Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I always love areas like this with street art, good coffee and artist explaining their own work and I had a great experience visiting M50 as well. I ended up at an exposition where the artist explained her philosophical perspective on the universe, which led to an interesting cross-cultural discussion, also fed by my own scientific point of view. One of the highlights of my visit!
Why only 3 stars then? Well, because this place is definitely aimed at the 1% / happy few of the Shanghai population. Prices are high and it doesn't connect with normal Chinese folks. In China you can become rich as an artist (because the wealthy will pay whatever) and this place very much screams in your face that this is the ambition of many artists. It has an underground feel to it, but in fact it's just big money that drives this...
So: cool liberal spot, but not really my cup of tea.

This a great place to wonder round and let out your creative side. Nice for an afternoon wonder round when the sun is out. A delightful maze of creatives. Anything you can imagine, high end art, ceramic, street art. Also a few nice places to get a snack. Recon you can do it in an afternoon but try to do it while the suns shinning!

LOVE IT!!!! Very interesting art district. There are galleries of art, paintings, haute couture, it is just an awesome place to spend a day. Great place to learn about new artists in China.

I did finally venture here on a Sunday by taxi (the galleries are closed on Mondays). It is a warren of really interesting small galleries, some of which are quite good. The place was empty when I got there around 11 but was active when I left. One neat place is a free art school. The amateurs painting there were decent. The collection is eclectic, ranging from pictures to sculptures, jewelry, home decor and videos.
If you are not too interested in art, this place can be avoided, but if you have time, it is worth a visit. There isn't much by way of food around there and there is no metro within walking distance. I waited a few minutes and was able to get a taxi back.

Quite hard to get to and quite hard to get back from, the M50 Creative Park really is not worth the effort. Hearing of a vibrant contemporary art scene in Shanghai rivalling that which is reported of Beijing (although even less in evidence there), we made the trek out. There were few studios open and those few (with one exception) were displaying tourist bait. Mostly, we encountered closed doors. The food options there are extremely limited and appear to be staffed by students on work experience. Rubbish. There are excellent galleries and museums downtown (unlike Beijing, which has few, if any), such as the Rockbund, to which you should devote your attention.

Take line 13 to Jiangning Road. Walk out exit 2 and turn right. Do not walk up the bridge- stay to the right at ground level. In less than 100 meters you will T at West Suzhou Road. Turn left and enjoy the quiet lovely shady walk north. You will basically walk straight to the park (look for the smokestack). Cross the street and enter the complex through a not-well-marked guarded car gate. Very close to this entrance is Island 6 digital artists collective, one of my favorite little galleries in Shanghai.
If you are looking for a quiet and enjoyable place to pass an afternoon, this is a great place to be. Wander in and out of galleries and studios and don't expect much direction.
Joy Collection is a very pleasant place for coffee and good food (I love the black mushroom truffle soup).

Even as you walk over the bridge and see the street art you'll be taken in. Once you actually get to M50 you'll find all sorts of gems, really good contemporary art, beautiful little galleries and a great mix. And all of that for free!
Make sure to go between 1-5 though as some galleries open late and others close early, I was there at 5 sharp and had to miss some but went back the day after, well worth it!

i rollerbladed to the M50 art galleries expecting to see a lot of chinese contemporary art...which i did...i did not expect to purchase a painting for my art collection back home in LA...but i did...most of the galleries in this urban ghetto of art are somewhat expensive....with the average cost of a quality oil painting being in the $5000 to $10,000 range...but just as i was about to roll back to my hotel, i spotted a "hole in the wall" gallery in which you had to step down into a subterranean cave of concrete where a heavily tattooed chinese man had his studio of paintings and sculptures...on the wall was a painting of ghandi...depicted as a jester in a glass box...it immediately appealed to me...i asked the long haired artist how much he wanted for this oil painting which was dated 2014...he replied: 1500 RMB....which was the equivalent of just over $200....i had no idea how i would get this framed painting on the plane and back to calfornia but i liked it so much that i countered with a low ball offer of 700 RMB which was about $100 and much to my surprise, he accepted my offer....put bubble wrap over the oil painting...and just before i rollerbladed the 5 km back to my hotel...carrying the painting in the curb lane with all the motorcycles and bicycles, i ran into a person i had seen in one of the very expensive art galleries and since we were both surprised that i had actually purchased a painting, she snapped the photo that you see here....but ultimately before i boarded the plane back to LA, i had to dismantle the painting from its frame and roll it up into my suitcase...and then once back in LA, i had the painting stretched and fitted back onto a wooden frame....but since i do not travel with a smartphone or a camera, this photo taken at the M50 galleries in shanghai is a sweet reminder of the origins of the painting which now hangs on my bedroom wall above a painting of janis joplin and next to a lithograph of muhammad ali....

Visited M50 and enjoyed the atmosphere and stopping though various studios. It was a bit challenging knowing where to navigate, but that turned out to be part of the fun. Similar to Beijing’s 798 art area.

Is the park open during 2020 Chinese new year? (26th of Jan to be exact)
Written 1 January 2020
I doubt if it's open. I tried to visit during CNY 3 years ago and it was closed. I visited last weekend and already quite a few galleries were shut for the holiday

As others have said, yes. It's about 10-15 minutes from the Central Train Station. It's a nice walk over the Suzhou river.

Do you have to purchase a ticket to get in?
Written 24 October 2015
Agreed, no ticket needed. But you have to get there, and it's a bit out of the way, so there's a time investment, even if there's no fee.
