on Shanghai, you should visit one of the old towns around Shanghai. This is an easy one to get to via metro line 11. A good way to see some more authentic Shanghai life.

This site is not mentioned in the guidebook, and our tour guide didn't know about it. It was Tripadvisor that alerted us to it! A train ride and a 10 minute walk lead you to a little bit of history in the modern suburbs. The old houses have been restored and there are plenty of little shops, canals, and a temple. The highlight for us was the Tan Garden - I think it is actually nicer than the one in downtown Shanghai. Well worth the trip.

Pretty cool place to walk around and explore. We stumbled into a fairly large indoor flea market and that was fun. Read that xiaolongbao originated here and that's interesting.
If come by metro line 11 it's easy to leave out station exit 2 and get a taxi. Walking is around 20-min.

Not a place to spend too long getting to but if you are close it is worth a couple of hours. It is only 15 minutes walk from the line 11 metro station but not well signposted.
Many of the "old" building have been restored so much nothing old remains and many other buildings are new made to look old, having said that Yan's garden ( tickets needed ) is pleasant enough despite the over restoration and all the fittings inside the building being new. Try to go on a quiet weekday morning when it is quiet.

If you have half a day to spare, make this THE stop. I have been to a few ancient street in Shanghai and in other city, and this by far feels the most authentic of them all. The narrow street, stone flooring, overhanging banner, smell of food, all adds up to my imagination of old China.
Oh. Don't forget to try the Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao - little steamed buns with meat stuffings. There are a few stalls and even a restaurant selling them. Not sure which one is the most authentic or maybe they all are.

Which one will you recommend to visit, between Nanxiang old street and Qibao old street?
I want to go to the place where there are local street food stalls, souvenirs, and interesting attractions.
Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Nanxiang does not really have food stalls. Has trendy coffee shops also chinese food but not stalls. Both are interesting and have souvenirs but different. Nanxiang mix of old and new. Have not been to qibao but in general villages are more authentic with lots of food stalls. You should do both.

How long does it take in total to go by metro and bus from Tomorrow Square area in Shanghai? Hard to do as foreigners? We are booking a private tour by car and have asked for Nanxiang to be in the itinerary but it would take 40 - 60 minutes. A nice scenic drive?
Written 3 March 2015
I went there by Metro so hard to say about the drive. I don't speak any Mandarin but it was still a lovely day so I wouldn't be worried.
